The kid probably sat at the corner table because he felt too awkward and nervous at the other tables, because people on the spectrum often have a hard time in new social situations, and probably had no idea the table was claimed. Yeah, if the event probably mentioned that the store is going to have "expert/professional/experienced Dungeon Masters" or something along that vein, I can definitely see a misguided parent thinking it's something you need qualifications for. Also, Karen's "that doesn't sound like the game I read about" seems like she thought it's something like Monopoly or Risk where the story comes from rules, so the OP's explanation of the game being rated R and being heavy with its plot would have sounded like he's either not playing the right game or the game right, or that he's gatekeeping her son on a "ew, kids" basis.

This has to be one of the most depressing stories you've covered, not because of the horror itself, but because of how it ended. At least with the vast majority of other stories, there's some sort of happy ending, even if it's as simple as "the problem player was kicked out" or "the players left the awful campaign". Here, however, this can't be classed as anything other than a complete downer ending - the players and GM were forced to stop their campaign right as it was about to reach its conclusion, the Karen and the store owner got exactly what they wanted with zero repercussions and the neuroatypical kid was still stuck in an unhealthy situation.

That "vibration the OP spoke of was, most likely, the child trying to express distress, but having no outlet. It sux that those supposed adults had to ruin a "one-last-session" sort of night. Any reasonable adult will realize that when something is described as "R rated" it is not for children. As for the new owner, it should be illegal to monetize AL events. But, that child had to witness his mother going off. Any "normal" child gets upset when their parent does, especially when they don't understand. Very likely, this kid had no pressure valve of any kind. So, yes, this is an awful story around the kid, but it is so much worse because he had to be there for it.

Before covid, the local library near me had a weekly D&D session for those who were under 18, as there was a worker who loved D&D and wanted to show off to younger kids the fun of RPG. My husband and myself volunteered to be DMs as we had 20 kids show up every week and there was no way 1 DM was going to cut it (we had 4 DMs total). The weeks went on and certain kids wanted certain DMs; but with every group there is always the problem child, literally. I had a child that would throw a fit when they didn't get their way (when a roll failed, missed an attack) and my favorite: when this kid was talking they wanted the whole table to be completly silent and focus on him. (These are kids ranging from 10 years old to 17 so attention span is short) Eventually we had to get the kids parents involved and well.... let's say because of these parents we aren't able to do these weekly D&D sessions anymore. It always take just 1 person to ruin it for the rest. I'll miss DMing those kids as D&D is such a fun experience! Maybe one day there will be another opportunity to set this up

I teared up a little during this story. The poor kid has a mom who doesn't take interest in what they like, but also the way she acts does stop his progression of being able to grow and handle his disability better. Extreme stressful situations like that causes anyone severe anxiety, but with a disability it also causes them to sort of go into super panic mode. That can reverse a lot of therapy in the matter of seconds

  • @scottsmith9936

I honestly feel awful for the kid. Shaking like that and not changing facial expression is a trauma response. He was probably terrified and disheartened that he finally had a chance to do something he wanted and his mom ruined that too.

Crit Crib lore being expanded right here.
On a more serious note, it always seems to me that kids with some kind of mental or neuro disorder often seem to have mothers who are unnecessarily protective and aggressive. While you can chalk it up to stress and constant pressures of having to look after them (my brother has severe mental disabilities, and my mum is very similar in many ways), I still find it completely unacceptable to act like that. The kid was clearly scared by it. I also feel bad for the DM, alway sucks not being able to wrap up a fun campaign, and having an important moment like that ruined just makes it worse.

