@@juang.3191 Not that it's grammaticaly correct (Would not pass the exams), but we say a lot of weird things, most of our ancestors worked for english-speaking factory owners, and have carried some of that vocabulary with them. ex: My grand-mother who said Ti-pot (Tea pot) all her life without knowing it came from english.

I've understood everything. I've been learning French for a year, but since the beginning I started to watch French movies, TH-cam videos every day for at least an hour. (At first just for pleasure to listen to French). First I watch them with my native language subtitles then rewatch them with French subtitles. Theres is no other way to learn to understand spoken French and get used it.
@@radisrose you have the choice between English and French subtitles. If you can read French, I would recommend French subtitles so you don’t translate English to French in your head. Try to memorize the words, press “pause” if necessary. This is a very difficult series to watch and understand because they speak fast. There are another movies to consider if you want to learn or get better a the French language. TH-cam has hundred of French movies and tv series. Good luck, a French friend.

Don't worry. My British partner sometimes puts the subs on when we watch UK shows set in northern England :) it took me a couple of years to be able to watch most British TV with no subs even though I had a masters in English when I moved here. Nothing prepares you for the accents and the slang.
Watch old French movies and you will make some significant progress. In older movies, the actors spoke slower and with pause. It will be easier for you to understand and get familiar with French conversation. You will pick up the language and familiar phrases that come up in more recent movies. Your ear will then register the phrase even when it is spoken faster. Bonne chance. Une française aux US.

I think it's no more difficult than English would be for a non native speaker, trying to understand words like "gonna" ( going to), "wanna" (want to) or "dunno" (don't know) I have lived in France and within a very short time I was also dropping the "ne" as it felt quite silly saying it when no-one else did. They should teach this stuff in school, as long as they make it clear that it's not to be used in written French for exams etc.

As someone who has learned both English and French as a non-native, French is still quite harder than English in regards to this. I agree English is a very irregular language, but once you learn what gonna, wanna, dunno, ima, etc. mean, they become very easy to spot and use. But with French, even if you have learned all these kinds of "tricks" that the spoken language has, it's still hard to spot them. It takes an actual effort to hear them and even use them. I think every language has these kinds of things and I really enjoy learning them as it steps away from the very formal language.

Dear Géraldine, I love france, and always have my vacation there in different regions. I really try hard to learn french. I hear speakers that speak slowly and clearly in online courses, or in the news. And year after year I get more frustrated, because in france nobody speaks the way I learn french. So now I think there is something fundamentally wrong in the "official" way to learn french. I can read it quite well (silently by myself) and get the meaning - but I am not able to have a fluent conversation. My first language is german (I live in the southwest, 45 Minutes by car from the french border) I learned English quite well and working as as journalist I am able to do interviews in english. But spoken french just drives me crazy.
Oh, don't worry... you know German is very difficult for us french people too ! I have a friend who lives in Germany since 2013 if I'm not wrong, she even had a full year of German classes in the beginning,... and she still struggles to understand people or express what she wants ;)
Sometimes I forget that I’m bilingual 😩 but I love these videos! So fun and always great to improve especially as I don’t live in a French speaking country
Love this type of video! I think the hardest French I've ever heard was the Netflix move "the misadventures of Hedi and cokeman" it's hilarious but the French is on another level.
This is SO helpful!! Thank you so much. I find extremely fast, colloquial speech is the Achilles heel of my French comprehension. I also love this series, even though I sometimes have difficulty understanding haha. This was really useful for me. I hope to see more videos like this in the future!
There is a good app to practice with natives, Tandem (maybe you already know it), it's usefull because you can write and speak in colloquial style, and I guess that it makes a huge difference with formal french (at least that's what a lot of french-learners on Tandem told me ahah)

"J'en veux plus" means "I want more", that is when you hear the "S" in "plus". As far as reading it is concerned, it may also mean either "I want more" or its opposite; "I don't want anymore of it", "Je N'en veux plus" in a written version of colloquial French. Tricky.

Et puis, dans le cas présent, c'est à l'écrit que se pose le problème et les traducteurs en ligne ne peuvent rien pour vous.
I'd love to take a supplementary class where they break down real spoken language through scenes from movies and TV shows just like this. Short of straight up immersion, this seems more useful than just classroom/textbook learning.

Of all the characters on this show, Arlette is the most difficult to understand, and I cannot figure out why. Her pronunciation is so relaxed that she tends to mumble words, I think...
To be honest, even as a French person, it can be hard to understand Arlette. Most of the time, I had no clue what she was saying because of the mumbling.

