  • Jeffrey of JTEC MOTO in Los Angeles, California shows us his latest build, a custom 1983 Yamaha Virago XV920 cafe racer. Upgrades include a complete 2008 Yamaha R1 front end and R6 rear mono shock and swing arm. The bike's tank is from a 1980's Kawasaki KZ 650 with a Yamaha R6 gas cap.

Wow, VERY nice virago build! Virago cafes are the best looking cafes, IMO.
I'd love more details on how that rear subframe was done, it looks OEM and very nice. Curious how those bends were done, doesn't look mandrel. Either way it's a very nice piece.

Pretty sure a virago was shaft drive?? I was waiting to see how you converted to chain.

This bike is not a Virago, it is an XV-920, a chain driven European only model.
Had Yamaha imported more of these to the States they might have sold more of them. They are longer, ride much better, and have plenty of room to move around. The Virago models were cramped, at least I felt that way riding one. Especially the 750 models
Look at the left side of this motor where the chain returns to the drive sprocket, that big black rectangular flange is where the big clunky looking chain case bolts to the transmission side. You'll find a similar rectangular opening below. Imported to the US when the Euro market could not sell them all. I think there only 2 years that this came to the USA. I owned an 83 XV-920.
Many guys swore I had a Virago, but the encased chain drive always stumped them. "Never saw a Virago with chain drive before." Well, you still didn't see one because this bike is not a Virago!
FWIW the 3 or so years I owned that bike I never had to adjust the drive chain. The fact that the chain was encased and lubed with heavy grease made it easy to maintain, as in no work required!
So, no, this is not a Virago, it's a pretty rare bike in the USA. Never did see another one on the road before, or since owning it. It had a very wide long seat and was much more comfy than a Virago. Plenty of room to stretch out on long rides.

Why does this bike sound more higher pitched than the xv750s that JTEC Moto made? I like the low rumble of the 750s. I figured more CC's would make it sound lower also.

I feel like with this monster wind is your biggest fight, id put a bigger tail hump so your ass doesnt slip off from all the torque and wind pushing against you and a headlight fender so you can duck when you want to go on speed runs and be streamlined with the bike :p but hey thats just me hahaha
