If you get a high reading, don't transmit for long.
I like how this gentleman has done a good job at showing how to use an SWR meter.
Ideally you want the lowest SWR at the centre of your band which is around channel 18 or 19 and then it increases in a curve going up and down in channels.
If you mostly use the higher channels,
then find the best SWR around channel 30 for example.
If you use a linear amplifier it is even more important to make sure your SWR is low.

@crazyham I'd find where the antenna is resonant or adjust the antenna to be resonant at the frequency of use ,this is not necessarily at the lowest swr

@@Pioneer936 It's not going to be far off though.

@crazyham depends a resonant folded dipole is around 300ohms a 6.1 swr without any matching network, most verticals without a matching network are miles off ,a resonant end fed half wave is several thousand ohms, then I would match it to the radio, non of this would include an swr meter ,they only measure a mismatch not efficiency or resonance

@@Pioneer936 I was assuming that most CB'ers are using things like a station master etc.
Of course a high impedance antenna needs a matching network.
      Great info though
      & thanks for your comments.🙏

@crazyham think swr meters are used for the wrong purpose, as I've described they not really any good for tuning an antenna, a 1.1 swr reading could be misinterpreted as 100% efficient antenna system when it can be the total opposite

I been wanting to get myself a New Model, i have one thats over 20 years old and i am sure its not up to par. Your video persuaded me to place an order .. Thanks...and Welcome to the USA.

Thank you man you should have said to post in the comments what I see is you need is to place a metal on the table and the SWR will go down. Great Vlog. Keep them coming Amen

Thanks I'm doing this right now out on yard first-time since 1979 1980 base set up.. I'm trying to set swr I have the Siro 27 gp 5/8 and Realistic TRC -419 but will get a ssb I hope soon

Put out a counterpoise earth of about 9 feet of wire.
Good, no nonsense about 3' jumper leads or trimming coax down inch by inch to the aerial.

get a double bazooka wire ant. on ebay mount in an A position. works better on balcony than a mag mount.

Thanks! Will look into it. But I think I finally solved the problem. I received the Firestik IBA-5 base station, and after some adjustments, I got down the swr to 1.8/1.2/1.2
I'm out of town. When I get back, I'll make some fine tuning and will upload a short video. Thanks again!

Why is it a must to have when swr or reflected power is not the cause of radio damage, wouldn't it be better to get an analyser to read the impedance that actually is the cause of damage

      No. Those are more expensive

    • @crazyham
      @crazyham 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

I don't think it would be accurate for the 40m band
But if you want good test gear at low cost for many bands,
      get yourself a nano vna
which can check your swr on a broad range of bands
and has many more features if you develop your interest in radio.
They are very cheap considering what they can do
but U can't use it inline when using your radio.
