Revisited the 3 Golden Earring Records that I own.. Moontan, Switch, To The Hilt.. for the first in 30 some odd years, after watching this. Man it doesn’t get much better than Side 1 of Moontan.. cranked! Cesar Zuiderwijk was/is such a great drummer. So underrated.

Yes, the European version that we have is my top album of all time. There are a few different versions with different song lists of this album though, with songs added & removed. Pity we are not all hearing & judging the same great album. It even has a different album cover in some countries.

Hi Pete, nice one...still got some warm memories doing backingvocals (streetchoirs) in Soundpush Studio 2, for the Golden Earring album 'Cut' on their two hitsingle tracks: 'Twilight Zone' and 'The Devil Made Me Do It'. Together with Steve Clisby and Omar Dupree from soulband: American Gypsy (the three of us did the job). Producer Shell Schellekens already produced two hit albums for my rockband: Urban Heroes. He decided the songs needed other vocal-colours in the (answering) choirs, so he called us. Golden Earring thanking American Gypsy and Evert Nieuwstede @ the 'Cut' LP/CD Info. Keep up the works! FIX THE WORLD...

Nicely done Pete! Golden Earring are certainly one of the most underrated rock bands of all time! As Goldmine Magazine put it, "Golden Earring are rock 'n roll's best kept secret!" On their debut album in 1965, they wrote all but one song. Not even the Beatles or Stones can claim that! With the sole exception of "Eight Miles High" in 1969, it wasn't until 1995's "Love Sweat" before they recorded another cover tune...everything else was original! And what you'll discover as you trace the band throughout its recording career is they rarely stuck with the same formula, nor did they ever "sell out" and adjust their sound to accommodate the record industry. They always did "their thing". It might be for this reason why they never achieved the world-wide success they deserved, but it also may have led to their downfall.
Your top 10 Golden Earring studio picks are not far from mine. We definitely agree on the #1 album "The Wall Of Dolls" which by the way was released in 1970 (not 1971). This masterpiece is my "dessert island" album! Pete, I agree with you that 1969-1976 was their peak period. However, they have also released same damn good material in the 90's and 00's. If you have not heard them yet, I highly recommend the following studio releases: Bloody Buccaneers (1991), Face It (1994), Paradise in Distress (1999), Millbrook U.S.A. (2003), and Tits 'n Ass (2012).
If you are interested in the band's history, here is a link to an in-depth article I wrote on the band:

I remember in the 70’s that the Golden Hearing drummer had a “party piece” when he used to leap over his drum kit at the end of Radar Love . It was very impressive at the time !
A school mate of mine at the time only had the Moontan vinyl album and he fancied himself as a bassist , practicing at home the classic bass line from Radar Love .
Oh how we laughed at school when he told us he had been practicing the above in his bedroom and then leapt off this bed at the end of the track ..... only to fall on top of his bass guitar breaking it .
I’ve not forgotten that story .... it was very funny at the time .

One of my top ten bands ever and I was born '63. I love everything up till about '76 and the "To The Hilt" album. I struggled with their output from then, and when "Cut" came along I suddenly got interested again. After that I continued to keep an eye on them but never really appreciated the later albums as much. Their more psych and prog tendencies did it for me.

Like some others in the comments, I went from none Golden Earring in my collection, to the complete albums and complete live albums box sets in one online purchase. I've been working through their albums chronologically (as I love to do with bands), and I'm realizing just how criminally underrated this band is. Currently on To The Hilt, I can't wait to get through them all. I'll attempt a ranking once I get through them.

I can’t argue with any of the selections on this list, though “Moontan” is the album I know best and would probably put it at the top.
I bought the boxed set of complete studio albums a few years ago, and it’s absolutely killer - 26 albums, plus three discs of non-album tracks. They also have several great live albums, plus a standard boxed set that’s worth checking out. It’s amazing to hear their progression from jangle-pop to prog to hard rock with some side trips to jazz, folk and power pop along the way.
This band is one year older than the Stones and deservers much, much more recognition. If ever there was a band that I love but that I need to know better, this is it.

