Mesmerizing... No matter how many times I watch his mv's. Still gets me every time. Have you checked out "LIT"? Talk about cinematic. Much respect for Lay and his "crew". He put his heart and soul into all of his projects.

Lay just happens to be on another level with his music, he demands perfection from everything (lyrics, production, choreography......oh yeah..........BALANCE) and has his hands in everything he touches. Flying Apsaras is one my favorite solo songs from any EXO member (my ult group). More solos to come...

I still cannot get over not having a Flying Apsaras MV because Lay was not satisfied with it. Shows how meticulous he is with his art. He dosen't just give us a music video, he tells a story with it, via with visuals or choreo.
He sometimes checks out reactors reacting to him. Hope he sees yours one day. 😊😊😊
Lay- Lit should definitely be next, also Honey

Whenever I watch Lay do pretty much anything, it makes my heart so full. He was my first bias in EXO. In the debut era at least, I don’t think his self confidence matched his talent and abilities. It was really hard to see him transition into being an M-Pop soloist, but when I look at what he’s accomplished, I would never wish for it to be different.

Seeing as you really like "Flying Apsaras", there is actually a visualizer for it that are scenes from the MV that was never released. I also highly recommend you check out "LIT" if you want more of this (LIT came out first and then Flying Apsaras just continued on with that cinematic and traditional vibe).

Lay is creating his own genre of music. He is combining eastern and western music.

In Lay's "Veil" MV, the silver tiles we see are silver Mahjong tiles, which is a game that is made up of tiles a little like dominos. Lay's just happen to be extra fancy silver to show his status, etc. On one tile you see the Chinese character for East, which is his previous album that "Flying Apsaras" is on, and another was the Chinese character for West, which is his current album title.
The instrument you hear -- which you also see being played at the beginning of the MV -- is an Erhu, which is a traditional Chinese instrument that is a little like a cross between a violin and a cello.
On one of Lay's first solo albums Sheep, he has a song called "Mask" and it's all about striving to keep on the right path and to accomplish his goals even in the face of adversity, as he struggles to be accepted and understood. It's about not letting others influence your choices when you know the direction you are headed is right and to believe in yourself, etc. So, an alternate message in "Veil" could be that he is now taking the mask off and he no longer has to hide who he really is because he has accomplished some of his goals and he is learning what path he needs to take in order to find the success that he is looking for, etc. Or, he is telling others that they should be brave enough to take the mask off, etc. Check out this clip of Lay on the survival reality competition show Idol Producer, where he explains to a group of trainees the meaning behind "Mask," th-cam.com/video/6OOiszMmrN0/w-d-xo.html.
Lay has also posted two dance practice videos for "Veil". You are in for a treat when you check them out. The MV was the English version of the song, however, in his first "dance practice"/performance video you can hear the Chinese version of the song.
As previously mentioned, with Lay's M-Pop style, he is combining traditional Chinese sounds and instruments, like you hear in this song, with modern hip-hop and pop beats and styles to create an amalgamation of both Western and Eastern culture in order to reach a wider audience. And he showcases traditional forms of dance by combining them with modern dances in order to bring Chinese/Asian/Eastern culture to the world in a new way.
As with everything Lay does, this whole song, MV and choreography was created by him. Once again, he wrote and composed and produced this song and the whole album himself, including the English lyrics. He even created the beats himself. And he also helped choreograph and direct the MV, etc. As you have discovered, when it comes to Lay's solo work, he pretty much does it all himself. He has a hand in all aspects of his solo projects.

Lay is so talented! He wrote, composed and produced almost all of his solo songs. You should definitely check out Lay’s lit mv. Lay spent $1.4 million making that mv, and the mv is amazing. The visual effect was done by the Oscar nominated company Dexter. You won’t regret! Also, flying apsaras has a 40s visualizer you should definitely check out.

Mr Ceo Lay Zhang 🦄 our lay solo never disappoint and i love lay concept of his Solo's. I love his music instruments , and when he dance you can't take off your eyes 👀 this why lay said balance is important of the dance his balance is next level.

