    In Vietnam we had 81 mm mortars. The Chinese supplied the NVA with 82 mm mortars. We laughed at first that their's was a "silly millimeter larger." Until we found out our rounds would fire in their tubes, but their's were too large for our tubes. Live and learn.

      @@s4uss Must be a comfort for the 2 repressed generations whose "liberation" by Communist idealistic terrorists delayed the economic development of their country. Ironic right now that they are embracing closer economic relations with the democratic former enemy so enthusiastically.
      The Communist terrorist blight attacking Ukraine attempting to prevent their economic progress, in fact steal or destroy it by force, shows how evil some can be and the ongoing tendency of the Communist dictators for violent repression.

      @@Gnosis639 Mortars have a lot of recoil. When on the ground after several shells they dig themselves deeper in with the round large base. The best way to use them mounted is on an armored vehicle with a very solid steel floor like a BTR or Bradley. I don't know if a truck bed is strong enough for that.
      The 60 mm mortar is easily handled holding the handle and the lower part on the ground while loading the shell. It can be used on almost every type of vehicle even a passenger car with nothing special to install.

The allied soldiers were amazed and baffled by how thoroughly the Germans had build some of their trenches, with deep dugouts against artillery, "comfortable" quarters even fortified with concrete.
      The germans knew they were in it for the long run. However that ended for the Germans in WW1, there is alot to say for making your soldiers be as comfortable as they can no matter how long they will be somewhere.

      The way those big Mortars bounce around it is very difficult to get pin point accuracy. Inevitably, the mortar tube is in a slightly different position after each round. The mortars are horribly effective at Infantry suppression though and quite capable of rendering entire squads combat ineffective if they even get close !

      I partially agree, I think everyone has been cautious due to overestimating Russia and a possible underestimation of Ukrainian resourcefulness and preparedness.
      If Russian strategy hadn't been so poor at the start of the (full scale) invasion, then I might think that the fate of Ukraine would have been a done deal.
      But it was, and Ukraine has made Putin's generals pay dearly for their hubris.

    • @garymoore2535
      @garymoore2535 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In fairness the Ukrainians would not have anywhere near as much land to recover if they had acted to blow key bridges and airfields when told by CIA and MI6 that Russia was about to invade. Not doing so made it far far easier for the Russians to take territory in the early stages. Now it has to be done the hard way unfortunately.....
