Thanks! Ron, Congratulations on three years keep them videos coming. Belated Happy Birthday to your Mom and have a nice holiday with family and Dumpster.
When my son turned four years old, I bought him a train set which was comprised of a 36" circle of track, an engine and a few cars. That was back in 1998. It has since taken over the entire basement. In the process I taught my son, carpentry, how to work with plaster and similar materials, how to work with electricity and a whole bunch of other things. I retired this year and I spend a lot of time on the layout. Thanks to you Ron and a few select TH-camrs, I have been able to tweak things and now I can concentrate on operations instead of trying to get things to work. Ha. Yet another great video. Thanks!
Great Story!! Yes back in the day we learned a lot about "science" and the "trades" by modeling. Glad to hear you passed this down to your Son as well!! Glad to have helped out on your journey :-)
I bought one of those 4-4-0s for my girlfriend last year. She didn't want me to spend too much money, which is why I bought an oldie. It looked great but didn't run with any kind of consistency. It took months of on and off tinkering to get it figured out. I know Ron doesn't have the time for all of that when making videos, so I will share what I have learned. First off, I noticed little lightning bolts jumping back and forth between the motor and inner wheels of the tender when going through corners. I put small washers between the trucks and tender body to raise it slightly and painted the bottom of the motor with liquid electrical tape. That fixed that. To improve contact at the forward truck of the tender, I ran the wire through a hole in the floor and soldered it directly to the washer I had installed. I didn't have to press down on the tender to keep the juices flowing after that. The last thing is to disassemble and clean out the motor. It comes out easily by removing the brass nut behind the motor and then it comes apart like any other pan motor. The motor housing doesn't have any vent holes in it, so dust from the wearing brushes can't escape. Clean that stuff out! Lydia's little "Durant" (she named it after the Thomas Durant character on "Hell on Wheels", not the real guy) runs beautifully now. I hope somebody out there finds this information helpful.
Thanks for the shout out, Ron! I totally would have helped you build that while I was there, too. Thank you also for the hospitality. I am so sorry I was a bit distracted due to the circumstances.
Congrats on 3 years. What a great triumph with that nasty old train and track, too. Face it, man: you're good at this stuff! Oh yeah, almost forgot. 33%er here!
"Lemme get the paint tray- so that way when I knock it over ALL the parts go flying" dang you always get me laughing 😂. Always look forward to a new episode Ron, thanks!!
It just seems a few times I have knocked the paint tray parts bucket and it really makes a mess out of the carefully segregated parts. A few fellers tell me they have done the same ;-)
Ron, you found the famous, legendary, elusive Bachmann "SCRIVETT" - (screw + rivett). Very sought after. It will bring you good luck for the holiday season!!
Thanks Ron! Brought back a bunch of memories of Christmas Train Sets! Although I never owned one, some of my childhood friends did! And it seems that the majority of those were some F Units….it’s been so long ago I can’t remember for sure. So, now I’m gonna try and start a new tradition with my Grandkids. I have an old Athearn “Geep 7” and a few flat cars, I’ll get them in the Christmas Spirit and run them around a tree! Thanks again Ron!
Thanks Chris, Yes these little Bachmann's are kinda a P.I.T.A. either there great runners or there's nothing you can do to make them good runners it seems.
@@classicmodeltrains Yep, my son loves this little guy but it is such a weird runner. Only likes high power and after about 5-10 minutes of running the motor gets a bit angry and needs to cool off for a little. And that wire that goes from the cab to the engine in such a nightmare piece to keep attached. Definitely researching trying to find a more friendly motor.
Ron another fantastic restoration video with a fantastic model shown as well! That's one of my favorite Christmas movies. You're the best with these posts!
Congrats on 3 years Ron. I love the fact that you know if you use the parts tray that just means you'll have to look for every teeny tiny part when you knock over the tray. Placing the open container of liquid right next to the keyboard, you are copying my moves. Enough of the tom foolery. Great job getting the 4-4-0 running right and making that janky track work better. Here's hoping you have the Merriest of Christmas and many many more anniversaries for your channel. Happy Birthday to Ron's Mom
You truly are the fix m detective of model trains . A little clue here, a little lube there, a little him-hawen, more investigation and there you go. Problems solved and a great looking running addition for the Christmas tree. Keep them coming Ron. You make Mondays something to look forward to.
Watching Ron work on trains and run them is a reminder of my youth. Since watching, I have purchased cars from him and 3 locomotives I saw on Ebay. I now have a Marx Pennsylvania F-3, the Air Force EMD diesel and a Tyco #473 4-6-2 steam locomotive (if it ever arrives). Ron's channel makes the economy better and me poorer. Trains are wonderful. Thanks Ron.
Reminder of our youth.....Thats what I think all the time fiddling with the trains. Of course the rememberries are better than the actual story and my paper route makes a heck of a lot more money now then it did back then !!!
When I was growing up, our family Christmas tree always had an HO scale train running underneath it on brass track. It was a 3.5' by 4' sheet of 1/2 inch plywood with the track attached with a STAPLE GUN. The staples were not shot into the plastic ties, but over them with the length of the staple running centered in between and parallel to the rails. This worked just fine for years, and they were easy to pull up one year when the mint-green painted plywood sheet got a big upgrade to that "grass mat" sheet of green sawdust glued to a roll of paper scenery item that was sold by Life-Like. This was no flimsy set up, as the plywood sheet was placed on the living room floor with an 8' or so real tree stuck into one of those stamped metal, three-footed tree stands which was nailed to the center of the plywood. The tree lights were a long, heavy strand of C7 bulbs. It all worked out just fine, as long as the tree was kept watered without overfilling that tiny tree stand metal water dish, and don't forget to toss a couple aspirin into the water, for some reason.
Congrats on the Anniversary Sir! As always Great Video and Amazing work to get the old beauty going! Super Lube to the rescue once again! Best Train Channel on TH-cam!

