Pete Ive been doing quite a bit of work with GarageBand for Church due to the current situation we find ourselves in. I’m Playing most of the instruments and utilise a couple of the Virtual instruments - The vocalists send me their independent tracks and I attempt to mix it all in - But have never had a true understanding of the true power of GarageBand and how to exploit all of the Tools - I’ve just spent the last 2 hrs binging on your content and What a treat - Thanks for the all the Tips and Keep up the Great Work - 👍😀

Pete Johns quick question what if im doing a cover and i got just the beat and my vocals... what should i be mixing ?? Nd how ?? Once again thank you so much
Hey there. Really depends on the track you are bringing in and how well mixed this is. I’m working on something for a client like this and ended up just adding a little reverb to the vocals and backing track, then used EQ, delay and compression on the vocal.
16:00 shows that big glitch Garage Band has to where it wont replay things sometimes if you try to play it again from the middle of a section. They should really fix that. Notice how at 16:00 you dont hear the Sweepimg Pad at all. Great videos!
Hey there. Yes, it’s actually something that is the case in most DAWs I have used. Because MIDI is just a data point triggering a virtual sound, of the play head doesn’t pass the note, it doesn’t trigger the sound. There’s no way from it to know what the sounds would be at the mid point. Does make it a little frustrating when mixing. What you can do is merge the track in to an audio track if you we ant to hear the playback at all times. th-cam.com/play/PLc8Xg_23Wa56tIxtD1AHcq_Cte5u2wrRd.html
Thank You Pete! I have using GB to make music track for my home videos. They have been Ok at best, but Im learning. Im no musician, all I can do is use the loops provided. Loads of fun but so frustrating when you cant find a beat you hear in your head. But, thanks so much.
You’re welcome my friend. Yes, it really is just about trial and error. Keep practicing and your songs will keep improving. I hope you enjoy the other videos here on the channel and consider subscribing. 👍
I know you touched on it but my understanding is that one of the best things you can do is listen to your mix on different sound systems and headphones, etc. to get a good well rounded analysis. Also taking a break to re-calibrate your ears I listening to other music or nothing at all was recommended to me. Another thing I like to do that you didn’t mention was turn on the analyzer feature for the EQ. I really like to see the sound waves in the location frequency that they are.
Yup. Reference listening on different speakers and/or in different environment is indeed very useful for mixing and mastering. And I have mixed feelings about the analyser. It can make me less inclined to use my ears and I tend to then rely on the visuals too much. But it can certainly be handy sometimes.

Great to hear my friend. I would start digging around the is playlist as it has quick videos showing how to use pretty much every effect in GarageBand. th-cam.com/play/PLc8Xg_23Wa56UTlzOg6CYtASLqyEeAaKi.html
Love your videos! Quick question: if I automate volume on GarageBand track to -6db and then export as WAV will GarageBand auto normalize that to 0 DB or will it remain at -6DB
It will auto normalise still. But it can help by pulling your overall peaks down. Basically it will simply normalise the loudest sound to 0dB so as long as you have dynamic range in your song you can just turn turn the input in mastering to give yourself more headroom.
Cheers Tim. Always appreciate your support. Gave you a shout out in a stream last week as you will always be the first person (apart from me) to own a Studio Live Today T-shirt. 😊
Hi Pete, first thank you for your valuable uploads, they are very helpful, I learned from one of your lessons how to merge and export the songs in one master track however the Issue I'm facing is after exporting the track the volume decrease and I think also the sound slightly changes. I tried to increase the volume to max on all the individual tracks before merging them but all I get on the final exported track is just more saturation and distorted sound without a significant volume increase. I'm wondering if you have a fix for this?
Hi Pete so enjoy you videos so helpful. I have now wrote my first song I say song very loosely 🤣🤣 2 questions 1 how to save 2 can I burn to disc or stick .If there is a video on this please let me know carry on the great work Regards Steve
Saving? Just exit the project and it is automatically saved. Exporting? Yup - plenty of options for this. I would check out my video about sharing from GarageBand here - th-cam.com/video/C1zyo4IbI5w/w-d-xo.html
A problem I’ve had with mixing is when the song has different dynamic sections ie quiet parts and louder parts. How do you balance the bass guitar volume across these sections? Do you have to use automation?
Hey Richard. I do use automation a lot when I need to significantly vary the volume. It is easier to try to play quieter too but automation can work wonders. I also used compression for more “automated” automation.
It's a pretty amazing app... especially considering it's free! I hope you get value from the other videos here on the channel and consider subscribing.
Hi Pete, I'm getting into mixing and mastering my original songs. I wanted to ask you does the volume at the top of the screen important while mixing songs?
Hey there. Not really. I recommend keeping the volume so it’s not hitting the red at all and the yellow too much. This video will help if you’re finding your volume is peaking. th-cam.com/video/ngGA8iz0ncc/w-d-xo.html
Checking out and enjoying out all your GarageBand videos as I am having a go at doing stuff on the iPad for thr first time. Just one question though. What mouse are you using and is it very hard to do this without one. Thanks!
I’ve used a few nice over time but settled on this one - th-cam.com/video/_nbZU0eYnQM/w-d-xo.html Here’s a video about connecting mice and keyboards - th-cam.com/video/PJCGENM7zj0/w-d-xo.html
Great video! I learned a lot. Can you please suggest me the pan settings for two track recording (vocal and acoustic guitar)?..it would be very helpful..
Two track recordings can be tough because there’s not really much you can do besides keep everything up the middle. What I have been doing lately is using the Wider plugin from Infected Mushroom to spread the guitar a little to give some stereo width. th-cam.com/video/PfKrZ8tJB4Y/w-d-xo.html
Hi! So I’m using my iPhone to attempt mixing in GarageBand and I have these headphones that was required for my DAW class. It is a Sony, it has a cord that can connect to an interface. Should I get an adapter to have it connect to my iPhone or could I attempt mixing and mastering without any headphones at all? Really awesome tutorial!
Hi Pete, thanks so much for all theses videos, I hope you are thriving! I have a question, it might be an idea for a video or you might have already covered it. I'm new to ipad, just got the new pro. Is it possible to make a new video and then edit it , add tracks in garage band?

