Valerie Armstrong Yes. I read they didn't like the way he played a cop in a skit. He made the cop fabulous and the power to be didn't like it.
He went off stript live- making a straight character gay, not running by the supervisors. It was his first year and it wasn't his skit. SNL has a rule about everything. He didn't even play the character that gay, by today's standards anyway. If you watch the skit it's kind of strange the cop is gay without any funny lines pertaining to it but genius comedians don't need snl anyway
ILC allowed improved bits all the time. The network was cool with it. The anal retentive NBC execs had their nose up all in SNL and they exerted influence they never should have had. These actors come straight out of improv. They should be allowed to and expected to improvise. But try telling that to some pr!cos high up in the network.

i just saw an Anton Jackson skit on In Living Color. To see this HILARIOUS character in it’s original skit and to see the other actors deadpan around him, shows that Damon was TOO good for this shit.
To be fair, SNL was in a slump in season 20 and In Living Color was starting to suffer after the Wayans siblings left.

SNL back in season 11 (which was when Damon Wayans was on) didn't really know how to write comedy for the cast members they had (with the exception of Jon Lovitz, Nora Dunn, Dennis Miller, and maybe Terry Sweeney [even though he left at the end of that season]), and that, sadly included the two black cast members they had (Damon Wayans and a black female comedian named Danitra Vance).
Probably the best Jay Mohr performance I've ever seen.

This just goes to show you how Shady Saturday Night Live really is they fired Damon Wayans they said that he improvised lines too much and they didn't think any of his ideas were funny... then after he went to In Living Color and became super successful they had to beg him to come back to do one character for there dying show... SNL hasn't been funny since the early 90s
To be fair, the entire 85 cast was fired except for Jon Lovitz. NBC almost cancelled the show that year.
