Same and I've noticed this with a lot of French...another language I found that is strangely similar in quite a few ways to Spanish is Pennsylvania Dutch which is spoken by the Amish. I know quite a bit of PA Dutch and there are actually many words pronounced the same as they are en Espanol and even have the same or very similar meaning.
I'm learning spanish, I can speak decent spanish and have a good enough spanish reading age, but I only understood 10-20% of what he said. Maybe it's the listening and comprehension where I lack?

Because the root is Latin. Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese are part of the Romance Languages.
You guys are an inspiration to me. I'm french and I'm in a long distance relationship with an italian dude and you give me SO MANY GOOD PRANK IDEAS. This channel is like "tutorial : how to piss off your italian bf" and the worst part is that it works. When my bf came to my house for the first time, he asked what type of pasta I had and he flipped because according to him I only have the type of pasta that grannies and kiddos eat. He asked for spaghetti, gave him some, he went "no those arent spaghetti. They're too thin, I can't make spaghetti with these, we'll go out and buy real spaghetti" (with the italian accent and all the hand gestures). It was hilarious.
Story time: I’m going through a rough separation from my husband. It was sudden and pretty unexpected. I’m having a tough time watching movies or videos with couples without being triggered to tears, but somehow, that excludes you two! I’ve binged many of your videos the last few days and they’ve given me a little bit of an escape from reality even if just for a few minutes. Thank you both for being so incredibly you. I have enjoyed watching in spite of my current situation. ❤

Carlo you are doing yourself a favour. I have been married for 7 years and I picked up Romanian pretty quick, so when I met my wife I knew already the language.
Fast forward there are moments when you are mad for something happened at work for example and you want to talk about it but you have to translate some of our swearings in another language, well all the poetry of our swearings (which help us go by that moment) gets lost. Try to say the same swearing in English, it is not the same thing. Same thing when you see an Italian movie and someone makes a joke. So I definitively think that you are both doing yourself a favour learning each other's language. :)

French Italian Portuguese Spanish are indo European languages... they can understand each other at some point
I speak Spanish as well as English and some of the Italian words sound very similar to Spanish so I'd have a little bit of context here and there even if there weren't subtitles, but otherwise it's seems like it could be pretty hard to learn.

If you really want fluency Sarah then you need a more immersive experience with the language. Movies, music, and probably more Italian only time with Carlo would help you a whole lot. Even watching this video it's easy to see that when you struggle he just switches back to English. You need to be pushed to take the next step. Don't be discouraged when it gets hard.
