  • The Ben Lomond Track rewards trampers with spectacular 360 degree views over Queenstown, Lake Wakatipu and the surrounding mountain ranges. The track is approximately 14km return and is classified as difficult.
    The track begins among Douglas fir on Skyline Access Road or the Tiki Trail. At about 800 m altitude you leave the tree line behind to enter alpine tussocks and shrubs. Climb to the 1,326 m Ben Lomond Saddle. Beyond the saddle is Ben Lomond Station where the track becomes a marked route. From here, the terrain becomes steeper and rougher as it approaches Ben Lomond's 1,748m summit. If you would like to shorten the hike, you can take the Skyline Gondola up, down or both; this makes it significantly easier on the legs.
    Checkout the below video by NZ Mountain Safety Council, this has all the information you will need:

    Chris, you can be proud of your decision in 6:00 . When Rheinhold Messner, one of the best mountaineers in the world, was asked how to become the best mountaineer, he replied: The best mountaineer is not someone who reaches the summit, but someone who knows when it is better to turn back without reaching the summit. Keep it up! :DD

      It's a beautiful town but can be very busy and touristy! If you enjoy a more laid back experience, we recommend the nearby Wanaka 😊👍

    Returned to NZ for the first time in 20 years recently and managed to summit Ben Lomond but a) I took the gondola to shave off the start, b) it wasn’t snow covered, and c) it still took me 7 hours!

      It was the first proper mountain I tried to tackle and may have underestimated it a bit 😅. It was a good wake up call for what lay ahead for NZ!

    The view is absolutely amazing! Looks so cold and slippery too. There is always next time to get to the summit no point pushing yourself if you don't feel confident to reach the top. Till next time!

      So true Elizabeth! Always better to be safe. Not looking forward to that climb again though 😂, might have to take the Gondola up next time to save my legs a little bit. Maybe I'll be in better shape by then haha

    I did this yesterday, best thing I ever did, it's summer now and the views were incredible! But I can see why you didn't do it, even in the summer it was a scramble in parts, add ice and you'd be toast.

      Better to play it safe! Will return another time and reach the summit. Another good one is the Moonlight Track, which you can combine with Ben Lomond for extra punishment

      It's such a great camera for the price! We recently upgraded to a Panasonic GH6, but it's about three times the price and overkill for most people. If you like taking photos, the G9 is a great stills camera as well

    Good call. The mountain will be there. Can't do the next one if you don't come down from this one. As for your comment "Can't complain about the view," I'm going to call that an understatement. Thanks for taking us along. Great video.

      Thanks for the continued support John! This was my first mountain hiking experience in NZ, soon after arrived. Was a bit of a shock coming from the Western Australia "mountains" 😅

    • @johnhallford239
      @johnhallford239 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hahahaha...I traveled from Brisbane to Townsville years ago. I'm going to guess by the quotations around "mountains" that those in western Australia closely resemble those in the east. Plenty of mountains around me, and great hikes to take, but most of the passes are closed in winter. Those that aren't, the trails are. Going to work against me for climbing when I get there. Oh well, one step at a time and make good decisions. Still can't wait.

    I noticed the sign says bring ice axe and crampons in winter. Do you think those are essential at that time?

    • @ChrisandDanya
      @ChrisandDanya  ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on the amount of snow. The year we hiked this it was a very mild winter so not a lot of snow on the mountains. With a good dumping of snow, then crampons and ice axe would be necessary. I think some sort of micro spikes would still be ideal if crampons/axe were not required
