I spend more time looking up videos on surveying rather than my lecture notes and videos lol. This is very good so far that I have come across. Cheers mate, I will check out your other videos.
Nice to watch, haven't used a total station since 2014. I was on vacation, our students left the instrument in the survey vehicle over the weekend and it was stolen. Luckily it was replaced with a GPS and we made a deal with Topcon to have base station on our City Hall. This was great for us, we could roam anywhere in the city and take shots, monuments even back then were not being maintained or replaced. I'd still love to have a total station for those places I can't get a good signal with GPS.
Great video. 1 thing I'd like students to remember is memorize "Bubble Up" i.e the side on which the BUBBLE is(out of circle of course) would be UP. Which means you have to bring that side down to level the instrument.
Я уже 10 лет почти каждый день занимаюсь геодезией, но все равно с удовольствием посмотрел) Очень понятно все объясняешь. Поделился со своими молодыми коллегами.
Hello sir! I have watched almost all of ur uploaded videos. You r doing a great job and the way u explain things is highly appreciable. I thank you from the core of my heart. Stay blessed.
Hello Rami, It would be helpful to your followers to get an understanding of how one would approach a tripod setup in a more challenging real world conditions ie. stone walls, sloping terrain etc. in those cases a plumb bob can speed up the process, but certainly the projection of an imaginary line through each of the legs to intersect at the setup point, while insuring the tripod top is somewhat level will result in less frustration. It should also be pointed out that laser and optical plummets can add to frustration if the tripod head is not leveled first. On a different topic, I was amazed to find “3d scanner App” can produce contours (isolines) of a site by selecting “More” then “Capture Floorplan Image” followed by “Isolines” and specifying “Isoline Step” interval. Amazing! Keep up the good work!
Hi Rami. I really appreciate your videos and I think you are doing great work for the survey community. I was wondering if you could show us how you would go about setting up a total station on a project that is using either a grid or ground coordinate system and explain the importance of the scale factor and how to input the scale factor into the total station. I have heard of people not accounting for the scale factor and then their distances end up incorrect. Is this something that you could do?
Glad you like the videos. Scale factor is very important when it comes to working in State Plane Coordinates as it takes into account the curvature of the earth. A lot of times people don't account for it because they are working on a small site in a local system, so the scale factor really doesn't change their distances. But of course I can make a video taking about it.
The people I work for just bought the cheapest Chinese total station on the interweb. I will find out the name tomorrow. Our fresh out of college engineer is leaving on Friday and the lead geologist asked me to help him run it. I work at a very interesting place, but I love it.
Good morning Rami. Could you please give video about slope staking. Convert the percentage of the slope to run and rise or in opposite. Thank you so much for great video.
$15,000 worth of surveying equipment at any given time, yet can't get someone there to watch the clipping on his Lav. Make sure to monitor sound levels! That being said, this is still a great and really really helpful video, and honestly thank you for being so thorough in your explanations! But for sure, just watch those input levels
I might be an expert in Surveying, but I am a rookie in video production haha. There has been a lot of improvement on the microphone since this video was made!
Rami I’m a huge fan. Question for you.. What happened to the video you had on how to run a closed traverse and the computations to get your new coordinates?? I’ve been looking for it like crazy on your page and TH-cam and can’t seem to find it.
Some people show leveling, then turn 90° and level again. If you get it dead center I am assuming there no need to turn 90° ?? Your videos are awesome!!
Turning 90 degrees and verifying the bubble is still in the middle is a calibration test. If you equipment has been recently calibrated, you should be fine. But very good point!
Rami, would you make a video teaching a user how to change the Sokkia total station from an occupied point to a back sight point; then move total station from occupied point to back sight point to continue collecting data points?
Rami I did my first survey camp today and it was awesome and your video was very helpful! My question that I would like to ask you is how come when I kind of leveled my Total station and when I turn it on it doesn't show me the Level & Plummet screen to fully level it with the screws rotation?
Great work, I hope surveying treats you well. You can always open the leveling screen on your total station and continue leveling to a more precise level.
