  • A key part of your fishing kayak trolling motor setup should be the installation of a kayak trolling motor kill switch to keep the boat from escaping if you fall overboard. Here is my take on a trolling motor kill switch that is simple and inexpensive. Give this kayak kill switch a try and see if it works for your kayak trolling motor install.

Cool idea!!! Love the part about boiling the trimmer line a spool to give it a "perm." I read the comment about the carabiner and pfd. I think that's a pretty good idea, but since we frequently fish in

Nice job. Great idea. One situation you might consider, if the fuse pops it would likely melt the fishing line teather. That said, if the fuse pops the motor would stop so same result. One option I have considered in leau of a kill switch would be a SUP leash, cheap and easy.

You can purchase a factory made kill switch with lanyard on Amazon or ebay for $12-$15. Mount the switch directly to the same box you install the PWM connecting it between your power in cable and the power in lug on the PWM and you are done. Also ... attaching the lanyard to your wrist can be an extreme safety hazard. Simply use a snap hook to attach it to the D-ring on your PFD (This is what it was designed for) just like the big boat operators. Make sure your PWM box is mounted solidly in the kayak and you should never have any problems if you become separated from your kayak.

Great points. The only thing I would add is to make sure anything you buy commercially has specs that match your motor - specifically, that the wire is the same gauge as your motor.

Great idea. I would recommend making the coil line long enough to connect directly to your pfd with a carabiner. I think on your wrist could be annoying and get in the way of fishing.

Thanks for this brilliant idea. My single rider skiff is on order and have a laundry list of projects when it gets here. A kill switch is 1 of them and it has caused many sleepless nights thinking of being left in the water by my skiff. The kill switch in the market is made to have continuity not break.

I opted to wire in a Sure Foot Trolling Motor Foot Control Switch in place of a kill switch. Just as you wired your switch in, I have the foot control wire spliced in and then run under my seat and then secured with velcro to a comfortable position on the deck to press it easily with my foot to engage the motor. It works very well sitting and even better when standing. The motor will not engage unless I have pressed the foot control so I can start and stop the motor at will and leave it at a preferred speed. Cost for switch was $29.00.

I know this is an older video, which by the way is very informative. My question is the newer inline fuses have a Maxie fuse and it looks like their might not be enough room to drill a hole for the line. It says not for regular fuses, any work around idea for this issue?

Awesome tip. Can't thank you enough. Getting ready to register my soon-to-be-powered Kayak in Louisiana (which is required for any form of powered boat) and have be wrestling with the USCG requirement for a kill switch. Would really like to see your motor and battery set up. Also, any suggestions for a small Type B fire extinguisher. Yes, another requirement. Appreciate your advice.
