Like for me, (I work with dogs for a living,) people will ask for my favorite dog breed and it's a three-way tie for first place. Or my top 5 favorite daycare dogs is actually 6 dogs, I count the pair of siblings as one bc I needed the extra space on the list! (And of course the daycare list has to be separate from my pet sitting/walking list of favorites bc there's NO way I could choose-) It happens 😅
Normandie was and continues to be one of the most beautiful ships ever built. I’d have put her higher on the list. The France was also a beautiful ship before the Norwegians got ahold of her.
@@randomrazr Yes, the BRETAGNE. There were two visions for it. An all Tourist Class version with a radical new design by Vladimir Yourkevich, and a conventional two funneled design, which the CGT ultimately decided on, but, alas, war got in the way.

Sadder still, Russian emigrant Yourkevich was IN NYC when it caught fire. He rushed to the pier, begging the fireboats to stop, and let it burn out. They refused, and it capsized that night. Many suspected N*zi sabotage, but not true: outrageous incompetence States side. Old saying: "If truth is the 1st casualty of war, beauty is most certainly the 2nd".

I don't get why so many are against Normandie, either. She was a beautiful ship and I can only imagine what she could have done to aid the allies in WWII. With her speed and size combined with QM and QE, there is no telling. Great live stream, sad I had to miss it.

Sadly Americans these days largely dislike France and the French. This is a “freedom fries” knee-jerk reaction to France maintaining its own foreign policy whenever Uncle Sam takes his English poodle out for a walk. These people should remember that the US probably wouldn’t exist but for France.
For some people she may be a bit too much, her public rooms were really impressive for like a museum, but for a ship were you live for a couple of days, they seem not so comfortable.
@chrisi06 Sure, and that's fine, but feeling that a ship is too grand for one's preferences and comfort is different from hatred and disdain. It shouldn't prevent anyone from appreceating world-class craftsmanship, innovative hydrodynamic design, and technology that changed the way ships were made and raised the bar in style, elegance, and service. Normandie was more than a match for Queen Mary's speed even though she used far less fuel, because of her forward-thinking engineering. There's just so much to say and it's hard to understand why any appreciator of ships would hate this one, even if she was fancier than they happen to prefer.
Glad to see a fair share of Clydebuilt ships here. It's only a shame we don't built ships like the Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth, QE2, Lusitania, and Aquitania on Glasgow's River Clyde anymore. Brings a tear to a Scotsman's eye.

If I was a crazy billionaire who dreamed of building a modern ocean liner, I'd pick nowhere else to build her than Clydebank. After all, my favorite liner, the Queen Mary, was built there.
I think Aquitania is hugely under appreciated , and would love to see a whole video comparing her with the contemporary Olympic class . Both Olympic and Aquitania saw long service lives , but Aquitania went on to be the longest surviving four stacker .

Here's my story on my favorite Ocean Liner of all time, the SS Normandie. All your choices are basically the same that I would have listed. Back in 2008, I was living in San Francisco and I was invited to participate in a focus group about a new kind of credit card. There were 18 people in the group and we all had to introduce our self's by answering this question, If you had a time machine where would you go and why? I was the second to last to answer the question and everyone wanted to go into the future. When it came to me I calmly said "May 29, 1935." Everybody looked at me with questions in their eyes and asked me "Why that date?" I simply said "That I would have loved to have been on the maiden voyage of the greatest ocean liner ever conceived the SS Normandie." I explained that the SS Normandie was a brief moment in time and that her design transcended a time that will never come again. Plus I was also on the Board of the Art Deco Society - I lead all the Art Deco Architecture Historic Walks. Plus I was a known Francophile. I love everything French - Architecture, Fashion ( Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Balmain), Automotive Design (Gabriel Voisin, Talbot-Lago, Delage, and Delahaye), and Food. During World War II my father served in the European Theater when he was sent home to the United States he sailed on the RMS Aquitania and he would tell me how beautiful she was inside even though it was 1945 and she was still outfitted as a troop ship.

