Hi Tom, had a situation like yours where someone showed up to a field I had been walking. I used to feel territorial when It came to hunting artifacts, until that one day. I ended up walking with this guy and sharing conversation about our shared hobby of hunting artifacts. Long story short, we ended up becoming best friends and after a few seasons, sharing other sites with each other. I think Jim and I were meant to meet that day and the great spirit had brought us together.

Love that Celt! Also love seeing the flint. We don’t find that here unless it’s trade material which isn’t very often.
I got Lyme’s disease last year. Made me very sick. Ever since I keep a daily check. As far as the intruder, I guess my biggest concern would be whether he had permission or not to hunt there. If he does then yes he should have the respect to wait. This is coming from a very territorial person though so keep that in mind! Lol

Treasure Hunter I’m fortunate to be in the vicinity of the Coshocton Flint source. Maybe a 3-4 day walk for the ancient people. Flint Ridge is another days walk. I hear Lyme disease is no fun. It makes me way more aware and careful.

We live on a small farm facing paint Creek State Park in Southern Ohio and have a nice collection of Indian artifacts. We lived on our farm well over 30 years and I recently found a well-preserved campfire. I was pretty excited about this. Thanks for your video.

I watch your video again my friend..Wow dude that board, the hammer, the dots, that black scraper with work on both edges, they're great. Where we search it is very difficult for other people to arrive, no one goes there because of the difficulty of the road. There are places on the side of the roads where we have found footprints, accumulations of flagstones, accumulated metate hands, etc. where other people have been there but never at the same time as us. I think that whoever arrives first has priority and it is better if they already have permission. Let's go with god friend.

Tom, Great day out I the field. That celt is very cool. all the artifacts you picked up are nice. I always love the flake tools. I know what you are saying about other hunters. I have 2 or 3 other people that hunt the big sandy. I have to agree if you are there first then they should wait until you are done. I have not had a tick on me in years but I had one once embedded in my leg and my grandmother painted it in nail polish and it backed right out. It could not breath. So a little trick from the past to help you in the future. Take care and good luck on your future hunts my friend!

I was bowhunting about 20 years ago I was in my stand. Another Hunter came along and set his stand-up 50yards down the deer trail from me I went back to the cabin got my boombox and let her rip he left and I never had to say a cross word to him nor did I ever see him again

See why you like that spot. I've found many of those slate/greenstone celts over the years. I hunted by myself for over 10 years, then found a buddy to hunt with for 20 years, shared our spots and had a lot of fun. He passed on and now hunting alone again. Fields I've looked in for many years, I've seen others in recently. Even if they got there first, I'm still gonna look too.

Nice finds Tom. Congrats on the Celt. I don’t think I could ever jump in a field that somebody else is already in, but if they have permission there’s not much you can do I guess. Good luck!!

Got a pretty cool Celt there a little beat up but a finds a find there all cool in my book. Love the hard stone tools. Some people these days lack common sense or have lack of respect for others.theres artifacts out there to find just put it all behind you and move forward to accomplish what you've set out to do. Good luck on your adventures.

Some nice finds Tom that field would make me excited to hunt also .I use alot of bug repellent ticks are bad this year.there some other ways to get ticks off .cotton ball with cinnamon oil will make them back out pretty quick no pulling thanks for taking us along

Good finds Tom ! A lot of our slate celts down this way look about the same...I guess it's a matter of what it takes to do the job and the material. As far as someone else invading a field that you're in ...I've had others come into a spot I was looking and if they have permission, theres not much you can say or do. I reckon it depends on the individual, but I always walk over and introduce myself...ask if they have permission after a little conversation and usually have a pleasant experience and sometimes make a new friend. I personally wouldn't, but not evreyones the same.....GL2Ya Buddy !

I would say your fine to think that way. It's like morel hunting . You don't go right up next to someone picking morels and start picking right next to them. But that's not what I would do . And don't think you would either.

You wouldn't believe the ticks in Missouri.
    Nice Lance base.
I rarely see other hunters and I have to introduce myself and invite them to our meetings if they're close enough and I would still walk a field if I drove a long way to get there and somebody was in it

I found a hammerstone nearly identical to that one on Dec. 3, 2021. Thing is, it is too nice for a hammerstone. Maybe it was some sort of healing stone and possibly heated. It is extremely heavy for it's size. Maybe it was a meditation stone, who knows. It has the semi-flat bottom and is three fingers wide. It also is more oval shaped than circular as yours. I plan on making a video after the snow comes. Still hunting until then.

I just took a look at your video. They are very much alike. I’m guessing small hammerstone. Yours has a more pronounced indentation where mine shows more pecking. I’m guessing they used the flat surface of yours for hammering or crushing and grinding. Nice find.

Use alcohol on the tick before removing. It causes them to let go and then you can pull them out without leaving their head in your skin. Tiny, tiny deer ticks usually cause Lyme disease and they are very difficult to see. If you have a red bullseye on you, in the center is the deer tick. These are most difficult to remove but use the alcohol and they will release also. Just have some paper towel to catch it so you can see it to kill it. Very nice finds, by the way. 😊

I happen to agree, if some one else is in the field I would not stop. Unless I knew I was the only one with permission for the field. I always ask the owner if any one else has permission. But claim jumpers I have heard assume that everyone else is hunting without permission.

Mike. I collected most of those back in the 70s. When I made the man cave it seemed like a good way to cover one of the walls. I really don’t have much room but send me a picture of your cans and I’ll let you know. Commissionertom@gmail.com.

Yeah,,I hear you loud and clear. Its a respectful thing,or as it has become,a matter of disrespect.I view it the same way.Its not always been that way,but times aren't what they once were.Sad thing is,I myself have resorted to doing the same thing on some of my fields.I know they'd come in on me,so I hesitate not to pile right up in there. It becomes something different than a relaxing stroll when there's other feet on the same ground.I come to expect this type of behavior especially at osg,,but I've never accepted it or liked it.

    • @commissionertom
      @commissionertom  6 ปีที่แล้ว

FlintSpall I thought of you right away. It may have as much to do with not wanting to visit while I hunt than not sharing the finds. It takes some effort and sacrifice to keep an eye on your sites and be the first person in the field. If you get there first I’ll try harder next year. Thanks for your thoughts.

Heh heh ..... not really funny Tom, but I've had people not only jump in a small field that two of us were hunting. Had one individual decide he was going to hunt in the row next to me after he had come over to see how I was doing, and even had the audacity to jump in "my" row and poach a point not four feet in front of me while I was bent over picking up a point. Stuck that point right in his pocket without so much as a flinch ...... how's that for civility! Anyhoo .... nice slate celt, and yes. it's all about context with those hammerstones some times. Best of luck. Going out to check some field conditions right now .... not hunting ... just checking ..... it's raining like the dickens here in PA ...... again.
