  • A lot of youtubers talk about the toys, movies, tv shows, and activities we had when we us Gen-xers were growing up. But what about the food we had to eat??

I was born in 1977 so threw out the 80s and 90s my parents went back-and-forth cooking. My dad enjoyed cooking because his father ran a bar and grill and ran a diner at a bowling alley, in the 60s and 70s. he definitely taught a lot from what his father taught him. Somewhere around the late 80s early 90s my mom started getting rheumatoid arthritis so my dad handled the cooking. I looked back and maybe he wasn’t the greatest because the grilled burgers were charred and the steaks were always tough as leather. Soon he got to where he was pretty decent at it. Mostly made Hungarian goulash stroganoff. Here and there we had hamburger helper. I got pretty good at making scrambled eggs but can’t fry an egg to save my life for some reason. Probably because I overthink it. since I moved in in the house, my dad grew up in. I’ve been using the gas stove. Growing up we mostly had electric. though electric can its purpose, It’s nowhere near using gas. i’d love to be a chef, but unfortunately, I cannot multitask to save my life.

My mom was 36 when she had me, I was the youngest. My oldest brother was 10 years older than me. So as far as everyone being at the table at dinner, I don't remember that. Because my 3 older brothers were usually out doing stuff with friends when I was like 8 or so. My mom went to work when I started 1st grade so for meals I was on my own basically until dinner. For breakfast it was usually malt o meal or capn crunch with berries. I do remember that Wednesday was church night so we almost always had hotdogs. And Sundays were usually pot roast with potatoes and carrots. The meal I hated the most was salmon patties made out of canned salmon. I get sick just thinking about it..

Alphabit cereal ! Like a bowl of sugared glass shards if you ate it too fast. Had not seen it in decades, but a year ago, some showed up at Ollie's, and anyone late 40's or older was freaking out. I never saw it again.

Capn crunch used to tear the roof of our mouths up big time too.

I grew up in a house where the smoke alarm was used as an oven timer. That's why I worked as a cook throughout high school & university. Would you be willing to make a video showing your meat loaf recipe?

Nothing beats cooking good meals for your folks after you grew up with the 80's food. I remember cinnamon toast (buttered toast with a sprinkle of sugar and cinnamon), and my Dad made a great bowl of hot dogs and beans (Oscar M dogs and Bush's baked beans) IFYKYK Thanks for the video and the best of parts are at 7:07, 19:02, and 22:22. ;)
