    When I was stationed onboard the USS Nimitz as a Fire FIghter (DC), I remember witnessing the anchor being dropped when we arrived at our home port in Bremerton Wa. Those chain links look HUGE in person. It's amazing to see just how massive some components of the ship need to be in order for it to function. The first time I actually saw the ship up close, I couldn't believe how massive it was. I was actually able to also walk underneath the ship while it was in for repairs in dry dock. But even a ship that size would still list while out in deep ocean. A slow, steady rock from side to side mostly. But during bad weather, you could almost walk on it's walls depending on how close to the flight deck you happened to be.

    Anchor chains are not painted to prevent rust as stated early in this video. The paint you see is marking the length of chain, the distance between the paint markers is called a shackle and is 90' long. The first marker is 1 shackle from the anchor and marked with a red painted link and 1 white painted link either side, 2 shakles out is 2 white links either side of the red and so forth. When coming up to anchor the Master orders how many shackles he wants the crew to pay out for a given depth of water. Shackles can usually be counted when free falling anchor and stopping at the desired length out. Heaving in is monitored by counting shackles coming up through the hawser pipe.

    • @careymcintosh5272
      @careymcintosh5272 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@stangood Well as a Ships Master for 30 years I never saw a ships anchor chain that was painted apart from the red and white markers. Anchor chain is subjected to frequent and violent burnishing from the gypsy when the anchor chain is running over it, whether paying out or heaving. When dropping an anchor it is literally just that ie: free falling. A chain flys over a gpsy at such a speed you often see sparks coming of it. Paint will not survive that punishment, even the marker paint needs to be repainted regularly because it just wears off. Even when the chain is laying on the sea bed it is continually being abraided. Its hard enough to keep paint on the rest of the ship that doesn't have physical contact with anything.

      Really? then find another video because this one does NOT show that at all :( even on the deck which does have a sort of limited amount of people & not even including the actual pilots, figure 3 people for every "hot" aircraft that is min. 75 people just for the aircraft BEHIND the island and minimum one or two more replacements either just below either resting or working & that is JUST in the squadrons NOT the red shirts, purple shirts "typical daytime on a "cold" deck not launching or recovering is around 300 people & that would be WITHOUT aircraft with live munitions' that would add more people AND more danger, worked on 4 flight decks and we are trained to NEVER go anywhere alone
      BECAUSE THAT WAY SOMEONE IS WATCHING YOUR BACK! unlike movies or fables is more danger from exhaust and tools and chains than being sucked up. Need to show a few fire drills on any of these ships is more chaotic than black friday at walmart :) Peace Rick

    • @petittrainguernsey3297
      @petittrainguernsey3297 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      So the anchor digs into the sea bed and the vessel must lay enough chain so it lays horizontal on the seas bed. This allows the weight of the vessel to have a horizontal rather than vertical pull on the anchor. For a vessel of this size it’s the weight of the chain on laying in the sea bed that provides most of the resistance to wind or current.

    • @Phildo8
      @Phildo8 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well not entirely true. If it weren’t for the anchor going down and hitting the sea floor to sort of bury itself the carrier would simply drift with the current & be at its misery bc let’s say for example that you remove the giant anchor & use only the chain itself. Although the links of the chain are massive solid steel that weight alone wouldn’t be enough to hold even a Nimitz class carrier let alone a monster carrier like The USS Ronald Regan. I know for a fact that if you were to use the chain alone on the Regan although massive like I said without the anchor dragging those massive links to the bottom the chain would simply float freely again leaving you the misery of the insanely strong currents especially in the Atlantic.

    I would like a detailed look at the holdback strut... how it holds the aircraft at full power, and releases when the CAT fires.

    • @ShadowRhapsody81
      @ShadowRhapsody81 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      If i remember correctly, they actually snap/break when the cat is fired.
      The aircraft bump into place, then the strut is locked in, then the shuttle is scooted forward to take out the slack. Then the aircraft slowly throttles up.
      Its not till the violent release of pressure into the cat that enough force hits the strut to snap it.

    • @borysnijinski331
      @borysnijinski331 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Breaks when enough catapult force is applied. It takes a little time for catapult to build pressure so to allow for that, the hold back bar holds the plane until sufficient force develops to launch the plane. It is precisely machined to break at a certain location and at certain force.
