  • Ruptured my achilles tendon on 19 December 2017. Biggest decision in week 1 was whether to do surgery or take the conservative (non-surgery) route. I've decided to take the non-surgical route. The aim of this video series is to provide a live case study on the non-surgery rehab process in Australia. I
    Key checklist to buy:
    1. Crutchez
    2. Knee scooter
    3. I-Walk 2.0
    4. Plastic chair for shower

Good video. I fully ruptured mine playing soccer. Went to the ER, X-Ray showed nothing, waited 2 weeks (cause I thought I just caused minor damage) then saw an Orthopedic Dr, another X-Ray, one MRI, surgery 3 days later, currently 2 weeks after surgery, stitches come out in 2 days, then hard cast for 2 weeks, then boot and the start of PT. The biggest pain about all of this is the time it will take to rehab. Using crutches for 1 month, and dealing with all of the day to day tasks is most difficult. It really changes the way you think and plan your day. Best of luck.

Those studies on re-rupture on surgery vs non surgery are from the US where they make more money with surgery charges on your insurance. (It is hard to trust US medical sources and data where it is known for selecting the data for better financial gains.)

Thanks for sharing your experiences ! I just ruptured my Achilles on Sunday playing first game of my basketball season. 5 minutes in I grabbed the ball and went to sprint/dribble and 'bang'. The feeling was exactly how described, where I initially thought someone had accidentally landed on my leg or kicked me, but when I looked back, everyone was metres away. Immediately hobbled to the bench and contemplated what I would do and after consultation with a physio I decided to go to the Physio the following morning . The physio confirmed with the Thompson test and generally feeling around my Achilles area that I had a rupture and was booked in to see an orthopedic surgeon the following day. During my time waiting for this appointment, I pretty much did the exact that you did and read a few online journals, studies and forums that went through the pros and cons of both surgical and conservative methods of healing the Achilles. The following day I saw the Orthopedic surgeon ( 46 hours had passed since I ruptured it, and he once again performed the Thompson test and then went through the two options available for me, and said that recent studies have shown there really is not much difference in terms of re ruptures if you were to take the conservative route over surgical, so based on this information plus the cost as I didn't have private hospital cover I chose non operative. I am planning to also do a week by week video on youtube to explain my injury and the progress through this long recovery and rehabilitation process. I am now going to watch all your videos and see if I can learn more about this ! Thanks and talk soon!

I had surgery three weeks ago to repair my ruptured achilles. I had watched a lot of your videos from Saturday morning (when I ruptured it playing basketball), until Monday afternoon when I was first able to get in to see an orthopedic specialist. I was definitely leaning towards non-surgical. He went over my options with me and said I could choose surgical or non-surgical, but advised me that because it had been a few days since the tear, there was the risk that going non-surgical would lead to the tendon being weaker for the rest of my life. I didn't realize this was an issue and don't see it being mentioned online, so I'm curious if others have heard the same.
My advice for anyone that has just ruptured your achilles is to immediately get it in a boot with a heel lift or a cast so that you can have a more successful chance at the non-surgical route. I still second guess myself on the route I took, especially given the cost and hassle of surgery, but in the end I just want to heal an be normal again.

Thanks for your valuable video. I am 59 years old just ruptured my Achilles tendon and want to take non-surgical route and avoid surgery. I am going to Indonesia for awhile and don't want to risk surgery complications while I am overseas. I am very upset I moved my foot the wrong way going up stairs and that's all it took. It was on the verge of rupturing due to sore tendon from exercising but never realized it would go out after feeling a pop. Thankfully, I can still walk around with a limp and move my foot around, but climbing stairs is very difficult without pain. I will keep everybody posted on my progress. I have an orthro boot which immensely helps with mobility.

I ruptured mine 3 days ago. I am shocked with how little it actually hurt. the initial rupture pain I put at a 1.5/10. for the remainder of the day I say a 2/10. when I wake up I say maybe a 3.5/10 for the first half hour but back down to a 2/10 for the rest of the day.
I also opted non surgical. my biggest fear like many I assume is the tendon is not contracted and close enough to heal properly. but that's a nagging fear many have I suppose. surgery at least would give that piece of mind vs the non surgical nagging fear in the back of your mind.

