So happy to finally hear you chat all about this production! I am still on cloud nine from when I saw this and was seated next to this delightful woman, who ended up being THE JEREMEY JORDAN'S mother. My Broadway fangirl self just about died. She was such a proud mama. 💚
Also "Daiiiiiiiiisy" has been playing on a loop in my head since November. Cannot wait for this cast album to eventually drop!

Just saw it on broadway, for anyone curious- it seems they took your note about Gatsby entering later and gave Nick the opening number (which is great because he rocks it)

The jacket on the hanger is meant to allude to the pink suit, and the bears are all Paper Mill shows too 😅

I was a frequent visitor to Paper Mill Playhouse more than 60 years ago!!!! Saw all of the greats including Liza Minnelli as an ingenue, the lead in Carnival!! Among many other shows, both musicals and plays.....

I saw it at PMP as well and came away with far more positives than negatives. I loved the staging and lighting. There are some difficult visual elements highly associated with this story (like the vintage cars and the pool) and they brought them all to life very creatively. The cast was obviously great. Sam pauly managed to steal every scene she was in, and I was surprised how charmed I was by jeremy jordan in some of gatsby's more awkward and nervous moments. I also liked the music more than I have from a new musical in a long time. I never considered whether it was period appropriate although it definitely had a jazzy feel, but the melodies felt familiar and nostalgic in a similarly effective way (though maybe I was picking up on the 90s vibe you mentioned). My biggest negative was actually the ending. Without spoiling too much, it's a tragic story, and I they did that, but then Nick Caraway puts his CliffNotes hat on and comes out to lampshade "the point" of the story for the audience and make the message happy so they can have one more upbeat ensemble moment. So unnecessary, and having such a big misstep (for me) be the last thing left me feeling less positive about the whole thing as I walked out the door.

I agree with you that "For Her" is the best song in the score! I can't stop humming this song.

I saw “The Great Gatsby” at the Paper Mill, but it was after the trial-run was frozen. The audience that night overwhelmingly loved the show. While I only liked (but did not love) the musical, it was definitely better than most of the trash that ends up on Broadway. Especially, since it only needed a little bit more work to be a solid and crowd-pleasing show. The cast was incredible and agree that Jeremy Jordan’s solo is the strongest song.
My main issue is staging “The Great Gatsby” in the Broadway Theatre. I saw the “Fiddler on the Roof” revival there. My friend and I were in the second row of the front mezzanine, and while I usually prefer the mezzanine, it felt far away from the stage. The theater is just way too long.

SO excited as a huge Jeremy Jordan fan. Saw him in both Newsies and Little Shop and can't wait to see him in TGG. Your theater knowledge and extensive homework continues to astound me and is greatly appreciated. I am curious though...has this ever happened before? Where 2 musicals of the same topic/title have been on broadway at the same time? Thanks again for all of your wonderful content !

I saw this at Papermill and loved it. I too was looking forward to the changes. Just saw it last night on Broadway and must say I felt 90% of the changes were for the worse! Sophisticated wasn't the best song but they replaced it with a song that was so underwhelming.

Hunchback hasn't made it to Broadway because it is too dark for Disney. When your main character straight up kills a guy, yea, not something they want for the Disney brand. Although, given the state of Disney, they should probably start taking more risks.

The Great Gatsby will be the fifth show to premiere at Papermill and make the move to Broadway. The other four are Newsies, Honeymoon in Vegas, Bandstand, and A Bronx Tale. Jeremy Jordan will be 2-2 with Papermill shows.
Next time you visit try the Millburn Diner so you can have the full Jersey experience!

Chiming in before checking out MickeyJo's opinion since I saw this at the Papermill! On the one hand, I think they might have missed the moral of the story a bit (Daisy did absolutely nothing wrong in this musical, and I am 99% sure that was not accurate to the book). But overall, it was absolutely joyous as a theater experience. Great costuming, fun sets, solid songs. Jeremy Jordan as Gatsby panicking through a patter song as he waits for Daisy to show up was a highlight.

I've heard some of the songs & it feels like a fun show. I think the problem is it's a very crowded season so the show may get lost in the shuffle. It's obvious they wanted to get this open though before the other GG gains traction so hope it works in their favor.

No matter how others say the book and I agree to some extent, the composition and the set are absolutely stunning, Jesus fuckin christ. Whoever skip this cos they hear people saying the book not good will regret 100%

I saw it in October and thought it needed a lot of work. Some of my perspective may have been that regional theaters usually lack the type of energy and production value of broadway. I found the majority of songs to be unmemorable. The performances were good and eva and jj had great chemistry. I think the role is perfect for eva. I liked jj's gatsby better in the second act. I thought the music could've been more consistent in a jazz style. I hope this gets a cast recording so I can compare the Broadway updates to pre-broadway. I'm excited for jj and hope it's successful.

The Met commissioned an opera of Gatsby. Saw it the week it opened. Not one of my most memorable nights at that house. I think the Broadway is too big for this to make a profit.

this might be controversial, but I just saw this on broadway last week, and it was the worst thing I've ever seen. the cast was stunning, the costumes were stunning, the sets were stunning-- but the book, oh god, it was so bad. i'm so confused by so much of the adaptation. they changed so many parts of the story unnecessarily... nick and gatsby barely interacted! the story doesn't make sense that way! i felt zero emotion towards any of the characters, and other than maybe two songs, the songs were not good?? i really have never seen a musical that i thought was terrible until i saw this one. but thank you for your thoughts, i always enjoy hearing your perspective, and it does seem like they made some changes (probably for the better, though, yikes, if it's still like this....) after the run you saw.

Dont have much interest for this adaptation. Waaaaay more interested in the show Florence Welch is writing the lyrics for. I just am unsure where that show is in its journey to the stage at the moment.
