      Agree, I have some holes near the corner, and this makes sense. Just goop up over them.

    That was great. It would be cool to see some more detailed tutorials about using LF cameras. I have 2 LF cameras and just got a huge 300mm f/4.5 lens in barrel, will definitely have to try shooting using the technique you used here.

    I've been looking for a company in the US to replace my bellows, but after seeing this I'm thinking of touching up the holes with something. The are in pretty good shape. And I cant understand how to take the bellows off the front frame. My camera is almost the same as yours, its an 8x12, shoots 7x11 sheets, Eastman View No.2 Improved etc.

    Great job. May I ask, why take photos at dusk.. is it because there is less light out, therefore IF there are pinholes/light leaks, they will show up better on the film when developed?

    • @AwesomeCameras
      @AwesomeCameras  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think there was a specific reason we shot at dusk, I think it just happened to be that time of day when we were shooting the video

    • @AwesomeCameras
      @AwesomeCameras  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But I think the light leaks would show up best in direct sunlight

    I've swapped an entire bellows on a 6x9 cm folding roll camera (don't recall at this moment what brand/model it was; this was in 2001 or 2002); I've also use Liquid Electrical Tape to repair light leaks at the corners of the bellows. You have to watch this stuff, it stays sticky. A dusting of graphite lubricant (conveniently black) or talcum powder (inconveniently white) helps a lot to prevent the bellows from sticking to itself after this kind of repair. For very small leaks, I've covered them with black masking tape -- it's not 100% opaque, but works okay when the leaks are small to begin with.
    BTW, I own two working 1927 press cameras originally made for 9x12 cm glass plates, as well as a 1938 Speed Graphic and a 1940s vintage Graphic View (the latter pair both in 4x5).

    Solid fix! I did the same sort of repairs to an old polaroid pro-pack camera I had, and wanted to know if you had problems with the flex seal melting when it comes to the summer heat?

    just FYI it would improve the video if you remove the audio from the sped-up sections, having the audio sped up during timelapse segments makes it seem like you didnt care too much about the final video. also when you were talking about the photos, you had plenty of blank room on the sides of the video to show those images. i think what you say about the pictures would stick in people's minds more if you showed the image while talking about it instead of making people rewind to look at them. thats just some tips from my experience of doing YT, good luck with your channel and nice video.

    I have a kodak 2D 5x7 I am trying to restore. It doesn't currently have a lens. I have a 210mm barrel lens I was going to test out at some point , but it doesn't have a shutter. Was considering a packars shutter. Anyone know what lens and shutter combos were available for this camera in 1920s?

    Newly subscribed Dig your channel. Really love your Old as Dirt series.... I've found a beautiful Kodak No 2, Hawkette from UK , at Portabello Road street market. The bellows are worn and torn around the corners but mostly intact. I was wondering to patch it with a flexible paper mache fix... do you think that it would work?

    How do you know if the camera is in focus or not?

    • @JernD
      @JernD 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a piece of ground glass in the rear of the camera that you focus the image onto. You then insert the film holder where the glass was and expose the film.

  • @leevons_home_vids
    @leevons_home_vids 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Where did you buy the film and get it developed? I have a large format camera that uses those but it's missing the quite that you mount the film and plates in but I've been curious first as to where to get that film (or whatever it would be called) from

  • @MichaelZieschang

    Isn't that a problem when the bellows are being shortened. I mean they could get stressed when being stretched ;))

    • @AwesomeCameras
      @AwesomeCameras  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Michael Zieschang I did consider this before doing the repair. But with the lens that is currently on this camera you never need to extend them to a point that would stress the bellows...

      plus getting some extra life out of an old part is better when the other option is throwing the whole part in the trash and replacing it.

    I shoot a old chinese plate camera with a custom 5x7 back on it. It has some light leaks but I don't mind them. I have a 370mm Schneider 5.6 on it right now. Thing's a work horse I'll tell you that, I bring it to high school all the time

    I liked the video - stands to reason that as you go along, you'll find out more about these older cameras and the portraits will improve.
    The overall quality of the portraits is one of gravitas and timelessness. Really love them. Loved the cocktail glass in your portrait.
    Cheers.

    Enjoying this video and the last. But you're going about this light leak thing all wrong! Just put a flashing bicycle light IN the camera and go in a dark room with it. Then wait for your eyes to get used to the light levels and you will see little flashing pin pricks and lines around the lens board etc. You'll save a lot of film and effort. Invert your thinking!
    Also Sebastian is right. I stopped drinking 6 years ago but it is painful even for me to watch your pour that beer. Run it down the side of the glass man.
    Thinking of buying a Kodak Specialist (very similar camera) in a charity shop down the road. Bellows are wrecked though.

    You could have just called “ universal bellows” in England, gave them the measurements, replaced the old bellows with brand new red bellows instead of doing it half ass...
    “ Universal Bellows “ allows you to not only to have custom bellows made, but in different materials as well as colors
    ( red, green, black, white, ect...)
    your repair is not a good repair....
    You don’t have the bellows extension to photograph, especially in macro...
