  • I took my Vulcan 500 to be stored out at an airport to free up space in the garage. I figured it would be as good a time as any to do my first review!

    If I can find one for cheap I may buy this as my first bike. Instead of getting a sport bike, which I initially wanted, I figured a cruiser would be better for commuting.

    The post '96 models were, I understand, supplied with 32mm carbs, @32hp ish. The pre'96 models had 34mm carbs, and 50hp. It's also the same engine as was used in the Ninja 500.

    Great review. Very informative. I have the '09 version of this bike. I'm 5-11 as well and I've found it to be just the easiest thing to ride you can imagine. I've never ridden a sport bike so I have no basis for comparison to that genre but I never notice an oversteer on the Vulcan 500. I'll try to think about that next time I'm on it. I appreciate the tips for chain and rim cleaning.

      I have the '09 as well...same color as his. I'm 5'9" and love it...esp. the seat. Wonder if I would like an 800 or 900 Classic though...or even a 1500.

    My buddy is selling me his 04 Vulcan 500 for 300 bucks. I think that's a good deal. It has a blown rear tire and needs a new battery. Hopefully between replacing the tires and battery and some elbow grease to get her cleaned up again I should have a nice first bike for under 600 bucks.

    Was my first street bike and i still have it and I think it's smooth as glass and great on turns, but maybe your tires weren't aired correctly. And maybe I've never ridden a sport bike so I don't know the difference, but the Vulcan is a lot better than in turns than an enduro.

  • @ianrutherford878

    are you saying it wants to go straight when you turn?That is UNDERsteer.

    • @butkusfan23
      @butkusfan23 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ian Rutherford I was just thinking the same thing. In a car, when the car does not turn but it keeps going, its called understeer or “push,” and its common in front wheel drive.

    can the Vulcan handle a 280 lb ( 5' 8") rider and do highway speeds?

    • @josephfoster30
      @josephfoster30 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes plenty of power but extremely front heavy on turns.

    • @ababbit7461
      @ababbit7461 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Rick, yes. I was 240lbs and 6' when I owned my Vulcan 500. It will beat a Harley Sportster 883 in a race to 60 mph. It is quick if you use it like a sport bike engine. Lug it like a V-twin and it dogs. It is basically 1/2 of a Ninja 1000 engine (2 cylinders instead of 4). It will do 95 mph on the hwy if pushed. Riding at 75 mph is no sweat.

    • @tricd0444
      @tricd0444 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      After a valve job with any adjustment to the intake valves, the carbs should be re-synchronized. Super simple job, doesn't take more than an afternoon if you're alright at turning a wrench.

  • @teddmented

    It doesn’t oversteer its a smaller cruiser and steers like one. He’s comparing it to a sports bike. That’s going to corner much tighter but be less stable and balanced than a cruiser. That’s the tradeoff

      The front end is extremely front heavy and wants to fall over at slow corners.

  • @josephfoster30
    @josephfoster30 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I just test drove this bike and it is extremely front heavy, wants to fall over at slow corners. Only an experienced rider should ride this. Are all cruisers like this?

    • @ababbit7461
      @ababbit7461 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Joseph, read up on "rake and trail" on a motorcycle. The more "rake" the more stable on the hwy, but heavy steering in the parking lot. The more rake, the less trail. Low trail makes for "twitchy" riding on the hwy. So, since this bike has the front end "raked out" a bit, it should steer heavy in the parking lot and have "over steer" like it does. It is perfect for short hwy rides and around town riding. Not all cruisers have heavy steering in slow speed riding. How do you overcome heavy steering? Wider bars!

    Is the 500 a good bike in General?????

  • @bry954rr

    Question. Does the vulcan 500 have a low gas light?

    • @danielnotnow9930
      @danielnotnow9930 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No.... but you get use on using the odometer and every time you fill up, you turn the odometer to 0. You check how many miles till your next fill up and that becomes your "gas light"

    Do all cruisers have this much over steer? Does a Harley Davidson over steer like this?

    • @stereotax
      @stereotax 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I find that countersteering makes all the difference when going any faster than parking-lot speed on a cruiser. The idea of countersteering sounds crazy but it completely eliminates over-steer.
