Corrida Performance - Maxwell Alexandre | Brazil, the untold story

In Corridas, the artist films himself running through inside the spaces in which he lives and works in the Rocinha, seeking to register, by using CCTV style cameras, the places in which his life has been temporarily confined. Boxes, unfinished and finished mural paintings, work materials and furniture all become more evident as the cameras capture the artist exercising while performing at the same time. This particular piece reveals Maxwell Alexandre’s sense of discipline and focus as he reassess what to do during an unsettling period in which scheduled commitments such as traveling, installing exhibitions, finishing artworks and other projects were being halted or rescheduled in light of the pandemic. The artist’s world seems to have been reduced to its absolute core: his art practice. The performance alludes to the realities of many people, especially those living in small crowded spaces, during challenging circumstances, but in this case, Maxwell Alexandre is claiming these spaces for himself, in spite of the physical limitations and adversities. He secures his own ‘territories’ by leaving his marks in each room of his atelier, office space and residential flat. Yet again, demonstrating his resilience and resolve to continue to inventively capture his own existence and the world around to him.

A performance Corridas, Maxwell Alexandre filma-se correndo dentro dos espaços nos quais ele vive e trabalha na comunidade da Rocinha, registrando enquanto utilizando de câmeras tipo CCTV, os lugares de confinamento durante a pandemia. Caixas, pinturas concluídas e não terminadas, materiais de trabalho e mobília, tornam-se visíveis enquanto as câmeras captam o artista exercitando-se enquanto executa performance. Esta obra revela o senso de disciplina e foco enquanto ele reflete o que fazer diante desta condição instável provocada pela pandemia, quando compromissos como viagens a trabalho, exposições, trabalho, instalações são temporariamente paralisados por conta da pandemia. A vida e o mundo do artista parecem ter sido reduzidos ao absolutamente essencial: sua obra artística. Esta performance alude às realidades de muitas pessoas, especialmente pessoas vivendo em espaços pequenos em circunstâncias extremamente difíceis, mas neste caso, Maxwell Alexandre está reclamando esses espaços para si mesmo, apesar das limitações físicas. O artista assegura seus territórios deixando suas marcas em cada espaço de seu ateliê, escritório e apartamento, demonstrando sua resiliência e determinação para continuar a registrar sua própria existência e o mundo ao seu redor.
