In this video I review the Simplisafe security system. The Simplisafe security system is designed as a DIY security system that you can setup yourself and does not require any type of long term contract for professional monitoring.
In my testing the Simplisafe security system was responsive and the professional monitoring would call almost immediately when the alarm was triggered.
But there are 3 things that I wish they would change about the Simpliafe alarm system:
    1. It would be great if they allowed app control of the simplisafe security system for free. Currently you need to pay for a professional monitoring subscription for the app control of the system to work.
    2. Increase the camera resolution and provide multiple options for Simplisafe cameras including a more robust outdoor option.
    3. Lower the monthly cost of professional monitoring with app control.

So you can use the app if you have the standard plan for the camera and to update account or system information pins safeword billing and exit/entry delay time (the time between a sensor being set off and the alarm sounding) the benefit of interactive plan is if you have cameras instead of paying one price for the camera plan and another for the system plan you just pay the system plan the other thing is you can get sms alerts on any activity and you can make it to where if you wanted to if a sensor is triggered it sends a secret alerts to your phone if you have the standard you can't customize that part you can still use the app just not as customizable as the interactive plan

What sold me here was the dedicated cellular connection for everything but the cameras. We don't have WiFi and tether everything to our phone when needed.
For Ring/other systems, you'd have to purchase an IoT SIM card from US Mobile or other carrier, get a 500MB+ data package, add to old phone, set hotspot, connect security system to get the "WiFi connectivity". The data plan is roughly $5-6/mo. So $10/mo for Ring + $6/mo for connectivity == Same cost as Standard Plan for Simplisafe.
Obviously not many people do without WiFi/Home ISPs so this is a niche use-case.

We just got the starter kit for testing. The siren is so wimpy relative to our old wired system. And we set it to the top volume. The sound volume barely makes any sound in the house (including when in a room adjacent to the room where base station is). Neighbors would never ever know something was going on (like our wired system which could wake the dead) for neighborhood watch... Everybody refers to the SimpliSafe siren as "very loud". It is not. The devices are easy to set up though.

Overall a very good review. I have had SS for one month. Cameras now go up to 1080 resolution. You did not mention their doorbell-camera. Biggest problem I had was not enough upload wifi speed for the cameras, each requires a minimum of 2 (Not the fault of SS, but of my poor ATT service which only offers 5 upload.) Of course this also depends on the location of the router in relation to the cameras, floors, walls, etc. Getting a nest router system solved that problem. If you are wondering about the separate siren, it is very loud which is just fine. Overall, the SS customer/tech service has been very good (always depends on who answers like any other place). SS is testing an outdoor camera. One BIG BIG plus not mentioned is that you have 60 days to return the equipment if you are not satisfied. If you do order with a promotion, order plenty of everything (ordering later may not include the discount (mine was 30%) and you can always return part of your order or the whole thing. No system is perfect. If there were one out there, everyone would be buying it.

I just spoke to them and they tell me about another 2-4 weeks for the outdoor cameras to arrive. They are trying to get me to order everything now then they will ship cameras when they come in. Seems like a pretty reliable system, I was just concerned about how loud that siren is going to be and didn't want to opt for the additional Aux siren but maybe you answered that for me. With your bandwidth issue how often do you Wi-Fi cams getting kicked off the network?

Well done! I just finished connecting and testing my system (w/camera) and really like it. I agree with your point regarding the camera being an indoor camera and requiring a protective cover for outdoors...they should have an outdoor camera option. Additionally, the smoke and CO2 detectors are very pricey. The one other downfall is not being able to have multiple app users on the account. 🤷‍♂️ That said, I am very happy I made the decision to go with SimpliSafe!

The google is by far the best for video playback as you can view by the sec, and just watch if anything happens outside of the zone. The ring I pay for professional monitoring $100 a year. ( not bad ) but the ring lags and its super slow. Only allowing 30 sec laps time is A BIG fail for a security camera system. I heard google is going away from the security in 2022. Not sure of that correct. After my subscription are up im going to get a professional alarm system. Thats the best way to go. Protect your house and love ones has no price tag.