Happy Anniversary! Hard to believe only three years of putting out great videos. Thanks for sharing. Brass track works but it needs a lot of cleaning. It oxidizes rapidly and the oxidation does not conduct electricity. Merry Christmas to you and your family! Happy Birthday Mom!
Great job on bringing the set back to life and giving it a purpose once again 👍 I like the set up for measuring the car length and what the weight should be without using my fingers. Happy Birthday Mom and a Merry Christmas to you guys. 🎄

Hi Ron. Well first off Happy Anniversary 🎉. Also all the best to your Mother on her birthday 🎂 Nice to see you have no snow, we got freezing rain today 😬. Nice little train set today, good job. The only thing that let it down was the track connections, good eye to catch that. Seemed to run great after that fix. I thought I could hear it kinda making chugging sounds . Nice you got a Christmas tree and a light show for it. Go 33%ers. Chat again soon buddy, Cheers G.
Happy birthday, momma Ron! Three year anniversary for the channel, wow. I think I 've seen most of the past videos but might still be a few I haven't. Maybe when I get some more downtime over the holidays. Could not place the name of the model this week, but the face I knew and where from. Pretty lady, died young. (ish) Man, when you were talking up the brass track, I was like "oh no, you didn't..." but yes you did. And I see you regretted it just a tad later on. LOL Then you had to go and tell a story about letting that old train run around the tree again, getting us all teary eyed. (or was it just me?) Now I'm going to have to get out my dad's old Lionel that hasn't seen the light of day in probably a good 40 years. Great video and thoroughly enjoyed it, as always. 😊
I have that Tyco Track Layout Expander set that the manual comes in. I found it at a local antique store... Cool that it showed up in an old Bachman set on your show.
@classicmodeltrains Minor disclaimer, it was actually my wife that found it, and talked me into buying it.. full set complete in box. Gotta love a woman that supports your hobbies! 👍
Congratulations on your 3 year anniversary. I have a similar Bachmann set, plastic wheels were worped so I put metal wheel sets on them, kinda light weight but they track good. I had 2 locomotive parts to get 1 to work, nope. Plastic was too brittle, too many things went wrong. I got some parts off Bachmann website and made my own 2-6-0. There new parts site is pretty amazing, and have something dependable to pull my old west bachmann cars with. Pretty sweet… Merry Christmas Ron…
Greetings from Canada 🇨🇦…great video…congratulations on your third anniversary…the old brass track works well, when clean…which is a never ending job…BTW, need some snow?😊
Hey Ron, I remember the video from the guy who came from Canada, It's a great video...I have around four 4-6-0 and four 4-4-0 Locomotive. They are really good-looking and running now after I worked on them from your videos to learn how....Thanks, Ron
Hey Ron and Merry Christmas. Enjoyed the rebuild of that set. Congrats on those 3 years. I came along around 1k subscribers. Now you're pushing 20k. You do good content brother. Best of all of the others. Got a little behind on viewing your stuff but I'm catching up. Take care...G
Hey Ron, thanks for another great video. I know Shadow from my neck of the woods. I noticed your collection of bicentennial Tyco items in your display rack. I too have started collecting the bicentennial Tyco trains. I don’t have the collection you have, but always looking for a good deal. Keep up the great work. 33%!!
When I see what set you had I said Oh No! You were lucky it had all the parts for the loco especially the drive shaft and you had a good gear but if you need a new coal car, I'm sure I have one around here some were. Great work and video, Jersey Bill
Congratulations Ron on your 3rd anniversary. very nice Christmas tree train I once had the same locomotive, unfortunately I was stupid enough to sell it

Thank you William!
I have that Tyco Track Layout Expander set that the manual comes in. I found it at a local antique store... Cool that it showed up in an old Bachman set on your show.
You have the actual set? COOL!!! Found in an antiques store? Even BETTER!!!
@classicmodeltrains Minor disclaimer, it was actually my wife that found it, and talked me into buying it.. full set complete in box. Gotta love a woman that supports your hobbies! 👍
Love the channel by the way.
Pretty sweet…
Merry Christmas Ron…
Thank you John, Sounds like a pretty cool loco you built up there. Merry C to you and yours as well

Greetings S.T. Yup I decided to collect some red, white, and blue stuff. Working on getting the new display all set up before I put focus on it.
Good one😊
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
When I see what set you had I said Oh No! You were lucky it had all the parts for the loco especially the drive shaft and you had a good gear but if you need a new coal car, I'm sure I have one around here some were. Great work and video, Jersey Bill
Thanks Jersey B! I was surprised it had all the parts and worked as well :-)
