    From the 1980's through the early 2000's, the Mercedes SL absolutely dominated the luxury convertible market. It was comfortable, well-made, and good looking, with very little competition from other brands. But then Mercedes did the unthinkable: they made it ugly. Customers went elsewhere, to the BMW 6 and 8 series, to the Porsche 911, and to the Bentley GT. All of a sudden we stopped seeing the SL on the road so much. Now, for 2023, Mercedes has brought out an all-new SL, with a new direction: a 2+2 configuration, all-wheel-drive, and a much better looking body. On the surface the new SL is absolutely the right move, but does all the tech take away from the driving experience?
    Mercedes provided the vehicle, insurance, and a tank of fuel for this review.

      @@letitrip5139 only will hit 50k if basically no one wants it, even used and cheaper than new.
      So, that won't happen. For 80k it's probably a superb car.
      For 70k it's a bargain and find many buyers.
      For it to hit 50k it would have to be older than 5 years and have a lots of miles on it
      or would have to be a crashed example.
      For it to hit 50k as the average selling price you probably have to wait until 2032...
      But in any case, depreciation will be brutal on this thing as its current price is ridiculously high for what it's offering.

    The SL's fatal flaw is that it's priced against the Turbo cab as stated. When that happens it's going to be the Turbo winning all day.

    • @ukwan
      @ukwan ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Different cars entirely, the Turbo cab is a rocket ship that's really good to drive for a drivers car and most enthusiasts will buy the Turbo cab.
      The SL63 AMG is an isolated warp drive car for people who have little to no interest in driver involvement but want to go really fast in luxury, it's taken a lot of the tech from the outgoing S Class Coupe which was killed off in 2020, it's now the flagship Mercedes.
      Also it's not air suspension which they keep saying in this video it's hydraulic.

    • @The_Stanman
      @The_Stanman ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@ukwan They're both luxurious and high performance cabs that will be cross-shopped. But yes the SL definitely focuses more on the luxury part (tho it's still an AMG) and 911 more on sport aspect.
      The problem with the SL is it's horrible control interface (especially steering wheel) and UI undermine the luxury experience. That's something the Bentley (and Porsche) do much better on.

    1:45 Eh, the SLS came in at 5-600 pounds less than the current SL63, so for what it's worth, the SLS was probably the most recent "light" iteration of this car, especially considering the SLS is also the direct predecessor to it (SLS, AMG GT, new SL63 since all three were built by AMG.)
    SL also originally meant "sport light" (1:52); the SLS did break out to "super light sport" though.
    2:53 lots of hate for the new SL; the car is intended to be a complete reboot, so it's not unsurprising that new buyers might actually want to track it. The old SL platform is deceased; this is directly descended from the AMG GT.

    Ready to get another SL. But I'm not buying this car. After living with the glass roof Twin Turbo V12 roadster, there's just no going back to the cloth roof. There's no substitute for the Black Series V12 muscle either [w/ RennTech ECU reflash]. $90k will be a good downpayment on a pristine 5k mile 2009 SL65 and it's appreciating in value. These new SL's won't be appreciating in value because the glass roof V12 experience is extinct and no amount of technology can make dedicated SL buyers forget it. @@jackmarston2515 You've been a fan but not an owner. If you were an owner you'd know the SL65 is much quicker on modern tires than originally tested. Most of the torque from the 604hp/738lb-ft Twin Turbo V12 went up in smoke on the OEM Pirelli PZero's. The real world Cup2 tire SL65 does 0-60 in 3.0 seconds flat and 10.9 in the quarter. Brake-torqued to 3000rpm and it just rips. Those Cup2's grip like racing slicks. Finally modern tire technology has caught up to the M275's torque. Even on stock 2009 PZeros 50-70mph passing is 2.3 sec for the SL65 vs 2.9 sec for the new SL63.
      Bottom line: none of these SL65's is on original showroom PZeros but by now have modern tires. Most owners know the secret to unlocking the true performance is mounting Michelin Cup2's. Because not even AWD can overcome that Twin Turbo V12's tidal wave of torque.
      PS: That's before modernization from RennTech's 70hp OBDII plug in tune combined with upgraded coil packs, NGK's Ruthenium spark plugs and Green Filter Co's air filters. That unlocks the next 100hp lol.

    MB is just ripping off their customers with their price tag for this new SL, this shit is way more expensive than both S coupe and GT coupe. The .5 faster acceleration? A bit faster in the curbs? Who gives a shit they don't win racing competitions with their engines like F1 for example and on top of that it's a fuckin VW. Just getting a used 2022 SL63 after trading in my 2010 M6 Competition Edition. Looked at M850i and M8, 911 4S (convertibles) as well. I do want all wheel drive living in Canada for a year round car (My M6 was useless haha in the winter and wet even with Pilot Sports but still loved it) but that ruled out other options like a Lexus which was only rear-wheel drive. The M850i was at a glance very similar look (but bigger) so just wanted something that felt more new and different. Yes the Porsche is a top drivers car but I will never be racing it (I am an old guy now) and there are so many Porsches on the road I just wanted something different. The AMG SL63 just ticked a lot of boxes and I just felt more comfortable in the drivers seat. Now I will be looking for a which college provides the best courses to get through all the tech :0) Cheers

    It’s amazing that Mercedes would bring a car to market, in that price range, without testing it through an objective, non-affiliated 3rd party, (like TST, for example) just to work out the bugs you discovered. The rear steer feel, long touch hot screen and refusal to hold a gear are unacceptable for a car of that class. Just assuming that the posh executives won’t mind because “rich people” is a mistake. Some of those “rich people” are regular viewers of channels like this.

    In all fairness, the 2006 SL65 AMG weighs nearly 4,600lb. So this is actually nearly 300lb lighter than it was 20 years ago. It also cost $188,000 back then, which is the equivalent of over $273,000 today. So this one is actually cheaper and lighter.
    That said, I'd still take an older one all day. Better looks, optional V12 engine, less expensive, and will probably hold its value considerably better.

    Although the name SL has it's own history in the brand, hybridization and practicality have found its way into the the new car, therefore making it a completely different proposition than what the name SL was intended for (sign of the times we live in for better or worse). Mercedes should therefore, either leave the hybridization/electrification and practicality for the lesser models or completely axe the SL. But given the pride Mercedes takes into the name SL, I highly doubt the latter will happen.

      SL and 911 turbo always shared the same audience, if only for bragging rights. But while the 911 keeps on improving in the GT area and is basically on par with the SL now, the SL half-assedly tries to go sport where the Turbo eats its lunch.
