The 'Replicators' department could totally justify having their own TH-cam channel, the number of amazing projects they must do on a regular basis must be fascinating.
Meaning it's not touchable in the exhibit because it wouldn't survive thousands of people touching it, not that a single person can't/shouldn't touch it.
oh man, when emily asked "is THIS to scale?" about the worms i thought she was kidding and then he sAID YES and now i'm flipping out omg THREE FOOT BLUE WORMS how is this planet even real.
I love seeing what goes on behind the scenes at the museum, and in particular, I really love seeing how creativity is essential to scientific research as well as to the presentation of museum materials, whether it's creating a cool way to catch insects in a field, or building a 3D printer, or sculpting little sea turtles that are durable and can't be stuck in someone's pocket!
Visual and tactile experiences are so incredibly important in education. The folks up in exhibitions need to have a broad understanding of so many different topics to help us figure out the ways in which we can convey the research of our scientists so as to engage the public, and help inspire people to think critically and creatively about the world around them. I LOVE IT
Another light shone into the seemingly endlessly fascinating recesses and roles behind the scenes at a major museum. The eclectic diversity of these subjects is so interesting. You never know what's coming next, just that it's going to be well worth the patient wait.
the "Paradise" Flying Snake...that's a weird name...I would have gone with the "Holy-crap-it's-flying-run-away-who-thought-this-was-paradise" Flying Snake
I don't know if it was just me but it was really cool watching Max's progression throughout the video. It seemed as if with each cut he was visibly more and more comfortable on camera.
I love how much scientific knowledge goes in the creative process of a Replicator. It's amazing how he uses art and science in his job, two things that you wouldn't usually put together. Seeing the models being made, the work environment, and who's behind the models is so cool. As a highschooler, this just widens up my view of what jobs can be like.
That looks like an awesome job! How big is the replicator team (now _that_ kinda sounds like something out of Transformers), and is there some kind of specialisation within the team, like this guy is really good at making fish so let's give him fish, or do you just get literally everything thrown at you?
RC-1290 Other side is the same. Keys work by pushing up a set of pins of specific lengths. So for pins A B C D E F G, they may have a length of 1 4 2 3 5 1 7. This corresponds to how deep each jagged end is. If the jagged ends match up, the pins move out of the way and the key can turn. (Basically; I'm no expert) Theoretically, you can take a blank key of the same style and file down each location of the pins to match the correct key and it will work.
Seb Cox Well, since it is on his neck with some kind of card for work, I am pretty sure it either opens his workshop or somethng else in the museum that he needs access to. Possible the museum itself, though I doubt that.
A replicator was a persistent antagonist in the TV Series "Stargate SG-1". They were crab-like robots that were made of super hard magnetically structured identical fragments.
I love that when Emily sees the giant termite mound, her first thought is "I wish I was an anteater" that is not the reaction you would expect. Also I so want this guys job!
I'd love to do something like this if I ever get my museum studies degree. Right now I'm just carving foam for artifacts nesting with a dremel at my museum. Now nearly as exciting, haha.
Max is really awesome, I always wondered how they made those exhibits and everything, and it's cool to see how they do it. And The Replicator is the best name for a job position ever.
I always wait for the outro, It has brains on it. Loved this episode. Could a future episode be from start to finish. From the developer's sketches to installation would be so cool.
I would love it if you could check back at this department every once in a while, like when there's a big new exhibit coming up or something? It's really interesting to see what they are making and maybe a great way to get people excited about new exhibits? I know I want to see the tiny turtles, but sadly there's an ocean in the way.
Every time I watch a museum video I kick myself in the ass for not sticking with biology in college and doing something like this for a living. Graphic design is fun, but this is my true passion. Time to go back to school.
boomersooner41377 Merchandise, signs, information boards, exhibits, museum guide booklets, adverts, all things you can find at a museum that need graphical designing :)
This looks like a really fun job! this is the kind of thing I want to do. Artistic, but with a purpose beyond just being looked at. Like scene painting for theatre, or creating props for a museum display. I want it.
