I was born in 1998 but have recently started going through these old monster movies. They're absolutely amazing and I'm enjoying every minute of it. So far, 20 million miles to earth is my favorite

Good. Glad to hear that someone born years after these classics were regularly broadcast on tv ('50, '60s, '70s and early '80s), is discovering them for the first time and keeping them 'alive' and well. Pass the word around... There are hundreds of gems that you will discover on the journey - enjoy!!

The godzilla suit was over 200 pounds. Imagine being in a "rubber suit" which had the texture of concrete underneath spotlights, in fire, and under fire. The dude playing godzilla would lose atleast 20 pounds by the end of each film. Truly dedicated and dangerous work yet people dismiss it as silly

Godzilla was more than just any old giant monster movie, it was an allegory about the dangers of atomic weaponry. As Dr. Yamane said I the final scene in Gojira, "If nuclear testing continues, then someday, somewhere in the world... another Godzilla may appear"

You're welcome, B.B. Check out one of my other videos: Those! The Ultimate Giant Monster Movie Mash. I made it myself because I too am a huge fan of the genre. I am 63 and remember watching the same movies, I have a greater fondness for the monsters of the 50's - 60's because of the greater acting and plot used and the special effects. CGI are not my favorite since they aren't made by people.

Agreed. It's fairly easy to put somebody in a costume & have him stomp around a miniature set, as in the Japanese movies. It actually requires a lot of effort to do what Harryhausen did, painting images onto each frame of film.

Harryhausen used stop-motion animation, which is slowly and carefully moving the flexible models a fraction of an inch and photographing it - 24 frames per second is approximate to a lifelike movement. Of course, he also utilized split-screen techniques, matte backgrounds, etc.

I remember watching this way back in the early 2000's on AMC and I had recorded it on a VHS tape. I vaguely remember watching this but had forgotten what the title was, I just came across this on a facebook page and saw the thumbnail of Gorgo which caught my attention.
It brings back a lot of wonderful memories for me as I remember coming home after middle school to watch the Three stooges and watching classic Sci-Fi and Horror movies on AMC such as THEM!, Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Ghost of Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, House of Frankenstein etc.

I loved the Giant Monster genre, no matter the type of monster (atomic, genetically enhanced, alien-from-another-world, etc.,) or SFX that created it (Stop Motion, Suitmation, CGI) it was all great and fueled my imagination for many years. We need Bill Mumy to do another Giant Monster documentary with the current crop of Giant Monster flicks.

    And they said it was,
    MARY POPPINS
that first incorporated animation and real people.
WALLACE BEERY was in the first movie
    THE LOST WORLD.
    It's a GREAT MOVIE
    and on TH-cam
    The original
KING KONG, I have on VHS. VHS ROCKS!
Almost every movie made and known to man was made on VHS. VHS lasts,
unlike CDs or DVDs - if they go unused, they can skip, distort. Not so with VHS, and Cassettes. Just don't keep film or music "tapes", in the sun!

Technically, they don't match up to the current computer generated monsters, if fact they may seem silly. But they have a charm and I like the idea of technicians having to create those tiny little cities for them to trash. It was an art.

To gloomer, at :20 , that is Gorgo ( the parent) coming after their offspring, who had been captured and was on display in an exposition arena in London. Once he was rescued, both of them headed out of Londonand back to the sea.

Ha when it comes to monsters Irwin Allen ain't got nothing on Eiji Tauburaya. Actually Japan never stopped making giant monster movies, at least until the post Godzilla: Final Wars break. Even then Japanese TV has been doing giant monsters almost non stop since the mid 1960s.

A lot of these movies were good fun (even the uber-cheesy ones...), and I recently saw "Attack of the 50 foot woman"'s remake. It sticks to it's B-movie roots, with a heaping helping of cheese. And the homage/parody from Roger Corman "Attack of the 50 foot cheerleader." I will admit....that movie is okay.

Big Sigh!!! I can remember these old classic monster movies still being shown on Saturdays and Sundays up through the early 1990's.
Nowadays, I can only find free classic movies on Bing.com videos.
It's been fun watching this history of movie monsters.

Cool special, I just watched it again. Granted, an hour can't showcase all the best giant monsters, but no Kraken (1981's Clash of the Titans)? It's like they skipped the 80's ... with just a mention of Star Wars (Return of the Jedi had an awesome mammoth monster whom Luke kills, if you fantasy fans like me will remember).

    • @austintrousdale2397
      @austintrousdale2397 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Eduardo Corrochio Some people consider Clash of the Titans inferior to much of Harryhausen’s previous work... here’s what I know: I watched it on the big screen right after it was released and sitting there in the theater, suddenly it was 1962, if not 400 B.C.
