    Grey cast iron has superior vibration dampening compared to any other kind. This is why it was used for many machine tools.

    • @BatCaveCreations
      @BatCaveCreations  ปีที่แล้ว

      I heard that before but idk enough about the metal types to understand how that is beneficial in a plane? do you know?

    • @seanmac5507
      @seanmac5507 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Vibration can be bad for surface finishes. The Stanley propaganda for the Bedrock design, for example, emphasized it's resistance to vibration. How detectable this might be in a hand plane is questionable but my point is that grey cast iron is not an inferior material. The impact resistance of ductile iron comes with a cost in terms of worse vibration resistance. No free lunches in engineering 🙂 @@BatCaveCreations

      @@seanmac5507 fair enough! Thank you for sharing!!!

    • @Dennis-vh8tz
      @Dennis-vh8tz ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Definitely true compared to white iron or steel; however, ductile iron is pretty similar to similar to grey iron (both have graphite inclusion, flakes for grey iron, spheroids for ductile iron), so the vibration damping might be similar, though that's just speculation on my part - I looked but couldn't find any information on this.

    • @seanmac5507
      @seanmac5507 ปีที่แล้ว

      Grey iron is inelastic and soaks up the vibrations compared to ductile iron. This is an absolutely uncontroversial fact in materials technology. " Grey vs Ductile iron vibration " might be a useful Google search for you 🙂@@Dennis-vh8tz

    I would not like the hex wrench for the chip breaker. Deal breaker for me. I am more used to the lever type blade adjuster, and that has been the most difficult thing for me to get right. I have actually taken to using a small wood hammer to move it a tiny bit side to side. It is just simpler for me, and more accurate. I do have one of the Woodriver planes, and think it is as good as anything else I own. My #4s are mostly Stanley, and they are not the heavy duty ones.

      Ah! Good catch! Can you explain the difference so I can pin this?

    • @Dennis-vh8tz
      @Dennis-vh8tz ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Is that 01 iron or O1 steel? Reading your post cast O1 steel is the first thing that comes to my mind, and cryogenic treatment would imply that it was also quenched and tempered, which would then explain the 20 foot test mentioned in another post. Properly heat treated steel would survive being dropped better than any cast iron.

    • @BatCaveCreations
      @BatCaveCreations  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @Grovesrussell that is a valid point. I have a LN iron in during that video but I never got the LN to do that. The chip breaker is LN also, I believe. It's been a while now but still a valid point. I'll have to test that out and with diff chip breakers

  • @jerryspumberg9810
    @jerryspumberg9810 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't know about the Veritas clogging. It could be the iron is not sharp enough or the mouth needs to be closed a bit. I don't own it. How about asking them? Veritas is great at customer service in answering questions. I have Lie Neilsen and the older Clifton planes, each with its' own advantages and I like them both as different friends. When set up properly they do good work. Having a background in structural engineering each material [Gray vs. Ductal] has its' advantages but breaking when dropped is not a problem to either as one of the comments below point out. I'm not going to go into the iron [blade] material points, just let's say all can be sharpened too crazy sharp one faster than the other. All will lose its 'sharpness one faster than the other and really doesn't matter if you hone as you go. I have a couple of Bedrocks, a 5.5 and a 7 and after a little light heat treatment they almost keep up with the others except on really hard difficult grain wood. I've thought about new replacement irons but went no further. Viv-ally-Different! By the way I have restored Bailly planes that can keep up on most woods. Photo Finish Tie!

    • @BatCaveCreations
      @BatCaveCreations  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! I haven't reached out to LV yet but I may, although it sounds like it's just a common thing with the plane lol
      I agree about diff planes doing diff things, for example I love my clico clifton with the 45* and the veritas with the 55* idk why just love the feel and the finish with that set up.