I'm obsessed with this...it's like fine arts and animals smushed together into one awesome job! If only I'd have known about this when I was little! :)
* lives in Queensland Australia * * has never heard of this terrifying giant blue worm * * casually places machette under pillow * Museums.... YEAH! ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ
This is so cool to learn about one of my home town museums, I had no idea just how much was made there vs imported or something of the like. Though have seen at least plastic cases being made for the science museum, so I assume not every single thing is made in the museum, but not I'm just droning on.....SCIENCE!
I came to TH-cam for a documentary on the history of winemaking, ended up watching Edward Scissorhands, a few polymer clay sculpt tutorials, some stuff about insect pinning... and now I've been binging you guys for like 2 hours. What happened.
That seems like a cool job! I always thought if I didn't have talents in the arts I would of went for zoology, but here both fields mix! I'd love a job in a museum some day, I wanted to go into animation but this seems really cool too.
Aww man working at that Museum must be so cool! now I'm jelly. its so cool to find out all these behind-the-scene things because its often easy to forget someone made these things, keep up the cool videos! =D
The 'Replicators' department could totally justify having their own TH-cam channel, the number of amazing projects they must do on a regular basis must be fascinating.
Heck yeah! I'm a CNC guy myself, and I'd like to see more about what they're running on that machine.
People keep asking how to get a job in a museum, the answer seems to be "get a fine art degree" and sneak in the side entrance.
More like "get any kind of knowledge that can be used in some way in the museum." =)
"Something like this Venus Fly Trap, which is not touchable...."
Emily touches it.
LOLs.
Meaning it's not touchable in the exhibit because it wouldn't survive thousands of people touching it, not that a single person can't/shouldn't touch it.
I mean, she touched it after HE touched it
oh man, when emily asked "is THIS to scale?" about the worms i thought she was kidding and then he sAID YES and now i'm flipping out omg THREE FOOT BLUE WORMS how is this planet even real.

I LOVE IT
'Yeah, this is from Queensland, Australia.'
Me:
Welcome to Queensland. The giant worms are the least of your worries.
+Hillary Rose this shit got me like actually ROFLing
Cool! Not many people probably think about who makes museum displays. Thanks for giving us a look!
Art + Science, Emily you must have had a **field** day!
THIS IS SO GREAT.
Another light shone into the seemingly endlessly fascinating recesses and roles behind the scenes at a major museum.
The eclectic diversity of these subjects is so interesting. You never know what's coming next, just that it's going to be well worth the patient wait.
I have to admit I had to pause this video to look for images of giant, blue earthworms.
Me too, my friend.
I would totally marry this guy.
same and i dont even have boobs
the "Paradise" Flying Snake...that's a weird name...I would have gone with the "Holy-crap-it's-flying-run-away-who-thought-this-was-paradise" Flying Snake
If a country has flying snakes, that is like shorthand for me, saying that I should stay the hell away from there. What's next? Spiders with guns?
More like the If-you-stick-around-this-snake-is-going-to-send-you-to-eternal-paradise Flying Snake
I don't know if it was just me but it was really cool watching Max's progression throughout the video. It seemed as if with each cut he was visibly more and more comfortable on camera.

Great, just when I thought there wasn't anything more to waste time on I have to go back to the museum and look for Easter eggs in the dioramas...
Time spent having fun is not wasted. =)
Can we revisit this department sometime? I would love to see more of their work and how they do their art.
Yea! a new Brain Scoop video, love Emily's shows. What a cool job this guy has, like a movie special effects artist.
Adam Savage (of Mythbusters) would love this place. You should try to get him on the show.
I would destroy whole worlds for this job.
Not important worlds. Useless worlds. Full of forks that aren't strong enough.
I've really been enjoying these videos with different people at the museum and their jobs you don't usually get to see. Thanks for making these!
That looks like an awesome job! How big is the replicator team (now _that_ kinda sounds like something out of Transformers), and is there some kind of specialisation within the team, like this guy is really good at making fish so let's give him fish, or do you just get literally everything thrown at you?