Just tore mine last week, very little to no pain. How's the non surgical route going?

    • @lieffers111
      @lieffers111 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

@@naciovillalpando9400 they put me in a splint for 2 weeks. than the airboot. I started walking on crutches immediately. i was able to stand on my boot at week 3. crutch assist walking with pressure at week 4. I was able to walk without my boot at week 8. I am currently on week 18. able to walk perfectly normal. I would say my range of motion is 90-95% what it was. the remainder will come in time. I'm backing off static stretching and focusing more one regaining my calf strength. I am able to do 2 single standing calf raises using my healing foot.
The pain throughout was non-existent. and hinestly that was the biggest mind fuck. the first month th really okayed mind tricks on me making me wish I had surgery. only because there was no pain. Like I mean zero pain. my foot was just there and unable to move. I found it so frustrating. so that fear was eating away in the back of my mind. "is it healing? why doesn't it hurt? is this nornal? I should feel something?" they kept on repeating over and over making me wonder if I was healing properly. trust the conservative approach. even if you feel no pain like I did. it works.
Just really focus on the early mobilization. but be cautious in the first 8 weeks. week 8-12 you can start to push the envelope a lot more but you still have a rerupture risk until week 12 so be mindful. I wore my boot until week 12 anytime I was doing something iffy, like even going to the store. I erred on the side of caution.
But now that I'm over 4 months I'm basically back to normal hust lacking strength.
The muscle comes back quick. but it takes a bit for your brain to relearn how to use your calf muscles again. but it comes.
be very mindful when you start walking, there's another tendon that runs down the calf, around the inside of your heel bone, to the bottom of your foot. you body will use this stabilizer tendon to compensate for your lack of calf muscle control to help you walk. you can develope tendonitis in it like I had a mild case of. it's not meant for walking but your body overuses it to compensate. if it flares up mention it to your physio or specialist. they will help.
Just hang in there. it gets better. keep your mind occupied because if your like me and always on the go, you go stir crazy with boredom. once the 1 no th mark passes, with your boot on, the only thing stopping you from going anywhere and doing anything is your mind. don't be scared. just be cautious.

@@SurrealParkour full rupture. and yes. a full rupture can either be extremely painful, or zero pain as I experienced.
in hindsight I'm thankful there was no pain. but at the time for the first month it really played mind tricks on me during the healing. going the conservative approach, it was always playing in the back of my mind "is it healing properly, something wrong because it doesn't hurt, did it actually reattach properly"
it was a very shitty what if scenario playing constantly in my mind. here I am 10 months later. full range of motion. full mobility and agility. my strength in my calf is back to around 90% original and still working on rebuilding that.
rebuilding the calf muscle is in my opinion the hardest part. very slow and tedious.

For me, I can say without hesitation that it was the correct decision. I might add, that anyone taking the non-operative route should be very selective with your choice of a physical therapist .

@@purellbrantly2248 i struggled badly in the beginning. The 1st 2 weeks are terrible. I would lower my leg slowly, and stand up really slow. It does get better after the 1st week

I’m in the same situation.. I’m an active person, this my sons 1st year in aau and I’m been training him to get him more better and it brought back my love for basketball and I started back playing then boom Achilles tear.. I’m currently in a boot and seeing a doctor next Monday.. the biggest wrench in my story is I dnt have insurance and got an estimate the surgerical route is 25k so I gotta go non surgical

It's such a painful injury. I'm also going through a recovery process in which I'm vlogging on my channel. Check them after you're done with this video. Btw great video bro. 👌🏽

I’m 24 and I have been finding your videos incredibly helpful/inspiring, really helped in this tricky time. I’m still torn between surgery vs no surgery but won’t get offered surgery till 5 weeks after injury occurrence date - would appreciate your thoughts?

Hi- thank you for your videos but was yours a full or partial rupture? What was the gap if it was a full rupture? Your recovery times suggest it was only partial.
