Something that struck me was this: there's no way I'd refer to the men who murdered my mother as "gentlemen." Even if I was trying to keep my language clean.

Well I mean, in the calls to Betty Ong during 9/11, the lady she called had called the hijackers "gentlemen" before she caught herself. So I can kind of sort of see it from a trained sort of view. But I wouldn't bleep myself about it. I'd call them exactly what I thought about them and let them bleep me or whatever.

Shirley was a kind and compassionate person who touched many lives. As a close friend and colleague of my mother's, she provided invaluable support when I came out as gay, encouraging my mother to embrace who I am. Shirley saw the best in people and went out of her way to help others find happiness. Her tragic and horrific passing at Richard's hand is the worst kind of injustice. An injustice made even more terrible the months he was on the run -- adding great fear and anger to his family. Richard can rot...But enough about that asshole!
Rest in peace, dear Shirley, your warmth and wisdom will stay with me and my family always.

I was once a witness in a trial where a woman had been severely injured in a car accident. I happened to see the accident and stayed with her till the ambulance came. When I was being prepped for trial, I was told "Do not give more information than the attorney asks for. Yes or no where possible." I wasn't even the one on trial, but I still needed to be careful with what I said so that they couldn't later twist my words in some way. I'm sure this guy's attorney told him the same thing at some point, but he just couldn't help himself and had to give a full chapter for every answer.

then pinhead supreme had to make things even worse by claiming ineffective assistance of counsel which only tacked an extra ten years onto his sentence. i almost lost my shit when one of the other jurors told me that. all he had to do was shut up and take the L but now he won't be getting out until he's in his seventies. arrogance makes court cases so much fun.

After witnessing his mother being brutally murdered by two thugs, he selflessly cut off his ankle monitor, refrained from going to prison for fifteen years (which we all know EVERYONE wants to do) and humbly absconded with his murdered mother’s car in order to start a new life by shacking up with a college student as a guy in his mid-40’s in order to “protect” his ex-wife and children. I personally believe his story has a few truths: 1. HE attacked his mother while she was making a dish (that HE asked her to make possibly to distract her from him pumping himself up to actually do the horrific deed). 2. HE pushed his mother down the stairs 3. HE recalls the sounds his elderly mother made while HE was attacking her that and I am so glad he said the sounds forever haunt him. He spoke truth about the harassing letters also, HE planned on murdering either his wife or his mother instead of going to jail. I hope he hears her screams in his dreams. Him, Chandler Halderson and Joel Guy Jr. are disgusting human beings; they deserve no peace, no kindness, nothing but pain and suffering all of their remaining days ESPECIALLY for taking the lives from people who gave them life. Truely baffling.

i only disagree with the pumping up for the act. i think he snapped after his mother was giving him a peace of her mind after he asked her to help him go into hiding the day before he was scheduled to be put away. she said no. and he snapped. this is why there was no gun involved and instead a kitchen knife. this is also the TRUE reason he took her car. yes, it may have had a fuller tank, but it was ownership. like when an army conquers another army's territory and they take every thing that belonged to the conquered territory. he didn't plan it per se, in the sense that he was trying to get an insurance payout or whatever. he just snapped. otherwise there's no real motive. why kill your mother who is housing you up until you are to go to prison? remember he said during direct that they are both quite opinionated people. this was his subconscious code for she was nagging and was probably nagging him, and he also stated that she is a steel magnolia, which means after he asked her to help him go into hiding she was like you do the crime u do the time. he felt no "compassion" from her and his entitlement caused him to snap and kill her. he could not bare to even step foot in a prison and then on top of that knowing his lw-booty would get taken. too much for him, the son of a bird colonel. now instead of getting his booty taken for 7 years, it's gunna get taken for the rest of his life. narcs/soshes are so dumb, they are so completely self-absorbed they cannot see that there are other people just as smart and likely way smartert than they are. his sentence would have been so managable..