So glad you did a Golden Earring segment, Pete. Weird because I was just ranking my Golden Earring collection a couple of days ago just for fun (a la "Sea of Tranquility)!
I think it's sad how underrated G.E. are given the length of their career. My top albums are:
    1. Switch (really dig the phasing George uses throughout much of this album)
    2. N.E.W.S. - this wasn't on your list, but I think this is one of the best produced "pop" / hard rock albums ever; right up there with "Rumors" by Fleetwood Mac. Definitely not super heavy but George Kooymans' guitar tones are brilliant as is the songwriting.
    3. Moontan
    4. Contraband
    5. Prisoner of the Night
    6. Seven Tears
    7. Wall of Dolls
    8. Together
    9. Tits 'n' Ass
    10. Millbrook U.S.A.
    Thank Pete!

Very nice. As a dutchman surely I knew Golden Earring from then and from now. My favorite album is To the Hilt. It is also their slightly more difficult album, but I like it. Followed very close by Moontan (although my top two could flip places anytime). I also liked Switch (actually my first GE album). And always liked She Flies on Strange Wings (maybe my favorite GE track, however Radar Love, The Vanilla Queen, Are you Receiving me? and e.g. Facedancer, Latin Lightning, or Kill Me are also killer. There was a great compilation album which I've never seen on CD, titled Hearing Earring this is where I heard some of the best songs from 2 earlier albums, I bought this near release date (1973) & went on to seek out the albums which these songs came from & those were Together & SevenTears both great albums (my favourite is 'To The Hilt').The Hearing Earring vinyl release I have has a neat addition to the cover, braille. as I don't read braille I don't know what it says, I'm guessing the album title & tracks, perhaps somebody here can tell me if they have a copy & can read braille.
Great uploads Pete. How about ranking the releases of The Groundhogs the great English blues rock band who supported John Lee Hooker as his band on his 60s UK tour, their music is still being kept alive by the original drummer (from 1965) Ken Pustelnik & great band. (performances on my channel, shaky visuals at times sound good on headphones depending upon the venue)

Great to see this review of your favorite Golden Earring albums - so much awesome music and very underrated! I think you covered all of their 70s albums except "Grab It For a Second", which got some airplay in the U.S. and they appeared on "Midnight Special". Another strong album is "N.E.W.S". - "When The Lady Smiles" is one of my all-time favorite videos (try to find the uncensored version!) I just watched their 2022 cd/dvd release of what was sadly their final concert in Ahoy in 2019, called "You Know We Love You." At that show they played quite a few songs from their excellent "Face It" album. Other later gems worth checking out are "Bloody Buccaneers" and "Paradise In Distress." Golden Earring released an essential 4cd box set called "The Devil Made Us Do It" that rounded up lots of singles tracks not on the regular albums, including many of their 60s gems. I always loved the song "I Need Love" from the U.S. "Mad Love" album and it's on this box set. As for the side-long "Eight Miles High", I'm guessing they were influenced by Vanilla Fudge and Iron Butterfly at that time, as well as the Byrds' own extended version. Finally, my top 5 - 1. "Moontan" (especially the recent deluxe version combining all the songs) 2. "Switch" 3. "Together" 4. "Cut" 5. "No Promises No Debts." Thanks, Pete!

Nice Video. Saw their last Concert in Rotterdam 2019. I missed the last 30 years, albums with melodic rock. And their first unplugged album has jewels.... Bass player was asked by Hendrix play with him, but he didn't leave golden earring. Same with drummer and The Who. Underrated band.

I own all of these and have to say that I don't dislike any of them. Some are better than others, of course, but I wouldn't turn any of them off. I also should say that I like all phases of their carreer.
    25) Grab It for a Second (kinda faceless)
    24) Love Sweat (Covers album)
    23) Paradise in Distress (this has about four too many songs on it)
    22) Face It
    21) Bloody Buccaneers
    20) Eight Miles High (no one can top the Byrds' version)
    19) Miracle Mirror
    18) No Promises...No Debts
    17) Millbrook U.S.A.
    16) On the Double
    15) Golden Earring
    14) Together
    13) Switch
    12) Keeper of the Flame
    11) Tits 'n Ass (their most recent, and pretty damn good)
    10) Just Ear-rings
    9) Winter-Harvest
    8) Contraband aka Mad Love
    7) Prisoner of the Night aka Long Blond Animal
    6) The Hole
    5) Cut
    4) Seven Tears
    3) N.E.W.S.
    2) To the Hilt (Nomad is an amazing song)
    1) Moontan (not a bad note on this album)
On a final note I need to throw some love out for the 1977 Live album. It would place just below Cut for me. It's great. Thanks, Pete!

