Ryan Leslie was in go mode as he arrived at NPR headquarters after an early morning road trip from New York. He bounced all over the space even when the cameras weren’t rolling. I was curious to hear how he would take his big, synth-heavy sound and adapt it to the Tiny Desk, but then was quickly reminded that at his core, he’s a creator. Leslie made songs like “Diamond Girl,” “How It Was Supposed To Be” and Cassie’s “Long Way 2 Go,” so to watch him recreate them here with ease shouldn’t have been a surprise.
After writing and producing Cassie’s debut album and hits for others, the singer-songwriter and entrepreneur decided to focus on being a solo artist. It’s not easy to go into a studio by yourself and walk out with a complete album, but R. Les is that artist. The viral video of him creating “Addiction” is remarkable proof. In 2013, he walked away from the traditional music industry, removing his music from streaming services and created a new platform utilizing his social media following to promote and sell his work. Unlike many in Leslie’s class of producers from the early 2000s, he crafted a distinctive style, branching out and creating high demand as a writer and producer. It’s a style, proven here at his Tiny Desk, to be timeless.

@@neildevon2922 i guess many dont know that he started the first "directly paid by fans artist" business. Maybe the pilot for Patreon and OF likes. He had a WhatsApp contact option for a monthly fee or such. His Concerts were much much smaller but he was the organizer and seller of tickets directly etc etc. He knew a lot of his fans by name and such. He made a little ryan leslie bubble very very early on and I think he stated he was very happy about it.
also we gotta add, he left the diddy spectrum early on too. Im guessing his flirting towards cassie wasnt received well.

I’ll never forget when Ryan’s laptop was stolen, his life’s music was on it and it was devastating. I think it affected him terribly enough for him to pull from the industry. I’m so happy he found success in many other things, this tiny desk is deserved! I remember his videos of playing every single instrument on a track, like we just don’t have producers like this anymore!!

"Diamond Girl" was the song that really hooked me on Ryan Leslie! It's such a classic and his voice is incredible. I remember listening to him all the time back in the day, and I still love that song. He's a true artist with a timeless sound.

Twenty years ago this guy carried TH-cam artistry to another level, before any major artists published videos or anything on YT, before partner programs, before monetization this guy uploaded his amazing studio sessions like clockwork, exceeding all expectations and proving independents could grow into successful professionals on TH-cam. A million views was a barrier, until Ryan Leslie broke through it.
Too bad a lot of his early rehearsal, studio and inspiring footage disappeared from his and his associates’ channels.
