Looks like an ancient version of the current pipa. I wouldn't be surprised if its strings were actually made of silk (in fact the master is not wearing any plastic nails)
I believe this fretting is an older style that was in common use before the mid-20th century. this in turn was an updated form of the even older pipa that usually only had 4-6 large frets on the upper neck, those horn frets you see on his pipa. The modern one with chromatic frets was made in the early 20th century and became the standard in the music conservatories especially after 1949. It was favoured because it could play with modern style orchestras.
What a great rendition! I learned this piece when I had the good fortune to study with Ms. Min Xiao-Fen, it's a wonderful piece to play, right up there with Spring Snow. His pipa looks like an old style one...I notice it has a different fretboard, with a few 'missing' frets (compared to mine). Anyone know anything about that???
This pipa is very famous. It's from late Qing Dynasty. It is named: THE FIRST PIPA UNDER THE HEAVEN, by the Emperor. Since Qin Dynasty (BC221), pipa is always changing and developing ... So this pipa from Qing Dynasty is not same as yours. After Master Lin died, his son Lin Jiaqing as the heir to this school of art, inherited this pipa.

Master Lin's pipa is in Pentatonic scale not Chromatic scale ,thus fewer frets and much more harmonious with human feelings.

His pipa has a lot fewer frets, thereby it gets a greater volume and a better sound. How did the two versions of construction come by, anyone knows?

这是被清·光绪皇帝赐封为“天下第一琵琶”陈子敬用过的清代琵琶。 陈子敬字希夷，号宗礼。生于清道光16年，于光绪17年病逝（1837-1891），享年54岁。陈子敬弹得一手好琵琶。陈子敬的儿子叫陈文甫，先父林石城二十多岁时，陈文甫已九十多岁。据陈文甫对先父林石城讲，当时上海没有开音乐会的习惯，但有摆琵琶擂台或琵琶会的情况。陈子敬经常被琵琶擂台请去当擂主。清光绪皇帝的生父醇亲王到上海看到听到陈子敬的演奏后，自己也想学琵琶，把陈子敬请到北京，住到醇王府，授予三品冠带。后来陈子敬想告老回乡时，醇亲王以官职、金银、绸缎来挽留，陈均不愿接受。醇亲王就请光绪皇帝赐封“天下第一琵琶”给陈子敬。
陈子敬的这把琴是把老红木琵琶，头部饰有一块圆形秋海棠汉玉，四个白牛角轸子，历经岁月，已经晶莹明亮，尤如玛瑙。这把工艺精良，音色醇厚丰满的清代琵琶，它的身长，比民国时制作的要长。先父林石城先生告诉我，高占春师傅来我家学习琵琶时，我请他换面板，音响特好，为此，我让高制作新琵琶时，也按这长度来制作，音响也都很好，全国乐器制作比赛时，高占春制作的琵琶获得第一名。后来部里也根据这个长度定作标准了。先父林石城先生还告我，陈文甫先生对我父亲林石城说：“这把琵琶自我父亲病逝后，我一直带在身边，后又放在上海家中。我年迈牙齿常有病，常到住在嵩山路（靠近延安中路）的徐医生处看牙病。徐医生会弹古琴与琵琶，我把这把琵琶送给了徐医生”。 先父林石城先生后得知徐医生又把琵琶卖给了吴梦飞先生。文革中先父林石城先生向吴梦飞先生情商，为使浦东派的琵琶仍归浦东派，请他卖给林石城先生。吴梦飞先生既是先父林石城先生的老师沈浩初的好友，先父林石城先生也向他请教过，所以，吴一口答允。先父林石城先生卖掉了几把红木琵琶，去买回了这把“天下第一琵琶”陈子敬的琴。
这把“天下第一琵琶”陈子敬的琵琶现遵先父林石城的遗嘱传给林嘉庆...

do they have pipa that are a little softer in sounds? I find most recordings to be aggressive on the ears. maybe just playing without false nails?
Ur required to have fake nails otherwise nails will break
