Just passed my open water and I feel I owe Alec a big thank you, I have taken so much useful information from him and his wonderful videos that I feel I know far more than I would have done if I hadn't discovered him. Cheers Alec, if you ever come to the UK again then chocolate cakes are on me!
The apeks mouth pieces are very nice and comfortable too. I find the round top part that holds it behind your teeth works very well at stopping fatigue.
Just wanted to say thank you for all your vids. Your tips are welcome and very well taken. I’m an old diver that’s making a comeback in to this great hobby. 👍.
I think we need to clarify our descriptions of "old divers". There are divers who've been diving a long time. They are now officially called 'old divers'. A long time should be at least 25 years. And there are divers who are not young. They are now called 'senior divers'. Not young should mean at least 70 years of age. Welcome back from an old, senior diver! Alec
my mares abyss came with a horrible mouthpiece, i had to bite for dear life. i got the comfort piece that you have in that video. much better. no more jaw fatigue, even with a heavy 2nd stage.
Just came back from Malaysia for a 6 days dive trip. Did 10 boat dives with amazing boat crew. My kraken regulator worked beautifully ! My jaw was happy and nice :))))
Great tip Alec! I do think you need to keep that yellow plug in when dipping the mouthpiece in hot water so that the part that attaches to the regulator does not deform.
I really love the comfo bite mouth piece from aqualung. Ive bought other comfobite style mouthpieces before, but they were really flimsy and it was almost like i was biting through jello.
The Comfo-Bite mouthpiece was patented by Aqua-Lung a long time ago. They put in on their regs as an added "feature". I personally don't like it. The flap touching my palate irritates me. But some like it. It's worth a try if you're having issues with your current mouthpiece. Alec
New to diving ,am PADI o w certified.Really like Your videos. And am Thankful for your tips and info. I believe the more You know about something, the better off You are. Thank You.
I use to get jaw fatigue and a head ache ever time I dove . I got a sea cure mouthpiece and fixed all my problems. Well worth the money for the comfort difference it made
@diver dave Interesting opinion, thanks. Yeah, I actually used an Ocean Reef Neptune on my last liveaboard and loved it. Also, I didn't notice any significant increase in my air consumption. Then again, I wasn't chatting with my buddy the entire time either, just when necessary. However, having the ability to talk to my buddy underwater when needed was 100% worth the investment.
I bought me some of those mouthpieces and mounted them to my reg. I would never expect the difference to be that big! Anyone concidering whether You should buy one or not - just do it, You won't regret! Just be sure to mold it correctly ;) if You're not afraid to buy such things from China there are some cheaper alternatives available on Ali...ress, they cost like 6-7$ if my memory doesn't fail.
The genuine Sea Cure mouthpiece is probably closer to $20 but still a bargain once you have it in your mouth. $20 - that's like 4 air fills for comfort and safety forever. Alec
i use mouldable mouth pieces and find them so comfortable ,much better than the standard mouth pieces that come with your regs, even my save a dive kit has a couple in the box pre moulded to my mouth
Sea cure is an awesome solution, great video, i use to use it when i was doing recreational diving. Ever sice started sidemount and now using Apeks Sidemount Regs they are amusing fit and comfort. Out of the box no need to modify anything, the mouth pieces are the best i ever used.
I get jaw fatigue, but it’s pretty much entirely down to my hood. I use the hood that came with my Santi dry suit, and it felt way too tight, and really caused jaw fatigue. It’s better now, because I have stretched it, and even cut material off. My latest improvement was a hole at the top of the head, where I can pull out a hair braid, so that my fairly thick hair doesn’t take up room in the throat area. Before that I used to fantasise about cutting it all off every time I would go diving (here in Sweden, where thick hoods are standard, at least).
I really can't relate to your hair braid Janaina. My hair style is perfect for scuba diving LOL. I do know about the tight hoods though. I modified one by cutting open the throat and then adding a Velcro flap to keep water out. That worked really well. Alec
You do have the perfect hair style for thick hoods! I keep wanting to cut all of mine off when I go diving, but I have a very round head, and I’m afraid I’d look like a beach ball. What type of Velcro is water tight?
I often have a similar fatigue issue. After breathing through the regulator for a while, the valve in the back of my throat that shuts off the air to my nasal passage, gets tired. It becomes more and more difficult to keep that passageway closed so my mask isn't compressing and expanding with every breath. I know, weird, right? :-) As always, a fun and informative video. I always pick up some neat ideas from your channel.
Right on the money here thanks Alec. Mouth fatigue (and dry throat) both issues for me. Question: would it be feasible for me to change over and back to my own better quality mouthpiece when using dive shop hire gear?
While it's a nuisance, I can't see any dive shop refusing to allow a scuba gear renter to use his own mouthpiece. It's a 1-minute job to change and costs nothing. If this is going to be a regular thing, why not take along a dozen Zip-Ties and a small pair of diagonal cutters (or box cutter) and suggest that you will change the mouthpiece yourself. Alec
Hi Alec. I'm just wondering How can I clean up a mouth piece? specially when some diver used my regulator or alternate Air source. I want to be clear what I want to know if there is any product or way to disinfect a mouth piece. Let me know please
That'll work Brian. Any disinfectant or sanitizer (Lysol?) or even alcohol will do the job. Heck, use mouthwash!! There is a product for scuba mouthpieces called Sterisol from Trident Dive. Most dive stores will have something similar. Alec
I doubt it. Dry mouth is caused by dry air. Dry air is good for divers - other than causing dry throat. Try drinking extra water before the dive and right after. You can also suck on a lozenge of your choice even while diving. It may feel odd at first but there's no reason why not. Hope this helps. Alec
Hi Alec, new diver here, was drawn to your video recently and subscribed, your video are amazing. One question here, I had bad jaw fatigue during my first few dive, I saw my instructor have this 360 degree swivel thingy connected to his second stage, are those effective to help with jaw fatigue as well?
There are a few videos about swivels - You might find there the answer to Your question. Watch the videos about hoses, regulator comparations and generally about the regs.
I have talked quite a bit, recently in fact, about swivels. I'm not crazy about them generally but to answer your question, I don't believe they would have any effect, good or bad, on your jaw fatigue. Alec
thank u alex on your tech tips i really love enjoying and learning from u i wanna no more with u last month i was snorkling in ginnie springs in florida and i think it was a gator cause it ripped my fin off me
I've never seen nor heard of anything. I DO know several divers who also have no teeth. They seem to make out OK. I'll have to ask them how they solved the problem. Alec
also to alex i wanna ask u question when im snorkling my chest gets very tight when i have snorkle in what can cause that and what can i do to help that would u suggest running to help build my lungs up im not a smoker
If this is happening as you snorkel along the surface, it would be odd. I can only suggest anxiety is causing your muscles to tense. If it's happening when you dive down, it may simply be the pressure of the water. Unlike scuba, while snorkelling there is no air pressure on the inside of your lungs to counteract the increased water pressure. Normally it's not a big deal but perhaps you are extra sensitive. What does your wife say Bob? Are you a sensitive guy?? Lungs can't be made stronger. The muscles in your chest may get stronger with exercise. Search for such exercises on Google. Good luck. Alec
Thirsty? Just pop off the regulator and drink some water around you. As for the personal slim fit jaw regulator, use it for your secondary octopus regulator. Lol just kidding.

Curious what you guys think about full face masks, like the Ocean Reef or the OTS.
I like using my divator mask from Sweden ( looks like an OTS) but masks do consume more air quicker.
