    Nice episode! Very good to hear some honesty about some..or..a drawback of a multihull. The motion in a monohull of comparable length to width (50-60ft) is superior and more predictable in confused water. Sorry for the sea sickness...anyone who has not experienced it..very hard to describe the feeling..even in a mild case. But, it does go away. The bodies inner gyroscope is an amazing thing. Great and well described episode!

    The cluster of black fenders (8:07) reminded me of my former maritime career. These fenders can be larger than a VW Beatle. Wrapped around in chains were old aircraft tires. I had to tow in the water or aboard a vessel.
    Thoroughly enjoying the trip and commentaries.

      Thanks First. Yes those floating fenders were huge. It may have been hard to tell from the footage but they were as big as a passenger van each. We were not sure if they were fenders or mooring balls for the Freighters to tie to while they wait for a spot on the dock?

      Thanks. I've talked plenty in past episodes about the sails we were using. You may want to go back and watch them. In the future episodes, when the wind dies a bit we go back to using the Parasail. Otherwise we used the Genoa a lot. Almost never used the small jib. The main was rarely used if we were going down wind as it did more banging than helped with our speed. It was just easier to sail with the big screecher or the Parasail in most cases.

    Always buy the blue colored Globe Marine Run-Dry impellers. They are 3 times more durable and last three times as long. The cost increase of the product is minuscule compared to the problems standard impellers cause. On a side note, after buying "How not to Die", I have lost 23 lbs.

      Very cool about the weight loss. I fell off the wagon when I spent all that time on this voyage, eating less than healthy food.. I have to get back to it. Congrats. Hello Craig, I pity you when you arrived in this harbor with all these rusty boats and see how sick you were.
    Would you say that the X5 is a boat with average speed, or below average or above average?

    Thank you for your videos.

      It sailed quite well for a Cruising Cat. It is not a super light performance cat, So it won't out sail them but considering all the comforts of this boat (and its much heavier weight), it sailed quite well. We hit a max speed of 17. We sailed on a beam reach with both sails up at over 12 knots average. That is pretty fast in my book for a boat that has all the comforts of a Condo. But then again I am presently a Mono hull sailor and my boat wont go anywhere near that speed. :-)

  • @robweiss748
    @robweiss748 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    My biggest takeaway from this episode is, I don’t want a superlight boat. Only the Leopard 50 has a higher dryweight than this boat, 20t vs 18t, and you were still getting tossed around quite a bit. I cannot imagine bluewater cruising in a 10-11t boat, don’t care how fast it is. Basically, it seems like the really light boats have the alley kitchens, cause the designers know they are going to be bumpy rides,

    • @Bowmans-Woods
      @Bowmans-Woods  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. Everyone says they want speed but have they really sailed on a light/fast cat? I bet if they did they would find the boat would not be very comfortable as you will feel every ripple and wave when sailing or when at anchor.

    • @robweiss748
      @robweiss748 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cruising Off Duty so as part of my decision matrix, I’m setting a minimum dry weight, eg 13-14t, any lower than that the boat has to be really compelling and I’ll want to have a really thorough test sail.

  • @GaryMCurran
    @GaryMCurran 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    So, even before you get to the generator, you had the propellor driven generator off the sugar scoop, and the wind turbine might have been producing power, but the question is how much? Also, are there solar arrays onboard, I don't recall?
    A lot of years men sailed the ocean blue without watermakers or generators, so I guess it can be done. Saltwater showers, manual desalination, scurvy, rotten food. I mean, it's been done, right? LOL :p :D
    Glad you had spares on board for the genset, I'm not sure I would have thought about that for a new, out of the factory yacht.

    • @Bowmans-Woods
      @Bowmans-Woods  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. This boat is a high tech beast. So it takes a lot of power. On a perfectly sunny day the Solar can more than handle it but the cloudy days and of course at night the draw was more than we could take in with just the water propelled generator, so we needed to fire up the generator from time to time. I was also surprised we wore out an impeller so quickly. All we can figure is because the boat was bouncing up and down so much the generator intake must have been out of the water a bit too much and we sucked in air and the impeller overheated. So, it is something Sean is going to have to keep in mind. Don't fire up the Genny if it is super wavy.

    Interesting. I was watching the "Sailing Zatara' episode which comes out on the same day as COD and they had the same problem in the Pacific - replacing the impeller on the generator. Even looked the same... Is there only one generator on the X5?

    • @Bowmans-Woods
      @Bowmans-Woods  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmmm that could be an issue with trying to use a Generator in big waves. Too much air getting sucked into the intake. Yes there is only 1 generator. It is a Diesel 15 KW. So it is quite large and can charge all the batteries in a very short amount of time. We maybe used it for an hour a day around 9pm to top up the batteries so they would still be fairly charged after the boats needs all through the night. Day time we had plenty of solar.

    As I understand it, dolphins who behave like this ride a pressure wave created in the water by the bow/s of a vessel as it makes headway.
    It therefore requires a minimum of effort on the part of Dolphins to sustain the speeds they can attain from vessels under way.
    So because they have two bows Catamarans would be a particularly appealing ride for those playful denizens of the open sea.

    P.S. WAL is not only the term used for a whale but also for the mythological figure that returns at Ragnarok to protect ppl from evil [ WAL = LAW which is pronounced LOVE in German] - to distinguish between both whales are therefore named "Walfisch" also.

