Fun fact: the narration (e.g. at 3:45) was done by Vicki Butler-Henderson, who was a presenter on Top Gear in the '90s and Fifth Gear, a racing instructor at Silverstone, and worked in a number of other car-related fields.
Also a slight fun fact: The Japanese version of GT4 Prologue uses the same file formats as Gran Turismo 3 and Concept, and as such, it's possible to backport GT4P tracks and cars to GT3 with a bit of effort (GT4P cars do not have nighttime models, however).
Not just a voice actor! That's Vicky Butler-Henderson, previous host of Top Gear and Fifth Gear. alongside Tiff Needell and Quentin Wilson. Bit of a blast from the past! The only thing I remember about GT4: Prologue is being disappointed that it wasn't the full game!
Vicki Butler-Henderson was the perfect choice for the voice-over in this game. A hell of a driver and years of being on TV for motoring shows means she can really sell what she's saying. Most people in their teens and twenties around the release of this game would have immediately recognised her from then Fifth Gear and previously Top Gear so again, perfect choice.
As an American I didn't recognize it tbh :/ I legit thought she sounded like Diana from the Hitman games. I was waiting on her to tell me who to kill LMFAO
Polyphony Digital did something special GT4. If you had saved data from GT3 and GT4 Prologue on the same memory card. You could transfer 100,000 credits from GT3 and all driving school rewards from GT4 Prologue into the B License from the start.
I instantly remembered Vickies voice. So strange while the rest of the GT series has basically no voice acting at all. I play GT5 prologue ( because normal GT5 doesnt run right on emulator) and its a nice demo that just cuts alot of unnecessary stuff and just keeps the good basics... Poor GT4 devs, got a year left, decided to overhaul the physics and now get roasted for it :)
@@uubrmanx Also GT5 having Jeff Gordon from NASCAR to teach you a bit about pack racing, and I think one of the boys from Top Gear had a spotlight in it, too, since you could drive on the test track.
I think it may have been a very conscious decision because Gran Turismo has a very unique artistic quality based around cars as kinda "personalities" and also the music. Adding a big human element may have taken away from this.
This sequence of James in the Miata feels so close to me driving for the first time and my mom cheering at my first actual gear shift in the 206 that i inherited, this is mysteriously so nostalgic for me 😂
I may heard of Top Gear, but now I know also about the existence of Vicki Butler-Henderson and she's not just a notable former host but she's also a race driver according to Wikipedia as I visited an article about her last time. Also I am quite loving her voice also btw 💖💖
20:27 I don't think it's an emulator problem, I think it's because the actual game utilities the PS2 pressure sensitive triggers, which aren't on a linear scale, so it feels weird when using modern triggers. They probably made 100% halfway so you didn't have to squeeze the triggers so hard all the time.
Afaik the triggers werent pressure sensitive on PS2 controllers, only the face buttons (but only in 3 states: 0%, 50% and 100% pressed) Edit: nvm triggers, bumpers, face buttons and dpad were analog, according to wikipedia on a scale of 256 levels. Maybe my controller slowly dies or the games I played did the "3 step pressure" thing
@@vetrixfx9264 I think Dustin mapped the face buttons to the triggers, since some newer games use the triggers for accel/brake, and most controllers now don't have analog face buttons
@@vetrixfx9264 Nope, all the buttons are pressure sensitive on the DualShock 2. So even the "triggers" (L2 and R2). The face buttons are also more sensitive than only 3 states. It doesn't just jump between 0-50-100, that would be dumb. What controller did you use? Third party one? Why make stuff up? :D Thanks for the edit though...
@@Mandarin9900 i thought it was only 3 step sensitive as one game i played only reacted to 3 steps (or atleast i only could tell those 3 steps apart). I think that was on NFS Underground 1 on an original controller. Could also be all made up by my memories lol
14:35 I was disappointed for a moment that we didn't get the fun and silly acting... But James to the rescue! Thanks for a funny moment of laughter with that one :D
The prologue really does feel like a fever dream, it's like Gran Turismo 3 being mishmashed with 4, you hear 2/3 sounds combined with 4 in different areas, sound effects are mostly 2/3, music is mixed kind of. I mean, obviously since it's like a beta but still.
The final set of licenses you missed out on, after the 10 laps of Fuji are as follows: 1 lap time trial of Tsukuba in a Prius, but you must not use more than a gallon of fuel Autocross course Coffee Break 1 lap time trials on each course (S License style) And yes, the one with the Prius is as boring and somehow stupidly hard to do as it sounds.
You can fix the triggers by changing the sensitivity in the PCSX2 controller settings. At least for me these values work well in GT4. LT 0.402 RT 0.206
Better yet, just bind your controller onto a non pro USB wheel (Controller tab > USB port 1 > Wheel device > Driving Force). You can ignore binding the wheel's R2 and L2 buttons as I don't think games use them and you can rebind in most cases anyway should you need to. Feels different at first (steering wise) but a lot better in the long run compared to standard pad. Just make sure you set a deadzone if the analogs don't zero when they are neutral. Also you will lose vibration, which is the only major downside.