Hi Rami, great videos, i might be missing something very obvious - but, if i already have Northing and Easting locations for the points i want to set out, how do i 'tell' the total station where it is? Or phrased in another way, how do i know the Northing / Easting of the reference point? How do i work it out? In my case, a surveyor carried out a topographic survey, the architect created a site plan, from which i pulled the easting / northing data of the buildings corners, and now, i want to use my total station to peg those corners out - but i have no existing reference on site. Hope you are able / willing to clarify - either way, still great videos and i'm now a subscriber. Thanks!
Dear Rami, thank you very much for your rich content and great effort in helping surveyors and students. I want ask you about measuring instrument height. Should the surveyor measure the slant Ht. or vertical Ht.? The manual for my total station don't say anything about it.
Please sir I'm a survey assistant and your videos have made to be a great assistant. I will like to know if there more tutorials for to study and write exams to become a surveyor?
I'm using a new automatic kolida total station. on the digital level screen .. as you use the footscrews to bring the bubble to the centre the the seconds reading exceed 10 seconds when it reaches the centre.. any help or advice
The best way is to put tri-pod over the point and stomp the legs in, WITHOUT THE INSTRUMENT ON IT! It dont take very long to get good at setting tri-pod first. Expensive robot total stations will stay in adjustment and thats the proper way to set up.
You are correct, having the total station on can be dangerous if you are on unstable land. Luckily for me, my yard is flat and so I don't run the risk of soil breakdown. But thank you for mentioning this!
My theodolite (no EDM) has bubble in a circle and a bubble on a straight level, but doesn't have this electronic leveling. How would the process change? Do you have a video on this? I usually use the straight level and adjust the feet, then turn the instrument 90° and repeat---this doesn't always work great, and I find I'm out of level again at a new angle. Maybe my instrument is just out of calibration?
well I can safely say that the bubble level is nowhere near what you think it is till you are working with a digital reading. You can look perfect with the eye only to realize your gonna be adjusting knobs for a while to actually get level.
Legal Descriptions is a whole other world in the work of Boundary Surveying. I am developing a course that will be available in the winter regarding performing a boundary survey. Stay tuned.
Occasionally after I slide the reticle back over the nail and zero out the numbers on screen, the level bubble is slightly out of balance. Is there an efficient way to correct this or do you just have to start the whole process over again in order to get the bubble perfectly centered?
This video makes me feel very old. I haven't used a totalstation before. We seem to be the last humans to use the old leveling instrument called the theodolite! 😂😂😂
I am finding difficulty to perform easting and elevation measurements at same RD(chainage I.e., Northing) for existing ground level , kindly help me to clarify this ,I have Sokkia Total station set1x.
Do you have a different email Rami? I think the one I tried didn't go through. You seem fairly responsive so I figured If I had any deeper questions it may be easier to shoot you an email. I am new to the field just started as a field guy 5 weeks ago and I am learning as I go and plan to enroll into a surveying program next fall. But in the meantime I'm trying to absorb as much as I can until then. Regardless I appreciate your videos my friend! Thanks!
The reference point should be placed somewhere were the most amount of points can be collected. For example, if you set up in a corner away from everything, this is a inefficient set up. You want to set up in an open area where you can see the most from that location.
@@RamiTamimi. Hahah thanks for the reply hhah. Really appreciated. It. Just recently picked up the knowledges regarding the surveying. Good videos mate. Keep it up.
You need to establish 2 points. Set your total station on one, and then back sight the other one. This will set up the job for you and you can begin surveying. Be sure to specify the correct prism you are using as well.

When using the three-foot screw to adjust the onscreen bubble won't it affect the circular bubble that you previously set?
This is the best video I have seen about leveling up the Total Station. Thumbs Up.

Welcome!!
How can i locate the video were you used total station to determine the height of a building
How you do it that you wont completely mess the position of the Total Station above the point when you try to adjust the level by adjusting the legs?

Hi Rami, great videos, i might be missing something very obvious - but, if i already have Northing and Easting locations for the points i want to set out, how do i 'tell' the total station where it is?