      Thanks Marcel. Nope. No story on the Dinghy. It is shown a fair number of times in the episodes. It just didn't seem that exciting to me. It is a hard fiberglass dinghy. That's it. I know Tamas was not a fan and prefers a regular RIB. I have to say I would prefer a regular RIB as well. A regular RIB is more stable to get in and out of and this tender tended to splash you when you were moving through waves. So, I probably wont get one of these. The selling feature is they are light to carry.

      No. Im not sure what they would say? It is an impeller. They break, and you get use to replacing them. Not usually this quick but we guess it was because of all the waves. The Impeller must have sucked in air instead of water and it overheated? Just a guess on our part.

  • @robertfrederick9061
    @robertfrederick9061 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I find it odd that a relatively "new" xquisite 50 Cat can manifest these issues. It almost points out questionable design faults that this voyage is being used to Test Bed. If a generator impeller fails because of the raw water intake being positioned improperly the Cat designer needs to "go back to the drawing board" or his CAD module to eliminate the predisposition. These design faults relegate the Xquisite 50 to the status of a "coastal" craft versus a true "blue water" craft because different unfavorable sea conditions are experienced on ocean crossings.

    • @Bowmans-Woods
      @Bowmans-Woods  5 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @maldwindrummond6158
      @maldwindrummond6158 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, the main reason I am interested in it is that I would like to be able to row for exercise. Two people I know who have performance cats, one in the Pacific, one in Annapolis have them and love them. I may see if I can have a ride in the one in Annapolis during the show. Tippy is a no go for me, but I would like to get some exercise!

    • @Bowmans-Woods
      @Bowmans-Woods  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It wasn't so much the tippy-ness that was the big detractor. It was the fact that when there were any waves and you try to motor through them you get splashed and soaked. The regular RIB with the big inflated tube around the outside deflects spray out away from the passengers inside. Unless it is dead flat when you are motoring, you are going to get wet. So, it would not be my first choice unless I had a very small Cat and was worried about carrying too much weight. Then you just have to motor slow through any waves. Or wear foul weather gear. :-)

    Too much of your face in the frame. You need to shoot more of what is happening, and cast a voice already behind the scenes. You are certainly a handsome guy, but 60% of the video watching your face becomes boring. No offense! This is constructive criticism. Great trip on a beautiful boat!

      OK. I can take constructive criticism. Thanks for your input.

    Hahahaha, we sail tough here in Southern Africa, the fishing vessel, that rusty one was just flushing out their tanks, it definitely wasn't poo😂😂. Your seasickness is the reason I don't like catamarans, they lurch in all manner of unnatural and unpredictable ways, and that slam, lurch, slap, rise, roll, fall, slam on the inner hulls and bridge deck is intolerable, great at anchor , great downwind, shite on every other point of sail, can't head up to anything like a monohull, and can barely heave to, I sleep way better on monohulls, everything is predictable because you are a plane with a defined counterbalanced point, and you just pivot left or right about it, cats are the exact opposite, two stable hulls with a pivot at the centre the rig wants to lean and the hulls don't, their beams are too wide. They're best suited to shallow keys and shoaly calm waters, even with wind on a flat sea they're fine, but I wouldn't even take a gun boat into the southern ocean, or even the roaring forties, but I'd take a 38' mid seventies long keel/modified full keel cutter any day! Yes they can do it, but I'd hazard a guess that when the shit hits the fan you'll all prefer to be on a good stout monohull

      I hear what you are saying about the Mono. It is a decision that each person has to make based on how they plan to use their boat. I see Janice and I doing a long slow circumnavigation on a Cat and since we will be at anchor at least 80% of the time, a Cat suits our needs best. If I was a racer or planned to do a lot of long passages with very little time at anchor before going on to the next passage and wasn't planning to take time to "smell the roses" by doing land exploring, then I could get onboard with the idea that a Mono might be a better choice. Different boats for different benefits. Side benefit of a cat. You can sleep at night knowing that if you hit something in the pitch dark ( like a whale sleeping, a shipping container or other floating trash, which we saw a lot of along the Brazilian coast) and you punch a hole in your hull, you Cat rest easy that your Cat will stay floating. Your Mono is going to get pulled to the bottom fast with that big heavy Keel dragging you under. You have mere mintues to get everything you need to live in a life raft. So wake up and act fast. Better have your ditch bag readily available and your life boat in ship shape. Because you are going to need it. A modern Cat will stay floating, even if it had a hole below the water line and took on water. I'd prefer to wait to be rescued or found, waiting on my cat, that is large and easy to spot, than bobbing around in a tiny life raft. :-)

    Where's the dramamine pills when you need them. They work well for me, although I've never been in seas like that before 🤢🤮

      Ya. There was an oil spill recently in Walvis Bay. They were scraping the crap off the boats and walls of the harbor

      They have constant oil spills. No regulations . They don't cap wells so oil flows (destroyed the rivers) into the Ocean. Nothing's done to stop it.

    I thought this was a sailing video not a video of you in your cabin telling every body how sea sick you felt let's sea some sailing from the helm not your bedroom !!

      There is plenty of footage in the past episodes and in coming episodes of me showing sailing. This was meant as an informative episode letting the prospective sailing couple that if you are thinking of big open ocean passages that even if you think you don't get seasick while sailing, You clearly can and it will knock you on your ass. But, there is a bright side. You will get through it and can handle any condition, once you do. I thought that story was just as or more important than me showing shot of the boat sailing along. We did that for 8 weeks, so there was ton of time to film that. Don't worry there is plenty footage of that during this whole voyage. And FYI, I sometimes filmed from inside a cabin because there was a lot of wind outside and I was concerned that the mics would pick up too much wind noise and the speaking would get drowned out. I did have my reasons.
