The moment I first heard Hair of the Dog album in 1975 I was hooked. That is still one of the best and influential hard/heavy rock albums of the 70's. Saw Nazareth headline the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago march of '79 on the No Mean City tour. Great band!

Malice In Wonderland does grow on one as one matures. There's a bit of a trick with Malice, it's the only album that Manny Charlton offered another guitarist to contribute as a member of Nazareth at a fairly tender age. Who it was is pretty surprising, the unemployed guitarist from the band The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Zal Clemson. Look it up if you like, Zals name's is right on the album cover with the rest of Nazareth.

I ‘ve been waiting for this feature, Pete.
Nazareth have such a vast back catalogue of albums that I didn’t know which ones were best to check out. I own the live Snaz album which I really like (definitely in my 10 favourite live albums). I love how they include plenty of covers and put their own unique stamp on them.
This is one of the great things about your videos - not only can we talk about our favourite bands and albums, we can learn about others we might have missed out on. Thanks.

  • @CathyLahn
    @CathyLahn 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

Pretty much agree all the way through to #1.
Nothing tops "Hair Of The Dog" That album is Nazareth's Back In Black, Ziggy Stardust, Zoso, Rumours, Moving Pictures, etc. And I'm so with you about MISS MISERY. Killer song! I was soooooo into that one as a ROCK loving kid in the mid 70s!
But then, you've still got other stone classics like Changin' Times, Beggars Day, Whiskey Drinkin' Woman and Please Don't Judas Me to go. Sublime album with brilliant production.
And yeah, "Expect No Mercy" at #2 is accurate as well. The title track may be their greatest song ever, while the rest of that record is consistent and compliments it well.
Razamanaz, Loud & Proud, PTG, Close Enough, No Mean City, etc. following, dead on.
    A stellar ranking indeed.
I also agree that everything after "Malice in Wonderland" is a hit and miss affair, with "Cinema" being the best of the lot.
*One thing about 1998's "Boogaloo". The lead off single (that you did not mention) is quite good, and to me, a bit of a throwback to the 1970s.
    Marc

No Mean City will always be very special to me, since it was the first Nazareth album I came into contact with, and I'm 99% sure it was the awesome album cover that made me buy it. A decision I certainly don't regret. I do think Hair of the Dog is their best album though. In fact, I think it's one of the greatest classic hard rock albums ever released. Totally amazing stuff.
I've always struggled with Nazareth's softer pop-oriented and more commercial side (I don't mean the ballads, they're usually great) but when they showed that they meant serious business, with heavy gritty guitars, pounding drums and Dan's GLORIOUS voice soaring above it all, they were practically untouchable. I also like The Fool Circle a lot, even though it lacks a lot of raw power. It does have very good songs.

Nazareth are one of the early 70s hard rock pioneers often overlooked and sometimes almost forgotten about and not included with the likes of Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Sabbath and Heep. Most of my favourites come from that 70z period, featuring fir me their best line up of McCafferty, Agnew, Charlton and Sweet (with Cleminson added for No Mean City). Rather partial to Move Me from the latter period.

Nazareth's NO MEAN CITY was the reason I became to have rock'n'roll as a hobby, in 1979, I was 13 y.o. I had already at that time some pleasure by listening, but until that moment no curiosity about names of bands and artists - the exception was The Beatles.
My list has just 14 albums; the others mean nothing to me.

I was waiting for Nazareth, thanks Pete. Great band with fantastic voice of Dan Mccafferty.
    1. Razamanaz- My favovrite. Hardcore album with sharp riffs heavy bass and drums with fiery dirty vocal. Electrifying, devilish, strong album. Absolutely love.
2.Hair of the Dog- Perfection is not enough. Furious, masterpiece, charm, epic. One of the best rock albums ever.
3.Loud'N'Proud- Energetic rockers. Band can be proud of it and they are really loud.
4.Rampant- For me over time this album is getting better and better. Strong songs and excellent ballads like Sunshine or hypnotic Loved and Lost. Great vibe.
5.Expect No Mercy- Energy explodes. Venomous and sharp. Even pop rock Shot me Down or country rock Place in your Heart doesn't bother. Very good album.
6.No Mean City- Simple and catchy rock and roll with a very moving ballad Star. A very decent album
7.Close Enough For R'n'R- First song is amazing, what a suite. Album has something cool and i listen to it very often. Does not age at all.
8.2XS- Best 80's band album. There are great and weaker moments. I have great mood with this album. The melody is addictive
9.Play'n'The Game- Sharp and stylish, great sounding and groove.
10.Nazareth Debut-Heavy piece solid hard rock. Some good songs and some weak ones. The band was forming n the right direction
    11.The Newz- Good rock energy
    12. Big Dogz- albums close to 70's
13.Boogaloo- I fell passion on this album. It's fresh drive surprisingly good.
14.No Jive-I am surprised Pete that this album is at the end of your list. I think it's very strong and catchy. Worth remembering, good guitars. Very memorable song: Tell Me That You Love Me, Every Time IT Rains, hard Cry Wolf or heavy Lap of Luxury. I like this album.
15.Snakes'n'Ladders- Great opening. Decent album we will find here traces of old Nazareth.
16.Exercises-Some interesting moments, lack of consistency
17.The Fool Circle- Flat drums sound. Let Me be your leader great song. The rest of the album is so-so.
    You can listę.
18.Sound Elixir-Worth attention Whippin Boy,Local Still, Milk and Honey and best Where are You now
19.Malice inWonderland- Worth attention fantastic Heart's Grown Cold, Holiday and Turning a new leaf.
20.Move Me-Wotrh attention Steamroller. Very boring album
21.Cinema- Veterans song, hit the fan and Other side of You.
22.The Catch- Pop album. I don't like it. Maybe Love of Freedom it's good. Mccafferty saves the album
Rock and Roll Telephone It's somewhere in the middle I listened a little but was good.
Tattoed on my brain I listened once and enough. Without Dan, it's not Nazareth.
Pete i'm waiting on Allman's. Thank You.

