  • A major Mercedes oversight tainted what was otherwise a pretty perfect day for the team, but at Red Bull, could we have seen the last of Sergio Perez in F1?

It’s amazing to me how many of these reviews of the 2024 Belgium GP that I’ve seen completely ignore the fact that Merc allowed RUS to change team strategy to the detriment of Lewis and did not inform Lewis early enough of the implications of the change in strategy to split the strategies across drivers. Lewis should have been given full information to 1.) Opt for a one stop for himself; and 2.) Deploy his tires to challenge RUS much earlier in the final stint

I don't think it was any Nobel prize winning strategy from George. He just took the gamble. If he stops again, he loses track position with no chance of catching Sir Lewis. If he goes on the one stop, the worst that can happen is that he may end up fourth or fifth.
If memory serves me right, Sir Lewis had suggested going on the one stopper before zGeorge did so. It would have been intetesting to see both going long on those worn hard tyres, of which Sir Lewis' was two laps fresher.

My thoughts are that the only thing that allowed Mercedes and Russell to gamble with this one stop strategy was nearly perfect performance by Lewis. They knew that Lewis will give them the win with his control and calculated that with or without 2nd pitstop they will be on 5th place (give or take one) with George. Additional factors as clean air in front and less wear helped George to maintain this P1 to the last laps but for me Lewis was the one who won this race for Mercedes and I didn’t like the fact that George went to win not exactly on merit or real strategy masterstroke but pure luck. Apparently he took too much luck winning and there was none left for the scrutiny.

Marc... You can't have it both ways.........
If Russell was "inspired / brave / smart" and insisted on a 1stop strategy and therefore - as per Merc themselves have stated - the car used a little extra fuel & a little extra tires which nudged them up against the weight limit then Russell too must share some of the unfortunate outcome - saying that he had "done absolutely nothing to deserve the outcome" is not correct - he has to share "some" of the blame IMO...

Did he use extra fuel tho? On the F1 official website it states a Technical Delegate’s Report says the car was regular weight before an excessive amount of fuel was drained. If that's true and I got it right, then he didn't use too much fuel, and I'm pretty sure the tire deg wasn't a big part of the underweight since you can't even count the full loss of deg, only assess how much MORE it would've been compared to normal deg.

He was fuelled for a 2 stop not 1 stop, and this affected tyre wear too. If you read Doc 42 (and Doc 44) that refers to fuel load as well. George needs to shoulder some of the blame as OP suggested.

They had initially weighed the car & could immediately tell that the car would fail the weigh limit because it was already at the edge of the limit of 798kg before the test sample removal - so that's why they weighed it several times on different scales with Merc staff present...
As far as fuel burn, excess tire deg etc.., question - It was suggested by Merc themselves that they had made a mistake and had not made a proper calculation to take into effect the 1-stop strategy with any subsequent changes to fuel use, tire deg, lack of lift and coast from having to defend against a rapidly closing Hamilton etc..., Merc F'd up because they didn't calculate for a 1 stopper in advance because that strategy wasn't in play until GR requested it...

Great analysis as always. In my mind, When McLaren went through those two tough years with Danny Ric that simply didn't live up to the expectations, they made the tough decision to drop him from the final year of his contract, took a (calculated) risk securing Oscar and look how that has paid off for them. RedBull hasn't had the guts to do essentially the same thing and have made a mockery of the talent they have waiting in the wings... RedBull have dropped drivers and promoted drivers for less. On that basis, Liam Lawson should be the one to take over that Red Bull seat this year or next. At the very least VCARB for the 2nd half with a look to move up to the main team in 2025. They risk losing him to a factory drive at Audi.... Wild times.

