- The first of the year I was lucky to experience a very rare ceremony called Junihitoe or "the twelve layers robe" in Achi-jinja in Kurashiki. The ceremony is quite slow and beautiful to the eyes of everyone.

No problem. The Heian period is my favourite time in Japanese history simply because it was the Golden Age of traditional Japanese culture and aesthetic, so I've read a lot about it. I definitely wouldn't want to live during that period, but if I did I sure wouldn't mind being a noble... of the Fujiwara clan of course.

Often times the noble ladies would wear the same Junihitoe for days, it acted as both morning attire and as a pyjama. If it got cold, they would simply add on more layers and if it got warm or hot they simply took off layers, all of this done with the co-ordination of the colours and patterns. They sad servants with them at all times to help them in this. Certain types of junihitoe were worn for different occasions as well, and the higher rank, the more layers you could wear (more than 12).

For the bathroom, there was no such thing as a bathroom in the Heian period. Essentially, each living quarters of a noble lady would contain special sections with large sand boxes, which are hidden with a cover on the floor, and if it was used they would uncover the box and pull it up floor-level. They would release their bodily fluids and fecal matter on this box, cover it with sand, and then place the box down and cover it with the lid. Servants dumped the fluids and matter on the Kamo River.

There isn't any records of how they used the sandbox contraption exactly with their Junihitoe on, but I would assume they simply took off their clothes, used the sandbox, and placed their clothes back on, all with the help of servants of course. It sounds like a hassle but remember for the most part the Junihitoe worn for everyday use was quite informal and loose, thus the robes and pants were easy to slip on and off.

@@Mikotoliw ไม่ใช่พิธีอะไรทั้งนั้นค่ะ แค่แต่งโชว์ในศาลเจ้าเองแหละ คือ การใส่ชุดนี้มันไม่ใช่ชุดในพิธี แต่ชุดกิโมโน 12 ชั้น หรือ จูนิฮิโตเอะ หรือ ชื่อเต็ม ๆ อิซึสึกินุโมะ คาระงินุโมะ (ชุด 5 ชั้น เสื้อคลุมจีน) คนสมัยพันปีก่อนชนชั้นสูงในวังเขาแต่งกันปรกติ ปัจจุบันก็ แต่งแค่ในงานสำคัญงานทางพิธีศาสนาทั่วไปเฉย ๆ แค่โชว์ขั้นตอนการสวมชุดอ่ะค่ะ