The story in Lay's "Flying Apsaras" was inspired by Chinese mythology or folktales. Apsaras are spiritual immortal beings that can fly -- similar to angels -- which are based on Hindu and Buddhist beliefs. Flying apsaras are most often found in hieroglyph images as part of ancient Chinese cave murals. Lay even shot part of what was going to be the MV at the site of some of these caves. So, a lot of the pictures you see them making in this dance are designed to look like the images of the flying apsaras from those drawings.
Lay is an ambassador for China, so one of his goals is to share Chinese culture with the world. One way he is doing this is by creating his own style of music which he has labeled M-pop. M-Pop stands for Mixed-pop, which means he mixes traditional Chinese elements and sounds with mainstream pop and hip-hop beats and styles -- combining old school Chinese culture with new modern hip-hop and contemporary beats and styles.
The choreography has also been designed to highlight Chinese culture by using a lot of traditionally Chinese dance moves and styles. The choreographer that Lay worked with was Huang Xiao who is a member of his team from the dance competition show that Lay was a team captain on in 2021 called Street Dance of China season 4, and the other dancers are all members of Huang Xiao's Hello Dance crew.
Lay is a singer, rapper, songwriter, composer, producer actor, director, editor, dancer, designer, etc. -- genius -- and with every new release of his, he just one ups himself. When it comes to Lay's solo work, he does it all -- he writes, composes and produces the songs (including the rap sections), he even creates all his own beats, he has a large part in creating the choreography and he has a hand in coming up with and directing the MVs. It is also all financed by him. He even owns his own production company called Zhangyixing Studios, which is named after Lay. (Zhang Yixing is Lay's real name. Lay is a stage name given to him by SM Entertainment.)
As you know, Lay is the Chinese member of EXO and he was originally meant to fill the same role in EXO-M -- the Mandarin Chinese sub-unit of EXO -- that Kai fills in EXO-K -- the Korean sub-unit of EXO. Kai is one of the top two BEST dancers in Korea (Taemin from SHINee being the other top dancer) and Lay is one of the top dancers in China.
Lay's catchphrase is "Balance" which means that when it comes to choreography and synchronization it has to have balance. If it's not balanced then it's not good. So, his attention to detail when he creates music and choreography is on point.
He is so highly respected within the Chinese music and dance community that he is considered an authority figure. He is regarded as an expert at so many different things because when he decides to do something he becomes hyper focused with the goal of being the best at it. Like all of SM's top dancers, Lay is super dedicated when it comes to dance and music. He literally spends 6 hours every day in the dance studio practicing, regardless of how busy his schedule is. Some of his favorite sayings are "Try hard, work harder" and "Talent is only 1% of what you need to succeed, hard work, dedication and a grateful/humble heart is what makes up the other 99%."
Lay is a perfectionist and he is never satisfied unless everything exceeds his expectations, which is why he only released a short 40 second visualizer using a few clips from what was going to be the MV, and we don't have a full MV for "Flying Apsaras". He wasn't happy with the final product. This is also why Lay is involved in all aspects of his music. He takes pride in the fact that all parts of his work are done by him, so he wants it to be extremely high quality because it's his reputation that's on the line if things aren't up to his standard.
This album, which "Flying Apsaras" is on, is called East.
Fun fact: I believe the dragon in his "Flying Apsaras" visualizer clip is connected to the dragon we see in Lay's previous MV, "Lit." If you haven't seen the visualizer yet, you really should check it out.

Flying Asparas gave a mystical feel the most parts of the song. Lay really wants to incorporate his country's culture in the choreogrphy or the instruments or both. Thanks for the react.

Our dear and perfectionist Lay, each of his MVs is a piece of art. He is part of every step in the production of his songs and MVs!
I love Veil but Flying Apsaras is magical and the choreography is incredible. When I say that Lay is a perfectionist it's true. We're looking forward to Apsaras' MV because we knew it would be, as always, wonderful, but it never came because Yixing thought it wasn't perfect! Then later he gave us that wonderful dance practice!! Our dear china sheep!
Other Songs: Sheep (he has a version with Alan Walker), Lose Control, Monodrama, Honey, Good Bye Christmas, I need you, Lit (The MV IS like a movie)...

    Yay! CEO Zhang :D
Lay has really developed his own signature approach over the years and his solos could not come from anyone else, 100% from his unique imagination and style.
He also does so many cool collabs with other artists. For something fun, I invite you to check out Shut Up and Dance where he works with Jason Derulo and the boys from NCT 127. The man is insanely busy and I hope he also is just enjoying his life xx