Problem is on that basis if they immediately drop Lawson in they are making a mockery of the supposedly brilliant breeding ground for talent that the junior team RB (still think of it as Torro Rosso myself) is meant to be. If that system is serving its function and Perez is yanked, than either Ricciardo or Tsnouda takes the seat at RBR, not parachuting Lawson into the senior team.
Honestly I suspect the way it might work out is Perez is pulled, Ricciardo promoted to RBR for the remainder of the season. Lawson takes the seat at RB and if by the end of the season if Ricciardo proves no better than Perez he is pulled and someone gets put in the RBR car and a replacement is sought for the RB team. That might head off losing Lawson to Audi(Sauber) in the hope that he can perhaps be a good team player at RB or potentially a decent partner to Max at RBR.

It might not make much difference with a new driver and it can even make things more complicated since he would not be that familiar with the car and could struggle with the car even more than Perez, resulting in Red Bull changing it's second driver more than once towards the end of the season.

From what I read, the car with its wheels on was above minimum weight. The wheels with tyres when removed from the car were weighed and were found to be compliant. The car weighed again without its wheels was above minimum weight. 1Kg of fuel was removed and the car was at or above minimum weight. The car was then drained of its remaining fuel and weighed again and it came in as being underweight. So if what I have written is correct, why is the car underweight? Do they not weigh them prior to race weekend? Has some physical item been removed or broken off? and if so which item. The more I think about this the more I confuse myself. I have now discovered another channel that has explained the reason as to why Russel's car was underweight and it apparently comes down to the additional wear on the tyres due to him only doing a one stop race plus the lack of rubber pick up as there was no warm down lap. If this is correct then it is a major mistake by both the team and Russel. Russel convincing the team to let him do a one stopper and of course the team with all their info should have been aware of the additional wear involved in such an attempt. No excuses! However, I am sure I also read somewhere that the wheels together with the tyres were weighed after having been removed from the car and they were compliant, So still a little bit of a mystery remaining.

I'm not that sure, if the wheels weren't included, immediately the engineers would start lowering the weight of the wheels to make the package as light as possible. Then the FIA would need to start weighing the wheels too and we're back on square one.

This is a question I'd appreciate being answered: Why are cars with questionable weights like Russell's now weighed with some reference tyres given marginal weight differences?
~375g per corner isn't that inconceivable after such an extremely long stint. I understand that under the old regs, this would've been more difficult given that each team had their own wheel designs, but now it's a provided design across the grid, no?

I've always thought the same! Weighing with reference tires or without tires makes sense to me. And set a weight limit on the rims or something

At no point over the weekend can your car be under weight that’s why. So no you can’t have tyres that were never a racing tyre on for a weight reference.

Because rules are rules. You could use any number of variables to justify being underweight.

You can't use the full weight loss of the long stint wheel, you gotta compare it to a "normal" stint and only use the difference.

I had hoped Checko would have gotten his MoJo back by now but have come to the conclusion he has lost the neurological edge an F1 driver needs to have in order to be competitive. He understands what he needs to do but can't make his body perform at a high level. I suspect Danny Ric has the same problem.

My bad for not knowing that F1 would penalize a driver for taking a chance and brilliantly driving to preserve his tires for a one-stopper. They pretend to be so environmentally conscious - eco-fuel, hybrid electric, etc. - but force drivers to take on new rubber at the drop of a hat. (Example, late race switch to soft tires to get the fastest lap.). Just ridiculous.

Agreed. I was just saying, that from a fan perspective, it makes no sense to penalize GR who drove a great race. And, while every pound or kilo counts, would 3.3 pounds be the difference at being able to keep Lewis at bay? I dunno. Maybe you could shed some light on that question. I thought a great race to watch was ruined. And, I’m a Lewis fan.

I will repeat this here. George’s car 1.5kg lighter than regs through the race. Which means he had better speed faster lap times and much better tire deg. Without having that advantage because it was and got disqualified for it I don’t see Geroge winning this race on merit.

Regarding Perez, it's not good enough and he's choked *WAY* too many times ... the outcome is inevitable, and sadly terribly late. That said, you may be overstating his race win prospects at Spa. The high downforce setup clearly held Red Bull back. It hurt Verstappen, also ... he wasn't exactly carving through the field. I doubt Perez could have held off the Mercedes or McLarens at the front, in any case.
