Barbie was always an advertisement for toys and Mattel trying to be relevant again “look barbie isn’t an archaic representation of what a woman is anymore she’s cool and modern! Buy our fucking toys now!”
@@colonialstraits1069 So people aren’t allowed to be entertained by anything that is made by a coorperation? People should be ashamed to watch a geniunely enjoyable piece of art because it has suits behind it?

From what I remember, this also happened after the Lego Movie, but a lot of those announced movies never went anywhere. I doubt a lot of these will either.
I saw on Twitter they are looking at making a god damned play-doh movie. The suits running these film studios and funding creation of IP films are so god damned stupid. One of the lessons for the movie industry from this Barbiessance was “audiences want good, fun, (semi-)original content that doesn’t tie into a multiverse and has a good plot”, yet here they are doing the opposite. Audiences are not allowed to just have a good time at the movies anymore, we HAVE to buy toys and miscellaneous merch even a lot of kids do not have use for. They refuse to understand that all these IP universe franchise rebooquels are exhausting for a lot of people. Not everything needs to be an MCU copycat - and the way it’s looking, Marvel is running out their welcome, too. And even though they make good money from merch, not every film - even the decades-old IPs like Barbie - need to or will experience a rush to buy toys and movie tickets to 89 sequels no one asked for.

I think its mostly a speculation strategy, most of these suggested ideas won't make it very far because people don't like being marketed to and an overtly commercial style is not enjoyable. but they get to gauge viewer sentiment basically for free, and they show their business is willing and able to speculate for profit. they also get to determine the cultural revelance of these "historic" products and how these items have influenced people, and how they may continue to influence people- what they symbolise, what they mean etc. so I dont think its wise to automatically assume that all movies will be regurgitative toy adverts, this is just one arm of a corporate performance that drives revenue, but many other avenues still exist and will be utilised. this strategy has been used many times before the barbie movie to great success or great failure

Holy shit you’re pretty
I don't know why everyone is say mattel instead of film studios as if it Mattel is usually in the business of producing movies and needed to learn this lesson. It's the studios.
I cannot live in a world where my favorite toys get more movies made by sad older women and men who never played with the toys.
