1956 capelet cape
I'm 66 years old and learned to knit and crochet as a child. Until this year, the only "blocking materials" I've ever used were my ironing board, iron, straight pins, a flower sack kitchen towel and a spray bottle. After a 10 year hiatus from doing any knitting or crocheting, I was stunned to see all the shiny gadgets and tools being marketed as "must haves." Almost done with this pattern in a fingering weight angora acrylic blend -- I absolutely love it but then I'm a sucker for vintage patterns and fine crochet. Great channel!!

Hey, lovely howthis one turned out, did y know that blokking acrylic yarn is quick and easy, just position your peace on a flat surface, with this one it but difficult, but hold your blowdryer just above one spot of a couple of inches en pres and turn on your crocheted peace and flattend it like this with your hand, just let it cool down and take the next peace, and so on, really easy, i am Dutch so its a bit difficult to write the proper way, sorry for that.

I think this could be blocked ironing it in a very low heat, you can also use a cloth on top to make sure is not too hot. Since its acrilic its quite easy
3 steel is 2.1 mm. 2steel is 2.25 mm or B/1 if that helps

The drape of Premier Bamboo Fair is so amazing with this cape!!! Truly-it’s a #3 also, 273 yards/100 grams/3.5 oz. TRULY TRULY TRULY MUST DO using this yarn-it’s amazingly beautiful.

I made a 1950-something pineapple doily where the outer pineapples were finished individually, and I've seen a few others that do the same, so I think that may have been a common way of making pineapple items in the 50s? 🤷🏻♀️ It was a little tedious, but the finished look made it all worth it.
For blocking, in general, an old yoga mat and some cardboard makes a plenty sufficient blocking board, especially for something that's long, like this capelet. And any sewing pins will work, they don't have to be T pins, they just have to hold. When blocking acrylic, if you pin it out, then steam it with an iron by holding the iron above the yarn and pressing the steam button - DO NOT iron on the acrylic yarn (or a garment steamer if you have one) it is better than wet blocking. It also happens to be much faster, as well, since you don't have to wait a couple days for everything to dry.
I hope you are lucky to sell these lovely items. If you’re the lady that made the beautiful dress with pink ribbons, fantastic job. I knit but not crochet. Now, old mean arthritis is in my fingers so not doing so much anymore.
You don't need fancy blocking stuff. I use a large piece of cardboard, like from a washer box, and straight pins. I cover the cardboard with a couple of sheets of plastic wrap large enough to accommodate the item being blocked. I do put a little starch in the soaking water. It does help repel dirt and dust so that your item doesn't need to be washed every time its used. Especially good for doilies. To remove dust I place the items in the dryer with a damp washcloth. Works great for draperies as well.
I’m used to crocheting w/heavier yarns and a bigger hook size so this will be a challenge. I’m sad because our nanny used to crochet doilies and fine, fingerling weight items. How I wish I would have asked her to teach me! She was so wonderful I know she would have but I was too busy being a Tom boy.
Oh- 4.5 hook I use those and 3 weight yarn as well. Getting used to the smaller hook will be my challenge but I’ve been wanting to try. At 64- let’s teach this old dog a new trick! 😉

I never blocked years ago but I started knitting and learned that blocking makes a huge difference in both crochet and knitting. Please give it a try you will never not block again

I definitey have tp make this because one big reason.....This pattern came out the year I was born! On top of that it is very beautiful. I can imagine a beautiful 1950's cocktail dress that it is worn with. But it would make a wonderful bedjacket for when it gets a little chill in rhe room.
BRAVO! Nutella is totally adorable❤ Vintage/antique crochet is my jam. Through most of 1800s, plain crochet = sc in back loop, double crochet = sc through both loops. The use of double crochet being a method v a stitch is very confusing & can result in vastly different end piece.
Victorian patterns rarely follow using the hook/yarn size rules of today. Skinny yarn BIG hook

I have an old steel hook, brand name Boyle on it. I think I got it from my grandmothers things when she passed. I’ve been using it since early 1990’s. It’s marked 15 cents.

I love how you show pattern instructions and then perform the stitch. I have a hard time transcribing the pattern into production. It really takes more than knowing what the abbreviations mean.

Blocking can be done on an opened up cardboard box with a towel over it and sewing pins. All the special equipment is not necessary.

