  • Enclosure lighting and how we do it
    Todays video shows the lighting im using for my enclosures to grow the plants in my bio-active setups , we cover installation and use these are very cost effective if a lot of lighting is needed.

    Hi Dave
    Lovely setup you have there.
    I am using similar LED strip lighting on my shelves.It works a threat.Mine is RGBW(RGB +extra white led chips) and that allows me to have only one strip running.They come in warm white(RGBWW)and cool white (RGBW) options .Sets are available with remote control and light intensity option.There are multiple colour variations and intensity options available.
    Now on the plant growing side.
    I have been keeping planted aquariums for the last 20 ish years in that time I have been growing various plants submerged or emersed (out of water) and have been member on various forums with many botanists and ecologist members.
    There is nothing like plant growing lights that is simply marketing for companies to push the sales of their often overpriced products.Plants will utilise whatever light is available and growth will occur if the light source intensity is reaching the individual plant species light compensation point (thats the minimum light intensity required for photosynthesis to occur)White light is more than enough for plant growth.
    I have successfully grown plants under £1.50 white bulbs from any shop that sells them and under £500- £900 fully customisable top of the range multispectral LED sets with equal success. Higher light intensity simply means faster growth rates.
    Keep up the good work pal ;)
    Regards Konstantin

      Hi there ,thats really interesting as I have tried all sorts of white lights and most failed my plants or the plants grew very straggly , I have found with these lights the plants are growing nicely at a steady pace and not getting all leggy im very pleased with the results so far and my moss is doing better too 👍

      Im glad you have results now.
      I am not going to go overboard with this but most likely your previous lights had low PAR ( photosynthetically active radiation)output and(or) not meeting the specific plants light compensation point

    I have something kind of similar for my Ts. They're LEDs, but only the white light since I don't put plants in my enclosures (They're all arid species, so why bother ?) and they're stacked at the middle of the ceiling of the shelves. The light doesn't seem to bother them as they continue to do their thing even when I turn them on. If I ever end needing a huge shelf for a larger collection, I'll definitely use your example. Stay safe and thanks for sharing :)

    These are really great i think with lights the black shelves and inclosure give it a really clean sleek look i didn't know lights could be so small i need to buy growing lights to start my hot peppers and heirloom veggies
    Not sure what i will need yet got to do some research. Its fun to see the changes through time when you follow a youtube person ..really nice thanks for the vid can't wait for the next one.

    I do have a good tip when buying lights for a bioactive enclosure
    Be very carefull with what light you choose
    I set up a bioactive enclosure a couple of months ago and it needed a cfl so I bought a 13W megasun 2.0 this is a brand I only know for making tanning bed lights so I started to doubt if it was actually a good light (before actually using it), so I kept it as a back up and bought a simular cfl from a brand I know for making great reptile products (exo terra) so I installed the light and put two plants in the terrarium (a fern and a Begonia filiosa "var. Miniata"), I did notice the light giving off more heat than a normal 13watt uvb cfl light and it had a yellow colour output, I thought nothing of it but after a few weeks I noticed the fern wasn't really growing (not that strange for a fern) and my begonia was actually getting smaller, a couple of weeks later my fern still wasnt growing and my Begonia was completely gone so I thought there must have been something wrong with the plant so I placed a new Brgonia in the terrarium and the same thing happened, so I got a Monstera because I know they are much hardier and grow much faster than the Begonia, I placed the Monstera in the terrarium and after a couple of days started to notice a lot of leaves dying especially the ones closest to the lamp so I replaced the exo terra lamp with the megasun lamp and directly noticed the difference in colour and heat output and after a few days I started to notice the leaves of my fern and Monstera turning to the light.
    My fern is now actually growing and the Monstera is recovering and producing new leaves I also got a new Begonia and it’s also growing instead of just disappearing.
    So I would advice to always keep an eye on your uvb lights so you know it’s giving off actual uvb and not just uva or uvb-c and don’t just base your lighting choice on the product description and reputation of a brand.

      Sticky led strips do look very good and I heard a lot of good things about them, but they also look like a lot of work when counting in having to replace the plant strip every six months.
      There are some variables in play like the spiders not requiring any uv at all, so the lights should only have around two procent uvb to keep the plants alive (with exemption of plants that require high uv), the plant led strips give off more than two procent uvb this is dimmed by the tanks top mesh and a little bit by plastic on top of the mesh, but it will likely start out above two procent uvb that diminishes over time so this will give them a theoretical lifespan of around a year.
      But you would have to do a measurement to know for sure or, just accept loss of plants an acceptable risk. (I would choose the latter because plants are cheaper than uvb measuring devices)
      You just have to do this over one lifespan to make an accurate assessment of how long the led strips are actually usable.
      I’d actually love to see independent full spectrum light measurements of all lights, just to see how much uvb a light actually gives off and even more important how much uvb-c a light gives off, too much uvb-c kills plants and harms animals and I think this was the case with my exo terra light, I didn’t test it but the leaves closest to the light died first this would likely indicate that there was something in the light killing them.

    Job well done mate 👍... Its gonna be amazing.
    Question ... Could you not just have the plant light ? I am guessing the spiders dont mint it ?

    • @daveslittlebeasties
      @daveslittlebeasties  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes I could the white light is more for me than the spiders and I think the plants may benefit too even if its just a little 👍

  • @FC360D
    @FC360D 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Wish I could find led strips that cheap but I only ever find cheap ones that fail just after warranty, the 1 I have in my living room cost me £25 2 years ago and even that's got 2 led bulbs that have stopped working it was highly recommended too and put me right off led strips as you can't replace a bulb if 1 fails and have to replace the whole thing which sucks. I dunno why some manufacturer don't make a led strip which has the bulbs as modular bulbs which can be removed and replaced just like the older xmas lights.