@@amels4101 J'avais aussi ça en tête comédien = théâtre mais je suis allée voir la définition pour en être sûre et c'est plutôt flou. En gros un comédien est un acteur qui joue dans des comédies, un dramaturge dans des drames mais en gros ce sont tous des acteurs que ce soit au théâtre ou au cinéma. Je me trompe peut-être mais j'ai l'impression que le sens du mot à évolué avec le temps.

I wonder if non native English speakers feel the same way about us in everyday informal spoken language. As an American, I would argue that American English is a unique dialect with a lot of slang and informal words. It could be because we are a more relaxed culture.

You are absolutely correct. The key is the "s" and it depends on the context.

I learn english and dutch ( my natal language is french). And i ve never noticed that we write the same phrase to say "more" and "i dont want more". 😅

Dear Géraldine, I love france, and always have my vacation there in different regions. I really try hard to learn french. I hear speakers that speak slowly and clearly in online courses, or in the news. And year after year I get more frustrated, because in france nobody speaks the way I learn french. So now I think there is something fundamentally wrong in the "official" way to learn french. I can read it quite well (silently by myself) and get the meaning - but I am not able to have a fluent conversation. My first language is german (I live in the southwest, 45 Minutes by car from the french border) I learned English quite well and working as as journalist I am able to do interviews in english. But spoken french just drives me crazy.
Oh, don't worry... you know German is very difficult for us french people too ! I have a friend who lives in Germany since 2013 if I'm not wrong, she even had a full year of German classes in the beginning,... and she still struggles to understand people or express what she wants ;)
Sometimes I forget that I’m bilingual 😩 but I love these videos! So fun and always great to improve especially as I don’t live in a French speaking country
This series I enjoyed a lot! The expressions and humor are typically French and of course I would not have captured 100% words.
Love this type of video! I think the hardest French I've ever heard was the Netflix move "the misadventures of Hedi and cokeman" it's hilarious but the French is on another level.

This is SO helpful!! Thank you so much. I find extremely fast, colloquial speech is the Achilles heel of my French comprehension. I also love this series, even though I sometimes have difficulty understanding haha. This was really useful for me. I hope to see more videos like this in the future!
There is a good app to practice with natives, Tandem (maybe you already know it), it's usefull because you can write and speak in colloquial style, and I guess that it makes a huge difference with formal french (at least that's what a lot of french-learners on Tandem told me ahah)

"J'en veux plus" means "I want more", that is when you hear the "S" in "plus". As far as reading it is concerned, it may also mean either "I want more" or its opposite; "I don't want anymore of it", "Je N'en veux plus" in a written version of colloquial French. Tricky.
@Magali GIL Malheureusement l'idéal n'existe pas. Vous ne pouvez décider de ce que vous dira votre interlocuteur.trice. Si elle/il dit "J'en veux pluS" il vous faut bien le comprendre. Et puis, dans le cas présent, c'est à l'écrit que se pose le problème et les traducteurs en ligne ne peuvent rien pour vous.
I'd love to take a supplementary class where they break down real spoken language through scenes from movies and TV shows just like this. Short of straight up immersion, this seems more useful than just classroom/textbook learning.

This is a noble undertaking!! I would have a long way to go to feel confident understanding whole phrases as they fly by at lightning speed, much less phrases with cut off and abbreviated words. (Camille's expression at the end said a lot too.)

These are the following reasons for me my understanding spoken french is hell
1. They spoke very fast
2. Most of the words just sounds the same to each other
3. Dropping off of the syllables

Of all the characters on this show, Arlette is the most difficult to understand, and I cannot figure out why. Her pronunciation is so relaxed that she tends to mumble words, I think...

To be honest, even as a French person, it can be hard to understand Arlette. Most of the time, I had no clue what she was saying because of the mumbling.

No, the simple truth is that spoken french is nothing like formal or literary language we learn in school. I am only a beginner in german and still understand more than french in listening. Reading is another story, have to admit!👍

Acteur ou comédien veulent dire la même chose. Autrefois un comédien était un acteur "spécialisé" dans les comédies, les pièces de théâtre amusantes.

@@amels4101 J'avais aussi ça en tête comédien = théâtre mais je suis allée voir la définition pour en être sûre et c'est plutôt flou. En gros un comédien est un acteur qui joue dans des comédies, un dramaturge dans des drames mais en gros ce sont tous des acteurs que ce soit au théâtre ou au cinéma. Je me trompe peut-être mais j'ai l'impression que le sens du mot à évolué avec le temps.