Show the pools, the tennis courts, the gyms of the liners. It would be fascinating. And then -- I suggest covering the transition from liner to cruise ship. I worked on liners when they were aquiverlent to buses today but far more beautiful. It cheers me that you love liners as much as I do. I’m afraid cruse ships do not have thee aesthetic consideration’s that ocean liner’s had. Spending six years bobbing around the world’s oceans in a tin can but wouldn’t swop that with any other experience I loved it. Thank you for your postings they make me feel quiet nostalgic.

Growing up in New York City in the 50's and 60's, living on the lower bay Narrows, the passenger ships were easily identified, and I could name them from a distance without seeing their nameboard. The biggest sensation was when the QE 2 arrived. Now I would be hard pressed to see a difference between cruise ships and livestock carrying ships. The lifeboats would be one clue that it is carrying people instead of cows.
There's a good reason you would be hard pressed to see a difference between cruise ships and live stock carrying ships. They're both ugly as hell and the only real difference is that human passengers willingly pay to be treated like cattle and eat often poisonous food, while the cattle are traveling unknowingly and in misery to their impending slaughter, sometimes to be later be eaten by the passengers of the cruise ships.

I just crossed the Atlantic on QM2 for the first time. I so agree that the Cunard Queens are simply incomparable. And the sound of the horn they moved from QM1 to QM2 is like nothing else. Thanks for this.

There’s no great hate for the NORMANDIE. Just a very small group who are insanely jealous because their preferred liner doesn’t get the praise, love, and adoration that NORMANDIE receives and deserves. She was a chic, beautiful, stunning French mademoiselle and no ship has ever surpassed her overall. And no ship ever will.
I don't like Normadie cause she was to much in my opinion, not because I'm jealous, that and the small group of fans who hate on people that don't praise her

As an ex marine coast station radio operator, I can say that the MGY's operator was not being deliberately "rude". The reason's why the "SU" was sent to the Californian was due to the signal from her close proximity overwhelming the MGY's reception. The Marconi radio installation aboard Titanic was primarily to earn revenue for them from radiotelegrams from passengers and the shipping line. It was of course used for safety of life at sea purposes, such as ice and meteological reports, and for emergency events.
I have loved ocean liners ever since a child in Southampton where I could see the funnel of the QE2 whenever she was in from just up the road from my parents house. I spent a wealth of time at the Wool House museum each Saturday morning when I wasn't playing soccer and even began writing a book when I was about nine on the "Great Ocean Liners". It was never finished but I think there's still a copy at my parent's house. I've now visited the QM twice, my favourite ship as well. Such an awe inspiring sight yet somehow spooky and quite saddening to see her deteriorating state. Unfortunately though, my father's cabin, he was the last ship's carpenter, was removed along with the third class cabins but I still have the brass plate he took from the 'carpenters' mess.

At 17:23, you mention the "Stars & Stripes" flying from Europa's foremast - well this is in fact the city flag of Europa's port of registry Bremen (my hometown!), where the headquarters of the North German Lloyd were (merged in 1970 with the HAPAG (Hamburg-Amerikanische Packetfahrt-Actien-Gesellschaft) of Hamburg to become today's Hapag-Lloyd). Bremen was built by the shipyard A.G. Weser in Bremen and commissioned in 1929, whereas Europa was built by Blohm & Voss in Hamburg and commisioned in 1930 (the delay being caused by an on board fire during fitting out and the subsequent repairs). I recently stayed overnight on the Queen Mary (and had some very strange unexplainable experiences). I wish they had funding to give her a facelift. Even the suites are kind of rundown. But what a beauty. I'm glad she ranked #1 Mike!
Well deserved mention for the "Beautiful Sisters" of P&O's 'Strath' ships. All of which, i.i.r.c, were built in my home town, on which they bestowed at least two legacies. One, of comparatively short duration, apparently being a disproportionate number of local houses boasting very smart buff coloured exterior paintwork. The second and more longer lasting being a series of Walney Island street names that still commemorate them today.

