@Flippidisc That's quite harsh & rude of you. Her voice isn't generic nor is the instrumentation. The voice & music presented here, fits their unique interpretation of the song very well. They don't have to beat their instruments to death to get the point across. I've heard MUCH WORSE getting much higher praise. I know who Gillian Welch is & she is a CO-writer of the song, along with David Rawlings. Bottom line, she has a different style. Nothing more, nothing less. You offer nothing more than a total generic opinion & nothing more to back it up. I don't even know who Amanda Cook is. I only learned of her just today actually. I do know this much about her: she sounds exactly live, as she does on CD & in this day & time of "auto tuned idiots", that's a far cry from what's filling the air at live shows. Who am I? I'm a nobody that's travelled across this country & a couple others playing music. I've recorded in Gerald Crabb's studio as well as Scott Vestal's studio in Greenbriar just outside of Nashville, just to name a couple. I worked on The Cumberland Highlanders TV Show playing banjo for James Monroe before I was even 17. I had never met the man nor played any of his music before & I cut it just fine that day which by the way, was my first ever appearance on TV. You can find the videos right here on YT. I've jammed with Mark Chesnut in the basement of a hotel in Bergin, Norway. I've stood elbow to elbow with Vince Gill & a buddy of mine backstage at IBMA talking guitars. I had a 30 minute conversation about bluegrass music in a Nashville bar with Keith Urban. I've hugged Jeanie C. Riley. I'd say I'm qualified to weigh in here. What about you? Who are you & what have you done to give you the credentials or right to criticize her AT ALL?
Nothing wrong with her attempt at the song but it’s like another musician doing a cover of Gimmie Shelter ...the best you can ever hope for is good ...