I have nest cams. You are right. They are the best. I have ADT and have had them 13years. I’m done. Wanted $900 to install a smart lock and they don’t even have ones with auto lock. Found out they were charging me $5/mo with previous lock and $10/mo for a camera that only had a live feed at 720p, no recording or notifications at all.
I was at $75/mo in monitoring fees.
I’m tired of install fees and not knowing what I’m paying for. One call to vivint and a setup the same as o have now is 4k. But I have to act now to lock that in. Lol. So vivint is out.
I was between this and frontpoint. I use myQ for garage, ultraloq for locks, and nest for cams. This seems to make sense for just alarms.
Would it be nice to have them all on one app? Maybe. But none do each well.

I’m not a big fan of the camera. WiFi set up was a hassle and tech support was poor. It turned out to be the security portion of my router, luckily I had a “demilitarized” option and got an unsecured connection on a second channel built into the router. Additionally, the shutter stuck halfway closed on the first one the shipped to me but it was quickly replaced, they sent me one out before receiving my return even so kudos on that but the second one also had a sticky shutter. For that problem, there is an option in the app to leave the shutter open all the time, I bumped it around until it was open and set it to never close. Its looking across the front yard from a second story window (indoors) so no motion triggering. Three issues on one device. I do like the system overall, just not the camera.

The issue I had was that once the doorbell camera was triggered by someone coming in, Simplisafe would only upload and store that video and not the video from the hallway camera. In other words, I couldn’t get simultaneous, multiple videos to save on their server. This would be a huge problem for anyone with a lot of cameras in their system, so I’m assuming it’s an issue that is solved by the base station?

Great review!! I am sooooo glad I came here before pulling the trigger on my simplisafe purchase! No app interface with free self-monitoring?? That’s crazy. I had over $500 in Simplisafe components in my basket. The app should fully usable and free with the purchase of equipment. Ugh back to the drawing board. I want a self-monitoring system that I can install, with a functioning app and one that I can network to save video to my server without going with old school surveillance components. The search continues...

I know this video is old, but now you can control simplisafe with your app without paying a monthly subscription fee. This would be just a self monitoring system with a loud siren. You could even place the louder 105 dB siren outside. Your neighbors would just love you lol. I thought about doing all of this, but I'm returning it all because I have a Ring video doorbell. Might as well just have one system that does it all with a $100 a year price tag. I do love simplisafe and it was easy and fun to install. It truly is a great system, however just not very cost effective compared to the Ring security system in my opinion.

We have the Simply Safe indoor camera and glass break detector. After one week, we had to turn it off and never used it since. We have 3 cats that kept setting off the alarm just walking around and nothing we tried would stop that from happening. We set the camera at the least sensitive setting. We would leave the house and arm the system. We’d be at the gym or wherever and our alarm would go off. We set the camera up at the highest point at the top of our kitchen cabinet which was suggested by the tech help. Same thing would happen. The cats were just walking on the floor, but setting off the alarm. Eventually we gave up and the system was a big waste of money for us.

I agree, I believe that was an oversight on his party (due to limited research). I also think that he should have done more research on monitoring service plans, most DIY home security systems have cost structured monitoring service. Another thing to note is that he is not mentioning anything about environmental interference; depending on the area in which you place your base station (and with the expansion of smart devices, kitchen appliances, and other external factors), it doesn’t matter how close the base station is to the sensor (environmental interference can cause the sensors to malfunction or become unresponsive over time). I learned a lot while working for a DIY home security company.

you could, but why? You may get charged $50 every time you do this for SimpliSafe to register and reregister with your police alarm division; however, SimpliSafe says you pay in 30 day increments, which you can spread out over time. You have to call and wait endlessly to get a representative to put your monitoring on pause. If you succeed, you will then lose app function until you call SimpliSafe back up again and wait endlessly to get a rep to resume monitoring. Understand, though that it may take anywhere from 24-72hrs where you will technically not have monitoring starting the 30 day and resuming any time within the 30 day after pausing.

    • @pbower4378

Plenty of time for a thief to find valuables and get out without being caught. The high db alarm deterant has a good chance to send a thief running before they have a chance to find your valuables.