I always preferred the Queen Elizabeth over the Queen Mary. The latter always looked ungainly, while the former and Normandie had beautiful lines and proportion.
I remember as a child with my dad driving through Peireus .. and I looked right, and down this street I saw the France, with the towering “France” lettering on the top part of the ship
There's a cheese brand that is named after the French liner the Ile de France and has the logo of a two funnel ship like the liner in her post-war years.
I could not agree more than your number one I am biased as I served on the Queen Elizabeth in the 60"s a wonderful ship. I also served on Mauritania 2 , Chusan and Himalaya Totally enjoy your channel as a very old sea dog .
Another interesting Quirk about the Aquitainia is that she was a Beautiful ship! But they had to give her a second wheelhouse because the original one in the photograph was apparently too low so she was given a second one above the one in the photo which just made her even more stunning to look at
"The Lurline" (pronounced "Lurleen") was my mom's favorite ship as she worked for the Matson Line. She had beautiful first class menus that you could tape together as my big sister did, to make a sort of history of Hawaii in Art Deco style...
We went to see the American Star off the coast of Fuerteventura in the late 90s. We hired a jeep and drove across the island. There were no proper roads to it. By the time we seen her she had broken in half. It was a sad sight, though you could still see she was a beautiful ship. The sea around there is very rough, it’s amazing she lasted as long as she did, sitting there with huge waves crashing against her.
2 ships of iconic designs, ahead of their day, worthy of mention were the Canberra with it's rear twin funnels and the Oriana with it's dormant false funnel Both beautiful ships. Canberra a troop ship in the Falklands war too
I don’t have a top ten, just a top three: NORMANDIE, QUEEN MARY, and the UNITED STATES. After that, there are just ships that I really like. Some other favorites: CHAMPLAIN, CONTE DI SAVOIA, QUEEN ELIZABETH, ILE DE FRANCE, L’ATLANTIQUE and several others.
You mentioned the awe of seeing an ocean liner pull up and how you don't get the same thing with cruise ships, and I wanted to share an experience! Unfortunately, I don't have the same experience seeing any ocean liners in operation... Only ever seen the Japanese ocean liner NYK Hikawa Maru which is permanently harbored in Yokohama as a floating museum. Interestingly, though, the day I discovered the Hikawa Maru (just happened to be wandering around Yokohama a few months ago), JUST next to it was docked a destroyer from the JMSDF (maritime self-defense force). I've seen cruise ships before, moving and docked, and it was of some interest to me just to see a massive ship moving, but both the Hikawa Maru and the destroyer were simply *gorgeous* in a different way. Hastily took photos of both ships as best I could (although none turned out as stunning as both ships were), but the most AMAZING thing happened when the destroyer pulled out of the harbor followed by several other destroyers from areas I hadn't seen, all making their departure together into the greater Tokyo Bay. Though I'm much more into ocean liners overall, watching the convoy of destroyers head out was a totally unexpected but extremely memorable moment for me. I hope to have more experiences like that in the future!
For a Dutch liner, the SS Rotterdam, run by the Holland Amerika Lijn, would have been a nice inclusion. Which has nothing to do with the fact that I used to live in the port of Rotterdam for 20 years, the port where the SS Rotterdam is restored and functioning as a hotel 😉
It would be interesting to hear you talk about the second France, which was launched just a few days (weeks ?) after the titanic and had a really similar design, with a lot of improvement that, I think, were implemented even before the Titanic sinking. The France/Norway is the third of its name, and the first was, I believe, a ship from the late 19th century. Anyway, greetings from France (the country with the baguette and stinky cheese ^^)
Without entering the ranking, perhaps Michelangelo, Raffaello, Andrea Doria, Eugenio Costa and Achille Lauro, could deserve a mention both for their elegance and history. Anyway, this channel is really original. Good job!
Dreadnought entered service in 1906, not 1909 ;) The picture with the Heinkel HE 58 shows not Europa, it's her sister Bremen, because it's not the stars and stripes but the flag of the city Bremen on her mast ^^
On your point about Olympic and Titanic having shared heads in 1st Class, it's what naval ships are like. Even officers share heads/showers except the CO, XO, and Navigator (on some ship classes).
Love your channel. Love all these ships, but surprised to see the Olympic class in the #6 spot. Even though 2 of 3 sank, I don't think you can beat the elegant lines and beauty of that class. They really started the supersizing and over the top luxury of shipping. The German Imperator class were larger, but no where near as elegant. Not sure any ship was as well balanced visually as the Olympic class, and there were a lot of beauties afloat.