That's a question I have too! I hope Emily answers :)
I have the same questions. Love this so much. This man has my dream job.
.
Oh please oh please make him a regular! This stuff is fascinating!
At 1:14 Max's keys show and you can clearly see the patterns. Keys can easily be copied from images. So you might wanna do something about that.
Good point!
Does it matter that the other side isn't visible?
RC-1290 Other side is the same. Keys work by pushing up a set of pins of specific lengths. So for pins A B C D E F G, they may have a length of 1 4 2 3 5 1 7. This corresponds to how deep each jagged end is. If the jagged ends match up, the pins move out of the way and the key can turn. (Basically; I'm no expert)
Theoretically, you can take a blank key of the same style and file down each location of the pins to match the correct key and it will work.
Do you know what the key shown opens though?
Seb Cox Well, since it is on his neck with some kind of card for work, I am pretty sure it either opens his workshop or somethng else in the museum that he needs access to. Possible the museum itself, though I doubt that.
At that resolution, it would be far easier and cheaper to pick the lock than to copy the key.
The next time I visit a museum, I'll make sure to appreciate the exhibits as art installations as well!
Another awesomely cool job to have at the museum! Thanks Max and Emily!
My inner Star Trek fan thinks "awesome name", my inner Stargate fan thinks "Kill it! Kill it with fire!"
A replicator was a persistent antagonist in the TV Series "Stargate SG-1". They were crab-like robots that were made of super hard magnetically structured identical fragments.
Cat From The Future finally someone said it
The Chicago Field Museum: creating the best job tittles.
I study Industrial Design and I just discovered a new work field, every machine and material I know how to use is there. This makes me happy!
he cute
I love that when Emily sees the giant termite mound, her first thought is "I wish I was an anteater" that is not the reaction you would expect. Also I so want this guys job!
8:42 The awkward nerd conversation was so perfect. lol
amazing! this would be my museum dream job. science, nature, and art all hand in hand. so cool
Dude, something creative AND scientific... I'm really interested in this. Anything that marries art, science, and learning is awesome!
Another intriguing aspect of the Field Museum! Love it!
It's official. Watched all Brain Scoop episodes. And my god. They are all fantastic from the first Montana outtakes to the Field.
I am really blown away about those worms. Crazy. I really love the episodes where we get to go around and meet all the cool people in the museum.
What an amazingly diverse job, never knowing what you'll be building next week!
Growing up in Chicago, I just loved the Field museum, especially (of course!) the dinosaurs. Oh, and the mummies!
Wow it's nice to know there's such an artistic role in science museums!
I'd love to do something like this if I ever get my museum studies degree. Right now I'm just carving foam for artifacts nesting with a dremel at my museum. Now nearly as exciting, haha.
As an artist, I am swooning over the different materials used in these replicas and love hearing a bit about the process.
This is awesome! I love learning about the workings of the museum as well as the actual brain scooping part of The Brain Scoop.
This is such a cool episode. Definitely one of my favorites. I'd love to see more episodes about how they put together an exhibit.
How is that not the cheeriest music ever I'm so ready to learn and as soon as I see Emily's face :3 so beautiful + smart = learning
I love how enthusiastic everyone at the Field Museum is.
There are so many cool jobs at a large museum!
Max is really awesome, I always wondered how they made those exhibits and everything, and it's cool to see how they do it.
And The Replicator is the best name for a job position ever.
I would love that guy's job. Constantly learning and get to be creative all the time...
Wow, that's talent. I'd love to be able to make models like that. Pretty awesome.
+thebrainscoop ok Emily, you & Max look great together. Think of all the interesting dinner conversations 🎈
What a cool job! I never thought about where displays come from before.
Always loving each episode!! I also love how everyone you meet open up throughout the episode and you get to know them better!! =D
That stuff looks liek so much fun to make. Thanks for giving me an amazing case of job envy! xD
A lot of work goes into those museum displays. It's nice to get a chance to see the people who do it and how they work.