hello pete a huge thank you for all your videos I have a huge problem the sound of my songs when I export them from garage band is always very weak, even after having applied, as you recommend it, a compressor and a limiter to do some mastering I therefore tend to mix with very high volumes so as not to lose even more volume in this video you recommend mixing with lower volumes telling us that garage band will normalize the song I tried, and my export sound is even weaker suddenly I am desperate, I have struggled for years with this problem of too low volume, I do not know what to do I don't want to get studio sound, but still there are limits! I really don't know what to do I mix I apply a limiter and a compressor (minimum) and I have a sound that is not even listenable in the car with the background bafles !! What do you advise ? I just want to have a strong enough sound so that my song can be listened to without needing a HiFI system with a high volume thanks in advance Pete for your help I wish you the best Marion (I'm french)
Hey there my friend. Have you tried any other standalone mastering apps? I would suggest checking out Final Touch or Grand Finale if you’re still having problems getting your masters to the level you want. And definitely record and mix at a lower volume to avoid GarageBand actually turning down your levels. Plenty of videos here on the channel explaining further. th-cam.com/video/kImp5LABg0w/w-d-xo.html

Pete Johns u earned 1 sub great job, we need more people like u in this world
Love your videos!
Great video & links. Cool!
Cheers Tim. Always appreciate your support. Gave you a shout out in a stream last week as you will always be the first person (apart from me) to own a Studio Live Today T-shirt. 😊
Great lesson!
Cheers Greg. 🙏

@@PeteJohnsMusic subscription done! ..please keep the useful mixing and mastering videos coming 👍🙂
Sounds like you may be exporting the overall tracks too loud? This. Idle might help with this - th-cam.com/video/mrVf0Lt6-2k/w-d-xo.html
God bless you for the greatest information bestowed unto me🙏
Nice!!! Glad to help.
Hi Pete so enjoy you videos so helpful. I have now wrote my first song I say song very loosely 🤣🤣 2 questions 1 how to save 2 can I burn to disc or stick .If there is a video on this please let me know carry on the great work
Regards
Steve
Saving? Just exit the project and it is automatically saved. Exporting? Yup - plenty of options for this. I would check out my video about sharing from GarageBand here - th-cam.com/video/C1zyo4IbI5w/w-d-xo.html
im late but this is gem. thanks alot
Very welcome my friend. I hope you get value from the other videos on the channel and consider subscribing if you haven’t already. 👍
You're very cool! I didn't know how many things can do on garageband
It's a pretty amazing app... especially considering it's free! I hope you get value from the other videos here on the channel and consider subscribing.
@@PeteJohnsMusic i'm already subscribed!!! Thank you
Hi Pete, I'm getting into mixing and mastering my original songs.
@@PeteJohnsMusic Thank you so much!
Checking out and enjoying out all your GarageBand videos as I am having a go at doing stuff on the iPad for thr first time. Just one question though. What mouse are you using and is it very hard to do this without one. Thanks!
I’ve used a few nice over time but settled on this one - th-cam.com/video/_nbZU0eYnQM/w-d-xo.html
Here’s a video about connecting mice and keyboards - th-cam.com/video/PJCGENM7zj0/w-d-xo.html
@@PeteJohnsMusic Will do that thanks :)
@@PeteJohnsMusic thanks a lot pete. It was very helpful 🙂
I would definitely get a lighting or USB-C to 3,5mm adapter and use wired headphones.
great resource

Hello sir,, I have one question,,
I didn’t find harmonica sound effects,, thank you 🙏
Hi there. There is no harmonica sound unfortunately. Perhaps there is a third party app?
Hi Pete, thanks so much for all theses videos, I hope you are thriving! I have a question, it might be an idea for a video or you might have already covered it. I'm new to ipad, just got the new pro. Is it possible to make a new video and then edit it , add tracks in garage band?
Hey there my friend. So you’re looking to import the audio of a video in to GarageBan then add tracks? I haven’t done anything like this but it sounds interesting!!
What’s your tipple? I want to send you a bottle you have taught me so much.

hello pete
a huge thank you for all your videos
I have a huge problem
the sound of my songs when I export them from garage band is always very weak, even after having applied, as you recommend it, a compressor and a limiter to do some mastering
I therefore tend to mix with very high volumes so as not to lose even more volume
in this video you recommend mixing with lower volumes telling us that garage band will normalize the song
I tried, and my export sound is even weaker suddenly
I am desperate, I have struggled for years with this problem of too low volume, I do not know what to do
I don't want to get studio sound, but still there are limits!
I really don't know what to do
I mix
I apply a limiter and a compressor (minimum)
and I have a sound that is not even listenable in the car with the background bafles !!
What do you advise ?
I just want to have a strong enough sound so that my song can be listened to without needing a HiFI system with a high volume
thanks in advance Pete for your help
I wish you the best
Marion (I'm french)
Hey there my friend. Have you tried any other standalone mastering apps? I would suggest checking out Final Touch or Grand Finale if you’re still having problems getting your masters to the level you want. And definitely record and mix at a lower volume to avoid GarageBand actually turning down your levels. Plenty of videos here on the channel explaining further.
