Wax it, then just clean with a kettle of hot water.
I been wondering how to clean it for a very long time! Thank u! The first chain (my last chain) I just did silca drip wax till the chain was worn. Buy now I did the hot dip and wondered how to remove
Then occasionally use Screwfix bio degreaser in an ultrasonic cleaner.

"Environmental precautions Keep away from drains, surface and ground water. Retain contaminated washing water and dispose of it. If substance has entered a water course or sewer, inform the responsible authority."
"Waste treatment methods Sewage disposal-relevant information
Do not empty into drains. Avoid release to the environment."
yeah i was pretty alarmed seeing the chain stripper going down the drain!
Wtf
Thought of that too, not a great tip at all to dispose of it into a drain like that...
It's for cleaning the grease of a new chain before waxing and not for cleaning dirty chains. To clean a waxed chain just use boiling water to take off the wax & dirt before rewaxing
It can do used chains, Silva even say this in their own videos. But it is particularly good for new chains and removing factory grease
Wax every 300km less hassle and clean hands/bike plus longer component life.
How often are you re using the quick link?
You didn't find that product, you make money from it 😂
I feel like you can do the same exact thing but with 99% isopropyl alcohol, bought in bulk from Amazon. It’s possibly the best degreaser you can use as it also dries insanely fast. The only thing I do differently is I dip it back into iso after rinsing the chain thoroughly with water to displace the water so that it air dries super fast. For me it then goes straight into wax, or goes on the bike with lube or wax. If I touch the chain with bare hands I will usually wipe the whole chain again with iso on a micro fiber to remove hand oils before using a drip on wax or another lube. 🤙
A pair of gloves and Thinner cleans everything for cheap.
I use Holts brake cleaner. Comes out sparkling. Cheap, too.
Paint thinner, petrol, white spirit etc - all of those work fantastically in an old water bottle or drink shaker. You don't even need a 100% concentration; I do about 1:2 with soapy water and it never fails to get the chain fully degreased.
Problem with these other chemicals/liquids is that they are a pain to dispose of and cannot/should not be tipped down the drain.
This means proper disposal or storage
Blimey what a palava. I leave my chain on the bike and just use the Muc Off degreaser on chain and cassette, let it soak in few a few mins, brush the crap off, hose it off and it’s clean as a whistle.
I have cleaned really dirty chains by ,first soak in your preferred solvent, then pin the chain on a plank at each end and hit it with high pressure washer
did the same with an absolutely filthy rear dr,worked a treat
Nice cleaning job. But honestly, consider going to wax. Whole drivetrain stays clean for much longer. Converted to wax 2 ys. ago. Never looked back. Do 3 chains at a time, always spare clean ones in stock.
That’s a rad bike David. Does it ride as nice as it looks?
Second!
I just leave the garlic & dill sauerkraut in the container while cleaning. It can strip off the grease and dirt on its own and my chain smells like a deli afterwards.
Or you could spray it with gt85 & run it through a rag in 30 seconds 😂
I use 100% raw bee honey for lube. Its environmentally safe and if it gets on your hands you can just lick it off. Make sure to use ACV when cleaning.
Screwfix degreaser. 5 litres for about £20
Can you filter the filthy degreaser with coffee filter? I wanna know how clean it could be
Thanks David!
Could’ve used a little more Chain Stripper during the clean mate. Not nearly enough in there to encapsulate all that old lube and grim from that dirty chain.
Odorless mineral spirits (that's the American name) in a jar works amazingly well. A gallon costs close to nothing. I filter the used stuff and use it again until it's just too black. I've been using the same gallon for over ten years. I just rub the chain with a little Dawn (dish washing liquid) and rinse it off afterwards in hot water. Five minute job and the chain will be sparkling clean.
Was this chain previously waxed or was it an oil-based lube?
I clean 4-5 chains a day. Purple power degreaser is just as good at a fraction of the price. Soak 4 hours rag clean then soak in hot water. Rag clean again
I bought a ultrasonic cleaner, 50c warm water & dishwasher detergent 30min in done !
I prefer to use the Park Cyclone CM-25 chain cleaner tool (the metal pro version) with degreaser and just leave the chain on the bike while I’m cleaning everything else. Dry with my air compressor.
Ultrasonic machine and simple green purple … 20 min and chain is very clean… just have to rinse- simple green purple is environmentally friendly cleaner too
Paint thinner/mineral spirits. Cheap, reusable, with same results. Been using it for years.
Filthy, manky chain??!! Looks pretty clean to me, another video where a pretty clean chain is made slightly cleaner.
My thoughts, exactly! 😊
I've tested several chain lubricants this year, but in the end I came back to the reliable Shimano PTFE Lube anyway.
I don't think that is sold anymore. In fact, I think Shimano doesn't sell any chain lube products anymore. I think the previous Shimano chain lube products were in fact made by swiss chemical manufacturer Motorex, who sell a line of bike cleaning and lube products.
Like some of the re use tips 🙂👍
What a pain in the arse to do every week.
Method has been used by other people before, the difference is other type of solution being used. I thought u have a 'simple' way of cleaning the chain.
I'm terrified to get any chain muc oil on my brakes when washing it
You can just use some alcohol to clean the brakes after.
Just buy lighter gasoline from somewhere, it works perfect, is cheap (1L) and it won’t damage clothing or frames or paintjob or electric. 😅
I love seeing a greaser use a wax product.
Quick link is more expensive in this process.
Ultrasonic cleaner best for me
Just use wax
favourite lube is homemade wax. use candle melt in a slow cooker add 50g of 1.6 micron ptfe powder.
Brillo pad! = Scratch. Please use an alternative.
don't worry wasn't using the Brillo pad side on the frame
Parafin as cheap and works as well as this.
I just either add more wax (Squirt) because it’s self cleaning or spray with simple green and let it sit. Works fine.
Paint brush cleaner in b&q costs £3 and does wonderful job
Does this mean Silca are a new paying sponsor for you as this product has been around for a few years now and the majority of people that wax their chains have been using this product to clean factory chains for years now.
Wheels out, chain off, rinse, car shampoo, rinse, dry off with a microfibres
I wax my chains even the MTB which has worked really well for me
David, you’re taking leaves out of Durianrider’s book 😂 He cleans his chains in turps and uses Squirt Lube too 👍
Ain't nothing quick and simple about that method. Waxed chain just needs boiling water.
Clean chain cleaned again.