I also believe him, when he said that "they" were going to kill his ex-wife, and children too, and I have no doubt that was his plan, but things got too hot for him. The way the prosecutor just eviscerated his story so effectively and with such intention in her voice was a thing of beauty to hear. When she said "Mr. Merritt" a bit after the 1 hour 42 mark and paused, I seriously expected a "how stupid do you think we are?" to come out of her mouth. I mean it was already pretty obvious he was full of it before she even got her chance to cross exam, but the level of ease with which she dismantled his cocky lies was amazing.
I only wish she would have brought up the snacks he got right after. Like... my man seriously said one of the first things he did after witnessing the very brutal and traumatic killing of his mother (and threat to his childrens lives) was grab gas and.... snacks.... any flicker of doubt the jury had should have instantly vanished. If I had to guess a motive....I bet he had told his mom all about his plans to run away, assuming she'd help since she's helped him with everything so far. Richard was probably going to jump out of his cousin's car and make a run for it (or something like that). Shirley heard about that, said "Absolutely not, you will serve your sentence so I'm going to drive you and make sure you serve." So she texted their cousin saying she'd handle taking Richard to prison. Shirley probably said she'd tell the police where Richard ran if he did. Richard was probably very shocked and offended that his mom wouldn't help him in his escape plan. He now saw her as the enemy who committed ultimate betrayal.

      @CagedLeo ปีที่แล้ว +28

Agreed! Only I doubt he planned on literally fleeing during the transportation process, he always intended on getting a head start. I think he manipulated her to take him herself (prompting the call to cancel on his cousin) and then she either discovered his plan to run OR he expected her to help him, but Shirley was going to do the right thing regardless. So in true loser fashion, Richard turned to violence when he could no longer talk his way out of things. RIP Shirley.

"Terrifying how men can treat everyone they claim to love in their life, the people they are supposed to protect as fathers, husbands and sons - using them as pawns both to enact their violent outbursts on and use them to avoid any accountability"
You should have said people not men. All genders are capable of these acts.

That last part you said demonizing men was pretty awful for you to say. Men and women are both capable of evil. It isn't the gender that determines this, it's the person.

@@benbooth2783no one cares about your crocodile tears because numbers don't lie... The stats on male violence against women and children is staggering. I understand that it's not all men, but patriarchy is a very real thing that affects how violent men and women are, especially men. Women have a right to be angry and frustrated that we live in a world where women are used as objects and things to collect or destroy, dehumanized completely and men can only feel offended when women need to vent their frustrations hearing cases like this constantly in the news or to our fellow loved ones.

He calls his mother’s assailant a ‘monster’ moments after saying ‘the gentleman who pushed her down the stairs.’ Who calls their mother’s attacker a ‘gentleman’? He’s clearly struggling with instinctive narcissist/psychopath ego preservation, as he attempts to seem heartbroken over a crime he committed.

LOL I literally posted the same thing.. I've met narcissists where they are constantly showing their respect for everyone through holding everyone high, when in actuality, they don't respect them at all.. he forgot to label them differently and accidentally called them "gentlemen"

There's a JCS video called 'Jennifer's solution' about a daughter who arranged for her parents to be killed via her boyfriend, and in the interview she also referred to the killers as gentlemen

Narcissist think that they are smarter than everyone around them. He thinks everyone else is dumb and that he can talk his way out. In his mind, no other lawyer is as good as him so he doesn’t need anyone else.

19:25 I feel like the big reason he was talking about "not needing it because of his job," he was focused on trying to downplay how much his mom "actually" helped him, which really just shows how little he valued her help at that time 😬

The ironic thing is he was in jail like 4 years awaiting trial and on the run for 8 months before that, trying to avoid a possible 5 year sentence. He'd possibly have been almost free and clear to resume his life by the time this trial ended if he just went to jail in the first place

    He actually did show emotion.
    When the verdict was read.
There is exactly one person he has ever thought of, and that is himself.
I hope he finds the kind of love for himself in prison that he gave to his family.

Exactly. I noticed that that was literally the only time he looked like he was about to cry when he heard thar guilty but when talking about his dead mother ,there was nothing. Yea he only cares about himself so now he will have only himself in jail since he love himself so much. U have to be a special kind of sick to kill the one that gave you life ,especially in that way and to a good person. It's hard to imagine a person getting even mad enough to do that. Like just a demon . Anger doesn't make a person do that to they mom

It's gratifying when someone like this blames their crime on someone else and is forced to describe themselves as a monster. He clearly wanted so bad to call these alleged killers gentlemen because that's how he sees himself but to save face he has to admit that the murder was monstrous.
