  • Julian Bream playing the Malcolm Arnold Guitar Concerto at the Royal Albert Hall on 20 July 1991, with the BBC Concert Orchestra, conducted by Barry Wordsworth. Composed and premiered in 1959, this was its first Proms performance. At the end, Malcolm Arnold performs some worrying antics with Julian's guitar!

I remember watching this interview and performance. I think it was the very first programme I committed to videotape, from the TV. Imagine being able to view something again and again, at will…

That was a phenomenal performance, it was also a great surprise to see Sir Malcolm Arnold himself coming up to the stage. That concerto was composed for and dedicated to the soloist, Julian Bream. That guitar concerto is my favorite concerto by Sir Malcolm Arnold, I am a fan of Sir Malcolm Arnold's music.

Very nice and beautiful performance. Overall, all the musicians played very well and a funny scene where the conductor turns the page for Julian Bream in part 3. And the British humor at the end when the audience applauded. Historic performance.

Anyone else go "yeeek!" When Malcolm Arnold swung that guitar over his head? 😂

This was written in the late fifties, round about the time of Whistle Down the Wind, with which it shares some characteristics, I think. It's a really marvellous piece. It says here that this was its premier, if this is true, I don't understand why it wasn't performed before.

This was its first performance at the Proms, I've added some clarification to the description. I believe Julian Bream gave the first performance in Aldeburgh in 1959.

No unfortunately, only the ‘Bream at the BBC’ compilation programme but that is already on TH-cam. The BBC iPlayer site has some good masterclass programmes and a concert, if you can access it.