They're both ugly as hell and the only real difference is that human passengers willingly pay to be treated like cattle and eat often poisonous food, while the cattle are traveling unknowingly and in misery to their impending slaughter, sometimes to be later be eaten by the passengers of the cruise ships.
Livestock carriers before WW1 were more elegant than today's cruise ships!

There’s no great hate for the NORMANDIE. Just a very small group who are insanely jealous because their preferred liner doesn’t get the praise, love, and adoration that NORMANDIE receives and deserves. She was a chic, beautiful, stunning French mademoiselle and no ship has ever surpassed her overall. And no ship ever will.

I was so happy to see you put the Ballin Trio on this list … having been heartbroken at your previous critiques of these ladies. Then you smashed my heart to pieces by leaving off the Nieuw Amsterdam - the absolute most beautiful ship ever built. Ahhh Mike … you kill me. I’ve actually stayed on the Rotterdam, which is a hotel in Rotterdam now. Wonderful experience to board an actual historic ocean liner.

As an ex marine coast station radio operator, I can say that the MGY's operator was not being deliberately "rude". The reason's why the "SU" was sent to the Californian was due to the signal from her close proximity overwhelming the MGY's reception.
The Marconi radio installation aboard Titanic was primarily to earn revenue for them from radiotelegrams from passengers and the shipping line. It was of course used for safety of life at sea purposes, such as ice and meteological reports, and for emergency events.

RMS Queen Mary 2 is my top 1 favorite ocean liner
I have loved ocean liners ever since a child in Southampton where I could see the funnel of the QE2 whenever she was in from just up the road from my parents house. I spent a wealth of time at the Wool House museum each Saturday morning when I wasn't playing soccer and even began writing a book when I was about nine on the "Great Ocean Liners". It was never finished but I think there's still a copy at my parent's house. I've now visited the QM twice, my favourite ship as well. Such an awe inspiring sight yet somehow spooky and quite saddening to see her deteriorating state. Unfortunately though, my father's cabin, he was the last ship's carpenter, was removed along with the third class cabins but I still have the brass plate he took from the 'carpenters' mess.
My parents did a trip from Wellington to New York on JVO in 1961. They enjoyed it a lot. Thank you for another great video.

At 17:23, you mention the "Stars & Stripes" flying from Europa's foremast - well this is in fact the city flag of Europa's port of registry Bremen (my hometown!), where the headquarters of the North German Lloyd were (merged in 1970 with the HAPAG (Hamburg-Amerikanische Packetfahrt-Actien-Gesellschaft) of Hamburg to become today's Hapag-Lloyd). Bremen was built by the shipyard A.G. Weser in Bremen and commissioned in 1929, whereas Europa was built by Blohm & Voss in Hamburg and commisioned in 1930 (the delay being caused by an on board fire during fitting out and the subsequent repairs). I recently stayed overnight on the Queen Mary (and had some very strange unexplainable experiences). I wish they had funding to give her a facelift. Even the suites are kind of rundown. But what a beauty. I'm glad she ranked #1 Mike!

Well deserved mention for the "Beautiful Sisters" of P&O's 'Strath' ships. All of which, i.i.r.c, were built in my home town, on which they bestowed at least two legacies. One, of comparatively short duration, apparently being a disproportionate number of local houses boasting very smart buff coloured exterior paintwork. The second and more longer lasting being a series of Walney Island street names that still commemorate them today.