One of the greatest bands of the greatest decade of rock. Malice was a cliff dive for them, although they still had many good songs and a few good albums over the following decades. After No Mean City, I was REALLY looking forward to the next album. I was so enraged by how terrible Malice was that I opened a window, grabbed the album off my turntable, and flung it outside, smashing it into the trunk of a tree. To this day, I can still remember how satisfying that felt.

Yeah cant argue with your list (yet again) and agree with your suggestions for those who are newbies to Nazareth. I do have them all - didnt get them when first out but collected when they put them all out back in the late 90's. My favourite Nazareth moment is when teh opened their BBC In cocnert set with Telgram back in 1978 (I think or could have been 80) and as such Close enough for rock n roll is a favourite - I love Manny Charltons playing on that one,the way they sampled in a snippet of my flight tonight and the weaving in of so you want to be a rock n roll star into it - great stuff .

Wow, this is a tough band to rank because they have so many albums. Strangely, in honor (and somewhat, in expectation) of your Ranking the albums segments, I ranked my Nazareth albums a week or so before you did this!
I own most but not ALL the Naz albums. Those that I don't have, I've listened to extensively via TH-cam. Here are my rankings...

    9. Close Enough for Rock and Roll
    10. Play 'N' the Game
    11. No Jive (I notice, Pete, you had this last on your list...I think this is heavier and much superior to the rest of their 1981-1990 material)
    12. Big Dogz
    13. 2xS
    14. Sound Elixir
    15. Rock 'n' Roll Telephone
    16. Cinema
    17. Exercises
    18. Fool Circle
    19. The News
    20. Snakes and Ladders
    21. The Catch
    22. Boogaloo
    23. Move Me
    24. Tattooed On My Brain (I honestly haven't listed much to this one but I know from past experience that the singer, Carl Sentance, has a great voice)

One thing that I really liked about Nazareth was their totally uniqueness .... no two album sounded the same.
Hands down - my top two favorite albums are .....
    #2. Hair Of The Dog
    #1. The Fool Circle
#4. Razamanaz and #3. Close Enough For Rock 'N' Roll are likely very close (near tie breakers in position).
The others - an album may have a good song or two, but like Pete nailed it with most of their albums (they needed something extremely hard and heavy) lack anything to make it a good album overall.

One of the first heavy rock bands that I started listening to in the 70s with "Razamanaz", "Loud and Proud", "Alice in Wonderland", "Hair of the dog", albums that I have on vinyl in perfect condition with others on CD and also videos with concerts. Excellent Scottish heavy sound band with the torn voice of Dan McCafferty that made him very special in the group sadly passed away on November 8, peace in his grave and left us a great legacy with this great Scottish band

Sorry to be so late on this. Have been on a real Nazareth kick lately. I think your placement of the rankings was excellent. Because of so many Naz releases I think any fan could twist them around in rank a little bit, but you nailed it. One thing through the years, because they were such a unique band, I always wanted to hear anything new from them. Always intriguing. And as I look back in retrospect I try and also realize the trends that were taking place at the time musically. They tried on many occasion to capture the current sound. And it was hit and miss as you eluded to. Love the channel. Thank you.

However, I LOVE some of their later releases, with "2XS" (Back To The Trenches, Games, Preservation, Love Leads to Madness), "The Catch" (Last Exit Brooklyn, Moondance, This Month's Messiah, Love of Freedom), "Boogaloo" (Light Comes Down, Talk Talk, Party in the Kremlin, Waiting, May Heaven Keep You) and "Rock N Roll Telephone" (Boom Bang Bang, Back 2b4, Punch A Hole in the Sky, Long Long Time, Speakeasy) being some of my personal favorites. I will now buy it with light speed, as well as a few others that you hipped me to that flew under the radar. The main thing with Nazareth is McCafferty's exceptional voice, and the versatility he shows in using it.....plus, Manny is a very tasty player with some surprising tones and textures to his varied arsenal. Enjoyed that. The arrival in the band of Zal Cleminson (fresh from the Alex Harvey Band) for the 'No Mean City' album gave the band a wee shot in the arm. BTW, the title 'No Mean City' comes from a 1935 novel by H. Kingsley Long, a journalist, and Alexander McArthur, an unemployed worker. It is an account of life in the Gorbals, a run-down slum district of Glasgow with the hard men and the razor gangs of the 1930's.

I'd say the difference in their work from 70s beast to 80s performer and now cover band is not just personal but they went from almost trend setters to flowing with the times. I would disagree a little on 'no jive and 'move me' I think there is some real solid music on those.