They have two box-sets released a couple of years ago. One containing almost all of their studio albums/tracks and one for their live output.
Special note from me: Eelco Gelling is a true master of the guitar and can be heard on two studio albums but also one very important their first live album released in 1977. He is famously known for his work for Cuby + Blizzards.

I can't really argue with that top 10. I would put Bloody Buccaneers in my top 10 (Going to the run alone makes my top 5 Golden Earring songs) and I was surprised that Kill Me Ce Soir (on Switch) didn't get a mention.
For those marking the band's longevity: while they started in 1961 there are only two founding members still in the band. Lead singer Barry Hay joined in 1967 and Drummer Cesar Zuiderwijk in 1970. Still, having the same core for only 50 years is not that bad.

great to see these albums ranked, pretty cool, not to many bands from the Netherlands came that far. Minor correction: the self titled album is from 1970, not '71. Some Dutch prog suggestions for you to listen to:
Alquin: Marks (1972) and Mountain Queen (1973),
Supersister: Present from Nancy (1970), To the Highest Bidder (1971), Pudding en Gisteren (1972),
Cheers from the Netherlands and keep up the good work!

Fan for over four decades. Millbrook U.S.A. (2003) has some of the absolute best songs that they ever wrote and recorded. I've got around 30 vinyl albums and a half of a dozen or so CDs of their later stuff. That's the only album that I would put ahead of Wall of Dolls. Look up a live version of a song called, "Albino Moon". It's great! Your Moontan CD has the European songlist. Big Tree, Blue Sea, on WOD was re-recorded for the American version of Moontan. Just Like Vince Taylor ended up as side B on the American 45. Great band. Flower In The Mud was a good tune, from their last album Tits n Ass. Always great to see a fan!

You should listen to their 1994 album Face It. Great album. At their last concert they still played 4 tracks from that album. It was a follow-up to their unplugged album The naked truth. That album was hugely succesful in the Netherlands so Face It had acoustic songs on it and some great rockers as welk.

My favorite album is Eight Miles High, one of my first records ever. I played it loud in my bedroom and all of a sudden my father entered and broke the record on his knees. He was furious because I disturbed his nap on his break from the store. At a concert here in Zwolle (buitensoos venue) I attended a show where they played the song live and was amazed about Rinus smashing the bass against his London City stack. What a performance, I will never forget it.

So happy you did this band. Moontan , Switch , To the Hilt all came out during my adolescent years. Great album covers and among my favorite albums. There song writing at this time was dead on, near perfect. Amazing guitar player. TH-cam has a vidio of them at Winterland in 71. Watch it , George just smokes on a fretboard. You can down load the music for the two nights they played there on WolfgangsVault.com. If you did a show on the one album we all think is overlooked by music lovers Moontan would be my choice. The four members that are in the band now hold the record for longest enduring members in a band, since 1970.

I agree with the majority of inclusions here, but the omission of 1978's Grab it for a Second, looms large and I find Prisoner of the Night from 1980, a much stronger album than Cut.
Grab it is a consistently solid album and Leather alone, should get it this on the list. Just too many well crafted tunes to not be included (Against the Grain, Tempting, Grab it for a Second).
Relegate 8 Miles and Cut to the honorable mentions and add Grab it and Prisoner to round out a truly entertaining top 10. Prime stuff!

I been saying this same thing for a while now. My favorite of theirs is Switch. Had many a discussion with classic rock DJ's from all over the country about playing the same songs over and over. GE was my prime example. Twilight zone and Radar Love are the only two you hear them play. Anyhow, I dig these guys a lot.

Just discovered their self-titled album and it is a rocker! Also known as wall of dolls , and I see it is your favorite also! Trying to find a vinyl copy at a decent price. I purchased a CD box set that has all of their Studio releases and when I find something I really like I try to find a good vinyl copy. Did not play CDs for about four years as vinyl took my world over but I am rediscovering the joy of CDs and my 6 disc Carousel player. I listen to and enjoy music from many different sources but vinyl is usually superb in sound quality and provides a totally different and unique listening experience. Much more labor-intensive but that's part of the fun. Just like much less labor-intensive is part of the fun with CDs!

Mountain, Switch, To The Hilt, and Contraband are the ultimate albums from G.E. when the keyboard player from Supersister definitely gave the band more consistency. They had hit and miss like every other album in their discography and had a few good tracks on them.
