  • This episode has been found to be in conformity with the Catechism by the Institute on the Catechism, under the Subcommittee on the Catechism, USCCB.
📖 Follow along with the official Catechism in a Year Reading Plan (AscensionPress...)
God reveals himself to man and gives us the capacity to know and love him beyond our own natural abilities. From the very beginning, even after the first sin of Adam and Eve, God made himself known to human beings and gave us a promise of redemption. Fr. Mike explains how God’s covenant with Noah offers hope for salvation and unity that are only made possible in Christ. Today’s readings are Catechism paragraphs 50-58.
Please note: The Catechism of the Catholic Church contains adult themes that may not be suitable for children - parental discretion is advised.
Ascension is committed to creating media that helps Catholics grow in their faith. Catechism in a Year promises to do just that - that’s why, no matter what, we’re making it. This podcast is free and always will be. But, we have limited resources. With funding from generous supporters like you, we can do even more than simply create the podcast. Would you consider supporting Ascension’s free media? tinyurl.com/2s.... No amount is too small!
Although not tax-deductible, the financial support we receive goes towards the creation of podcasts and videos that help Catholics grow in their faith. If you’d like to learn more about what we do with gifting, go to AscensionPress.... Thank you and God bless you!

    What I've learned:
    1. Previous chapter: We know God from nature and reason. This is a limited understanding. It's knowing about God, the outer world of God. It's one way. It's what we perceive.
This chapter: We know God because God chose to reveal Himself to us. This goes beyond our understanding. It's actually knowing God, the inner world of God. It's two way because God, now reaches out to us to communicate His identity to us. It's what He describes Himself to be. This is not our initiation. This is Divine Revelation.
God revealed Himself through Jesus, His Son and through the Holy Spirit.
    2. Dei Verbum (DV)
Dei = God (similar to Deo, Diety, Theo)
Verbum = Word (similar to verbal, verbatim)
The Second Vatican Council came up with two dogmatic constitutions:
    a) Dei Verbum (which means Word of God)
    b) Lumen Gentium (... we'll hear more of this soon)
    3. DV says that, rephrased, God revealed Himself with the intention to have a relationship with us that will lead into us sharing in His divine nature. Short: He wants us to be like Him. He wants to love us and us to love Him.
    4. God, who is holy, gave us free will so that we will reason through and choose Him. He wants us to know and love Him, beyond our natural capacity, aided by His grace, in a gradual manner, part by part.
    5. This is ultimately done through His Son. Jesus is the link. Jesus became man so that He could link (reconcile) man to God, God to man.
    6. Since it's in a gradual manner, He took it in stages of revelations.
    a. Adam and Eve
    b. Noah
God proved His existence by created realities (earth) and gave Adam and Eve grace and justice to be in an intimate communion with Him. Even after the Fall, God never stopped loving us, promising, to bring salvation and eternal life to those who do good and sought after Him to save them.
The act of promising is better expressed as covenant. He made a convenant with Noah.
    Gen 9:9, 16
9 “Behold, I establish my covenant with you and your descendants after you, ...
16 I will look upon it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature...
    7. Principle of divine economy.
Simply said: What God's tactical plan to win the human race?
Simple answer: One family at a time. For starters: Noah's crib...
By this time, the condition of humanity is already corrupted by sin, riddled with polytheism, idolatry and paganism.
The covenant of Noah remained in force until the Gospel of Jesus Christ arrived. It basically means 'live a righteous live until Jesus comes and safe you.'
    Father,
Your intention for us is good. Your intention is good because you love us. May we not miss this point. Thank You for reaching out to us. Thank You for revealing Your heart and Your identity to us. Keep revealing Your heart and Your identity to us. So, that we can know You and love You as You are. Thank You for loving us as we are. We pray for all to come to know Your love and to be loved by You. Amen.

    • @ScurvyPir8
      @ScurvyPir8 ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks! You helped me understand paragraph 56. But how could the "unity" of the human race have been shattered by sin when there were, as yet, only 2 people?
Paragraph 57: how is the division of nations "cosmic"?
Paragraph 58: does the Church recognize the Noahide laws, which are actually found in the Babylonian Talmud?

Day 7 takeaways: God wants us to know Him so we can love Him and serve Him in this world and so we can live with Him forever in Heaven. God did not abandon us because of our sin. He redeemed humanity from death. He continues to reach out to all people, in all times and in all places. When I taught CCD, I told my students that God does not abandon us when we sin, but rather it is us that leaves Him. God’s love is like the sun and when we sin, it’s like we put up an umbrella and can’t feel His love.

There was a recent article in a Washington newspaper that stated the same thing. It said the new St. Paul was from Duluth. Unfortunately, when I read the comments they were all negative about the church, priests, etc. The only positive comment was from an atheist who had gone through Bible in a year. The comments showed how totally broken the world is. We all must pray very hard for conversions.

@@melindanelson854 it's terrible that we have to put up with all the hate. It seems like we the innocent are open to the temporal punishment for the ones who took part in the gravest of sins. It's as if the millstones were around our necks and we are drowning in the hate. I sent praying hands for Mike Jones' son with brain cancer and some hater Joe Young jumped all over me and the Church. It was really uncalled for. He called the Church a slut. I could have fought back but I just reminded him there are hate crime laws in this country. He sent back, "I hate what God hates," to which I sited 1st John 4:8 "Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love."

I had in the beginning of the lessons mentioned that I had grew up on the Baltimore catechism and that many things we were expected to memorize the one thing that I have never lost was that my job on a daily basis was to know love and serve God that's the part I remember. So during my life when there was times of hardship and I didn't know what to do the seed of this particular statement had been planted in my mind at a very young age that one day at a time one thing at a time was to let God help and my job one day at a time was to know love and serve him and he will take care of the rest. So much of this did not sink in the first time I read this but having you read it and explain it in words that I understand I get it. And I understand how God has had me by the hand from the very beginning to lead me forward and teach me through the things of my life. God bless you

In #50 the line "Through an utterly free decision..." regarding God revealing and giving himself to man, stuck out the most to me. Most relationships aren't freely given, in romance it's usually attraction from physical desire, vocational compatibility, or some other fleeting circumstance that inspires the desire to connect and give. Most relationships end because they are not free...someone gets older and uglier, someone wants to boost their career and not be "held back", someone goes through depression and the other "can't deal". And these relationships end and the love stops, the connection stops, the giving stops because one or the other bails for the lack of freedom in giving to the other. But this statement here of God giving himself in an ::utterly free decision:: is different from that kind of love, it's not dependent on us to meet a criteria for him to God to reveal and give himself to man, to us. Laying that out, I can say "Oh, God is looking for a serious relationship." I think that's so important to know and be reminded of. This can be such a foreign and mysterious point, especially if you come from a world with broken relationships. If it's not something you've experienced and understand implicitly, you have to really struggle to contextualize it for any of the rest to make sense or be appreciated. I really like that line and what it sets up.