What was your first clue? A guy that basically ran a game of apparently all girls that constantly had orgies? Or the fact that he had been playing this campaign for a length of time, but seriously "forgot" to tell his players that he was going off to college until right before he left? Or how he dramatically pulled out his acceptance letter to the college to prove his intellectual prowess to the Karen? or a manager that didn't have a clue as to who his actually employees were and unprofessionally threatened to fire an employee in a crowded shop (Defamation and managerial harassment aka lawsuit)? Or the fact that the "new Owner" who obviously "could care less about gaming etiquette" was hosting a tournament and didn't bother attempting to explain that they were having a private game and wasn't part of the tournament, especially when the proper thing to do would be to designate all the tables for that night to the tournament and not letting private games take place in house that night, especially since it was a "rated R" game and the tournament seemed to be for all ages (so PG at best)? Or the fact that the entire subject of the story (the Karen) seemed to be seconded to his 'amazing' story that he created?
I would take bets that this guy is probably one of those DMs that creates a story in a few hours, thinks that if he shows it to Wizards of the Coast, they would buy it from him and hire him on the spot to create for them, tries to railroad (AKA probably has something to do with any orgy sections added to the story) and gets offended if they venture too far off his absolutely amazing storyline.

@@TheMagicman1971 "A guy that basically ran a game of apparently all girls that constantly had orgies?" Ingame orgies, not real ones, holy shit people read the stories before you bitch.
"Or how he dramatically pulled out his acceptance letter to the college to prove his intellectual prowess to the Karen?" Now i'm pretty certain that i didnt see that part to the story, however: It's more likely it would've been for his friends, not the "karen". Along the lines of said "i'm moving soon".
"or a manager that didn't have a clue as to who his actually employees were and unprofessionally threatened to fire an employee in a crowded shop (Defamation and managerial harassment aka lawsuit)?"
not unreasonable for someone who JUST took the reins not long ago, honestly. Customer says an employee's acting up? You assume they're right.
"Or the fact that the "new Owner" who obviously "could care less about gaming etiquette" was hosting a tournament and didn't bother attempting to explain that they were having a private game and wasn't part of the tournament, especially when the proper thing to do would be to designate all the tables for that night to the tournament"

"Or the fact that the entire subject of the story (the Karen) seemed to be seconded to his 'amazing' story that he created?"
Idunno, the Karen seemed to be the focus, as that's what RUINED it. Unless you're saying he shouldnt talk about the plot period? He gave a summary of it, background, and info about the moving, and got to the meetup for the session, stated player 4 was late, and the karen shit starts, and after it's over as an edit sums up how the ending WOULD have gone...
      Please fucking read.
"I would take bets that this guy is probably one of those DMs that creates a story in a few hours, thinks that if he shows it to Wizards of the Coast, they would buy it from him and hire him on the spot to create for them, tries to railroad (AKA probably has something to do with any orgy sections added to the story) and gets offended if they venture too far off his absolutely amazing storyline."
Now you're just making blatant assumptions, despite the fact that he did state there were multiple routes they could take for the ending of the session alone, depending on how they acted, it's "railroading"...
Not sure how orgy = railroading either, unless you mean the supposed luck? Even though that's still a semi-common thing even without an Orgy. Such as a guy slamming back an entire fucking bottle and getting wasted, and getting the most disgustingly lucky rolls you've ever seen or such...
tl;dr, your argument is kinda bullshit and shows you havent read the story for shit, and more have an axe to grind than any valid points considering it takes zero effort to counter them all...

From the sound of it, the employees were tied up running the tables, and probably knew the group and had of course left them to their business knowing they were going to use the back table no one else used. The owner was new and probably didn't know these teens were just regular patrons because it sounds like they'd missed a few sessions while OP was prepping to head to uni, so they weren't aware of/present for the change in ownership any more than the new owner was aware of his store's regular patronage. Heck, sounds like the new owner probably thought that D&D was only ever played in big events like this, rather than in a casual capacity, so it's unsurprising that he didn't expect anything but people coming for this launch event.
As for "taking up space while an event was going on," it sounds pretty damn unlikely that this table would've been used for the event. It was pointed out to be kinda falling apart, and only big enough to seat a group of 4, which is basically useless at a big event like that where you'd want to be able to seat large groups in order to be able to run as many people through a module as possible. 4e modules in particular are mechanically scaled for a minimum 5 players, so you'd need a table that seats 6, at the very least, to run one.