I always wait for the outro, It has brains on it. Loved this episode. Could a future episode be from start to finish. From the developer's sketches to installation would be so cool.

What a cool job! Unless you see it you just don't think about that whole side of things!!
Every time I watch a museum video I kick myself in the ass for not sticking with biology in college and doing something like this for a living. Graphic design is fun, but this is my true passion. Time to go back to school.
go for it! *cheerleads*
There should be plenty of ways to use your knowledge of graphic design in a museum. Time to start volunteering at the nearest natural history museum?
You know, that is not a bad idea Nillie, will look into it.
boomersooner41377
Merchandise, signs, information boards, exhibits, museum guide booklets, adverts, all things you can find at a museum that need graphical designing :)
I can't wait for my next visit to Chicago I want to see this exhibit so badly now
This looks like a really fun job! this is the kind of thing I want to do. Artistic, but with a purpose beyond just being looked at. Like scene painting for theatre, or creating props for a museum display. I want it.
You look very professional. Yet funky. Great!
That actually sounds like the coolest job ever. I'm jealous.
One of my favourite videos! Thanks!
I'm obsessed with this...it's like fine arts and animals smushed together into one awesome job! If only I'd have known about this when I was little! :)
* lives in Queensland Australia *
* has never heard of this terrifying giant blue worm *

Museums.... YEAH! ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ
You guys have the coolest jobs! I am so jealous.
I had no idea such a job existed, that looks like so much fun!
OMG! Max and Emily are in loooove!
Haha "I don't even believe that." Reaction to 6ft long worms, my same reaction!
wow, more of this stuff please! this is so cool!
This guy has the coolest job
That looks like an awesome job...
This must love his job, I would be in heaven every day doing that!
Is this life size? What about this? What about this thing, is it life size?
What kind of education did Max have to go through that made him qualified to do this work? This stuff is an amazing combination of art and biology!
That guy has my dream job lol
I just found my dream job
This is so cool to learn about one of my home town museums, I had no idea just how much was made there vs imported or something of the like. Though have seen at least plastic cases being made for the science museum, so I assume not every single thing is made in the museum, but not I'm just droning on.....SCIENCE!
I wish I knew all of these wonderful things BEFORE I visited the Field Museum! :D
Venus fly traps that large would be like Little Shop of Horrors!
FEED ME, SEYMOUR
***** I know what I'm watching tonight!
Omg I'm exctually rehearsing for little shop atm :)
I came to TH-cam for a documentary on the history of winemaking, ended up watching Edward Scissorhands, a few polymer clay sculpt tutorials, some stuff about insect pinning... and now I've been binging you guys for like 2 hours. What happened.
You should put some of those baby turtles in the gift shop :)
That seems like a cool job! I always thought if I didn't have talents in the arts I would of went for zoology, but here both fields mix! I'd love a job in a museum some day, I wanted to go into animation but this seems really cool too.
Now THIS is the museum job I want
This is a job that I didn't know existed and suddenly want.
This woman is freaking awesome. WIsh I knew girls like her
Aww man working at that Museum must be so cool! now I'm jelly. its so cool to find out all these behind-the-scene things because its often easy to forget someone made these things, keep up the cool videos! =D
The perfect mix of smart, hipster, artist, scientist!
MUST NOT SHIP!!!
You two were super cute together. There was definitely a love connection. ;)
Intro sequence still creeps me out
Yeah.
New episodes to be uploaded over the next few months will feature a new intro, fwiw.
Ah, superb
What's creepy about the intro? a stack of shelves and a dinosaur.
proof art and science can mix
That is soooo nifty. Very cool.
Why are all of these behind the scenes guys so cute?! :P
She's beautiful
ah I love how many people at the fm have backgrounds in art, like yes! science is for everyone!
I am a ninja.
What a really cool job.
Seems like such a cool job, I sculpt with polymer clay, mostly miniatures, caning, and jewelry. I’d love to make miniature replicas for a museum
Can I have your job? Science and art.. beautiful blend
