On his TV show "This Is Tom Jones" in the late '60s to early '70s, Tom Jones performed duets with a lot of the soul and rock & roll icons of '50s and '60s. In addition to his duet with Little Richard, his duets with Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Wilson Pickett, Smokey Robinson, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Janis Joplin were particularly memorable.
Video clips of all of these duets are available on TH-cam, and I recommend that you react to them.

Little Richard : “I am the innovator. I am the originator. I am the emancipator. I am the architect of rock ‘n’ roll.” I believe him. He charged right through the 1950s. (he is right up there with Elvis and Chuck Berry) Little Richard had more energy than anybody ever. Out of control performer

I love Richard's music, but Ive always had a problem with how he bragged about being those things you mentioned. No one man can lay claim on creating Rock & Roll. Alot of men tried to take credit for it, but it was a group effort by many men and even a few women. The only man that never took credit for his own contribution was Elvis, and if anybody had more of a reason to make those claims than anybody else, it would have been him. Elvis didnt invent Rock & Roll, but if not for the addition of his Country influence to Blues and Gospel, it would have remained R&B.

Being a 77 year old guy, when someone mentions Rock'n"Roll, this is exactly what comes to mind. Along with Elvis, The Everly Brothers and a few others, this was the foundation to the soundtrack of my youth. I regret not hearing this duet previously as it'll now surely occupy a premium spot on my playlist. I was a fan of Little Richard from the start and while knowing that Tom Jones had an exceptional voice, this duet displayed a dimension I hadn't heard before. Additionally, having seen and heard Little Richard perform countless times, I think the addition of Tom Jones allowed Little Richard to find a new gear on this performance.

Tom Jones had a great variety show from 69 - 71 & had some of the biggest music stars at the time. This was a fun duet with Little Richard doing a medley of his hit songs. He had a lot of great songs such as “Good Golly, Miss Molly”, “Tutti-Frutti”, “Long Tall Sally", “Lucille”, “Ready Teddy”, “Slippin’ & Slidin'” etc.

Little Richard was one of the founders of rock and roll. His music may be based in gospel but he developed it into rock and roll along side of Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, and all the other greats. He also became a pastor at one point so maybe he was a pastor at this time which would explain his robe.

Oh yeah. It was 1957, I was 6 years old, and around that time, my brothers brought home Little Richard singles on 7 inch. Songs like Long Tall Sally and Rip It Up. And we played them on my sisters Dansette record player. And that fantastic time echoes in my mind and soul for ever.

He might be wearing a choir robe. He might also be wearing a cape. Little Richard's costumes knew no bounds :) And that's what early rock and roll sounded like, it had a lot more soul because a lot of it was lifted from the very rhythms of the soul movement that Little Richard did so well.

Hahaha! Girl, this IS rock-n-roll!!!! It's different from what most younger people know as "rock". Sometime around the late 60s/early-70s it all changed from rock-n-roll to just rock. The "roll" was the "soul"! The soul of the raw simplicity of the music and the emotion behind it. In my opinion, even the Beatles played rock-n-roll in the beginning of their career but EVERYTHING changed when they came out with the "Sgt. Pepper" album. The genre grew up in a rapid spurt of evolution and became much more sophisticated musically.

They have boys choirs that are world renowned. Tom is the best of them. Little Richard though is in a league of his own. He could sing tue ingredients on a cereal box and it would be amazing.

Yeah, these are the roots of 1950s rock 'n roll, rockabilly, etc. Blues, gospel, rock all came together in one amazing delivery. Little Richard, Elvis Jerry Lee Lewis,, Chuck Berry were the pioneers and they all were singing these kinds of songs. LIttle Richard and Chuck wrote their own material, which was covered by just about everyone. Doesn't get any better or more primitive than this.

Rock and Roll did a lot of finding itself in the 50s and early 60s. It wasn't firmly defined, and crossed over a lot with country at the time. A lot of it was upbeat and innocent, guys singing about weeping all night and women being forward with their men. It ranged through Doo Wop and blues sounds, simple harmonies, and humorous medley.

It was Tom's show but he always matched his guests but never tried to outshine them. He seems to take genuine delight in their abilities. You should check out his duet with Janis Joplin (it will definitely give you austin powers vibes) groovy dancing baby! 😂 little Richard was discovered by Sister Rosetta Tharpe and you should definitely check out that lady if you're not already aware of her. You got it right, Britt. Early Rock 'n' Roll, pre-Beatles and the groups, When I was first reading about various groups described as Classic Rock I couldna understand it because I had in mind the likes of Elvis, Little Richard, Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee, even Fats Domino. That to me is classic Rock.
As you liked this you would certainly like the Tom Jones/Jerry Lee duet medley from another one of Tom's TV shows around 1970. There is also on YT a brilliant duet of Tom with Ella FitzGerald singing "Sunny". A brilliant version of the song. Duetting with Little Richard, Jerry Lee and Ella - tremendous, brilliant versatility.