Normandie is my favorite ship actually
I always preferred the Queen Elizabeth over the Queen Mary. The latter always looked ungainly, while the former and Normandie had beautiful lines and proportion.

I remember as a child with my dad driving through Peireus .. and I looked right, and down this street I saw the France, with the towering “France” lettering on the top part of the ship
There's a cheese brand that is named after the French liner the Ile de France and has the logo of a two funnel ship like the liner in her post-war years.
There is also a cheese brand named after the NORMANDIE

Another interesting Quirk about the Aquitainia is that she was a Beautiful ship! But they had to give her a second wheelhouse because the original one in the photograph was apparently too low so she was given a second one above the one in the photo which just made her even more stunning to look at
"The Lurline" (pronounced "Lurleen") was my mom's favorite ship as she worked for the Matson Line. She had beautiful first class menus that you could tape together as my big sister did, to make a sort of history of Hawaii in Art Deco style...
Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse is the liner my great-grandmother immigrated to America on.
Solid reasons for the #1 pick
We went to see the American Star off the coast of Fuerteventura in the late 90s. We hired a jeep and drove across the island. There were no proper roads to it. By the time we seen her she had broken in half. It was a sad sight, though you could still see she was a beautiful ship. The sea around there is very rough, it’s amazing she lasted as long as she did, sitting there with huge waves crashing against her.

I don’t have a top ten, just a top three: NORMANDIE, QUEEN MARY, and the UNITED STATES. After that, there are just ships that I really like. Some other favorites: CHAMPLAIN, CONTE DI SAVOIA, QUEEN ELIZABETH, ILE DE FRANCE, L’ATLANTIQUE and several others.

You mentioned the awe of seeing an ocean liner pull up and how you don't get the same thing with cruise ships, and I wanted to share an experience!
Unfortunately, I don't have the same experience seeing any ocean liners in operation... Only ever seen the Japanese ocean liner NYK Hikawa Maru which is permanently harbored in Yokohama as a floating museum. Interestingly, though, the day I discovered the Hikawa Maru (just happened to be wandering around Yokohama a few months ago), JUST next to it was docked a destroyer from the JMSDF (maritime self-defense force). I've seen cruise ships before, moving and docked, and it was of some interest to me just to see a massive ship moving, but both the Hikawa Maru and the destroyer were simply *gorgeous* in a different way.
Hastily took photos of both ships as best I could (although none turned out as stunning as both ships were), but the most AMAZING thing happened when the destroyer pulled out of the harbor followed by several other destroyers from areas I hadn't seen, all making their departure together into the greater Tokyo Bay. Though I'm much more into ocean liners overall, watching the convoy of destroyers head out was a totally unexpected but extremely memorable moment for me.
I hope to have more experiences like that in the future!

For a Dutch liner, the SS Rotterdam, run by the Holland Amerika Lijn, would have been a nice inclusion. Which has nothing to do with the fact that I used to live in the port of Rotterdam for 20 years, the port where the SS Rotterdam is restored and functioning as a hotel 😉
It would be interesting to hear you talk about the second France, which was launched just a few days (weeks ?) after the titanic and had a really similar design, with a lot of improvement that, I think, were implemented even before the Titanic sinking. The France/Norway is the third of its name, and the first was, I believe, a ship from the late 19th century.

On your point about Olympic and Titanic having shared heads in 1st Class, it's what naval ships are like. Even officers share heads/showers except the CO, XO, and Navigator (on some ship classes).

Love your channel. Love all these ships, but surprised to see the Olympic class in the #6 spot. Even though 2 of 3 sank, I don't think you can beat the elegant lines and beauty of that class. They really started the supersizing and over the top luxury of shipping. The German Imperator class were larger, but no where near as elegant. Not sure any ship was as well balanced visually as the Olympic class, and there were a lot of beauties afloat.
