    There’s just something about seeing an old man cry about a brother that died decades and decades ago, 25 years before I was even born…

    All three only just started their careers and their few records were the BEST. It is unfathomable to imagine if all three had continued making records. Imagine the music we never got to hear!

    Have seen Maria Elena and Larry speak a dozen times on this with no tears. I think as you get older, things creep up on you. Maybe you never stop grieving or processing. One day you're okay with it, twenty years later or 70 years later, you can't handle it.

      Sometimes she can live with it, sometimes she can't, maybe. Speculation on a stranger's feelings. It probably catches her off guard sometimes, the overwhelming tragedy of Buddy and just how much life he missed out on. You become more aware of time the older you get, and I think that plays on the emotions. Buddy was just a kid, really. As the lives of those who personally knew Buddy all wind down, I wonder if they think of him often. I wonder if it's one of those things where the phone rings fairly often with people wanting to get an interview or something, so that constant, expected reminder is there. I wonder if it's harder when something unexpectedly reminds her of Buddy...a song on the radio, walking by a music shop, or smelling a food they used to eat together. Times when those memories of Buddy are involuntary thrust upon her and she's forced to confront losing him. It's gotta be hard growing so old, facing the fact that someone you loved was stolen away so young, so long ago.
      Maria Elena has lived several lifetimes now since Buddy died. Must be a real strange feeling.

      @@tpfmike1976 I don't know, why did the plane wreckage disappear like the plane wreckage after hitting the Pentagon? The guy created the rock and roll band the way it is today as far as lead guitar, rhythm, bass and drums and was moving towards becoming his own producer, probably affording a few friends the ability to get out of their crappy contracts also. I'm sure that was a motivating factor. Seeing that he had beef with Ed Sullivan also is quite interesting as he seemed to be the guy to go through for fame. Buddy got famous without a contract, made him rogue. Rock and roll is a church in this country and they sacrificed truth for spellcraft. Rock and roll wasn't even supposed to be around very long.

  • @stevewilson3793
    @stevewilson3793 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The strangest thing to me is there were only two people to be certain to be on that plane that night,and that was the pilot and Buddy Holly. The other two earned their seats by acts of fate. The Big Bopper who was sick with the flu according to accounts got his seat from Waylon Jennings on the tarmac for his, and Ritchie bugged another musicianr on this tour all the night of and eventually flipped a coin to earn his seat on the plane..His name I do not recall. This now seems strange. But travelling on a bus with a broken heater, in the mid west , middle of night in the midst of winter, I guess there were a lot of musicians who would have vied for a seat on Buddy's plane?

    • @thedarkknight1357
      @thedarkknight1357 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Um no, Ritchie was afraid of flying so he wouldn't just bug Tommy Allsup all night for his seat. Ritchie really had to think about it after being pushed to the edge after the bus kept on constantly breaking down and that's when he decided to take a chance and fly out with Buddy and the rest. Get this fact right at least dude.

    Sorry, but Deon’s story doesn’t collaborate with the others. According to the others that were there, Buddy did not charter the plane just for the headliners. He charted that plane for himself and his band members Waylon Jennings and Tommy Allsup. Waylon gave his seat to JP Richards and Tommy lost a coin flip to Ritchie. I don’t believe Deon was ever offered a seat on that plane.

    It seems that if they weren’t chartered bottom-of-the-barrel buses to get them between shows, it never would have happened. They were freezing, had broken down multiple times, and after that they were tired of not having clean clothes. Take away the breakdowns, the freezing cold and if they were procured a comfortable, warm bus that was able to tolerate the winter weather, it seems unlikely their desire for clean clothes would have been enough to make them decide to charter a small plane, especially with Valens’ dislike of flying. But that’s how it was then, and I’m sure now to a lesser extent- you’re a music producer/promoter, you find a young talent, and you work them to the brink while extracting as much money from their gift as possible. They often received a pittance compared to what their label was making off them. So it makes sense they had them in the cheapest possible transportation. That might have been fine in any season but the winter.

    • @aurouratrashworthy8680
      @aurouratrashworthy8680 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Beginning to lean towards 'planned' on a lot of fronts with this. The real story for me is the heater on the bus, absolutely. Put a couple of guys from warm climates on a bus at negative temps in the midwest for 25 days straight and watch what happens. The story isn't the coin flip and / or who's lying. It's why Buddy was murdered.

    • @jackcraig4268
      @jackcraig4268 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some of the people in the music business were real pond scum. Buddy Holly wasn’t getting paid anything by Norman Petty; that’s why he needed the cash and went on that tour. And this was after Petty had attached his name to almost all of the songs Holly had written, even though he hadn’t written a note. And years later, Jim Croce’s widow had to fight tooth and nail to get money for all the songs Jim had written….
