The top of his ear was hurt, but it was clearly only a scratch. The cartilage in the ear does not regrow. The skin can heal, but any damage to the structure underneath where he indicated would remain. If he were actually hit by a bullet in any degree he would have a nick out of his ear where the cartilage was destroyed, or he would have needed to have reconstructive surgery, which by all accounts he has not had.