If you want to block it? You can take carboard and a beach towel to make a blocking board. Take large black paperclips to hold your towel to the cardboard, then just lay your garment out and pin 😉👍. (Yes, you can block Acrylic..) I think this Cape is so pretty, thank you Corinna for all your time in this project.❣

As far as blocking goes effusive carpet pieces you put together like a puzzle flipping ovary perfect blocking board and they're not expensive I paid $8 for about 6 and they work great

I “block” acrylic with a wet cloth and an iron (proper setting for acrylic). It might get rid of your fuzziness. I do it on an ironing board with a towel and safety pins.
I made 3 - the 1st was in cotton it was beautiful the pattern was so clear. the next 2-- I made in wool, it was not as pretty, the pattern didn't show up as well. This pattern is quick and easy. Yes its the pineapple stitch as the cotton one shows it very well.

This has been super helpful. I am just winging it to make myself a bed coat using up scrap yarn and decided that this pattern would be great for my sleeves.
Once I am done with my sleeves I want to go ahead and come back to do the whole pattern.

I learned to crochet during the '60's. This pattern is one year younger than me. I remember doing the pineapple pattern. I used cotton as doilies were the "crochet hot item". Crochet garment patterns were very rare. Ive been learning knitting on YT the last 2 years. Looking for a shoulder cowl for my spaghetti strap summer dresses. I really love your vintage crochet works it is fantastic an am avid fan of yours.
Another great video! I don't use any equipment to block my crochet. I just get it wet and press it in a towel to get most of the water out, then spread it over the back of my sofa or the arm of the sofa if it is just a small piece. Then I gently pull it into shape horizontally, letting it drape over the slope of the padded sofa so that gravity helps a bit to stretch it vertically. I fiddle a bit to shape all the little scallop edges etc...and make sure it is still stretched out along each direction. Depending what type of thread I use it might air dry in a couple of hours, or overnight. I don't find it necessary to pin it or anything but that is always an option, pinning it to the surface. I have also done this on my bed with the blankets I've made which needed more space. It always looks so much better after blocking.

I’ve never used this small yarn/hook but I received some bamboo thread/yarn awhile a go. I’m going to try! Thanks to you! I cannot believe how tiny the chains/stitches are! The pattern may be from 1956 but when I had my first child in 1975 my mom made me this cape to wear when I was breast-feeding. She was really into pineapple design because I still have 8 pineapple doilies. Fast forward to 2001, my daughter took the same cape and put on her when she was breast feeding her son....to keep her Italian father-in-laws prying eyes away!!! LOL!! Not the best cover but at least the baby can breath through the holes. Love that pattern although I never attempted it!!

I love this pattern a lot! In Italy, one of my first works (I was very very young and in the 70s) was with the pineapple stitch. Fun fact: the name is due to how the stitch is made to look like a piece of pineapple (when you look at the skin with the pointy needles), and not the design of a pineapple. At least, that is how I was taught back then. I now want to go and dig out all the Italian patterns from my childhood and redo them! But, I'll save this cape pattern cause it is so gorgeous that I want to make my own. Thank you for sharing!

Applause, applause! I stopped using Caron Simply Soft because it is so splitty, and it can't hold a knot to save it's life. If the knots would hold I would have overlooked the splittiness, but being able to stay together when changing colors matters more. This is really lovely. Good job! Oh, for those of you don't have or can't afford blocking boards, at least invest in some rust-proof T-pins, and use flattened down cardboard boxes! I flatten out an old Amazon box, spritz or dampen the work with water, and pin into place. It works! Hugs

I have never found a pineapple pattern that I didn't love. I love this one also and yes i found out early about having to start and finish each pineapple separately but always worth it. This is on my summer list to do as soon as I finish my current afghan. Thanks for all these vintage tutorials.

Beautiful. I love the ruffles but honestly, you don't have to have blocking materials to block. You need to soak the cape in hot water and using your hands to work the water through the piece until fully saturated. Then gently squeeze the water out. Very gently. Do not wring. Use a heavy bath towel on a table and spread it out with no wrinkles in it. Next, place the cape on the towel in the blocking position and use long sewing needles to secure. Let it dry completely. If there are crocheted-in ruffles, the ruffles should be blocked in their natural position. I hope this helps. We do not always need all the items on the market to do the job.
