That's funny, I've made so many things out of cutting boards. It's ridiculous that the HDPE and PP sheets you can find online are so goddamn expensive but then the exact same size of cutting board is like half the price. It's the same goddamn thing!
Also, here's another tip, the thicker cutting boards also start to get up there in price so, for projects where you need a thick solid block or just a sheet with some substance to it, you can instead buy a couple of boards the same color, preheat your oven to about 350F (specifically for HDPE, PP is lower temp I think and you'll need to experiment with temp either way since everyone's oven is different), pop the two boards into a cooking pan lined with tin foil, pop that in the oven for about 15 minutes or so, then, being careful not to burn yourself on the melted plastic, dump the contents into a mold of your choice (usually I just make a wooden box with a lid) and then clamp everything tight for a couple hours. The plastic will shrink quite a bit as it cools so you might have to readjust the clamps but there's no toxic fumes or smoke as long as you don't actually burn the plastic. And you can make all kindsa different shapes for things that way. Technically you could even do this with recycled containers and plastic bags as long as you know what they're made of. But I've found the big thick sheets are the easiest to make stock out of and then cut down to your shape from there.

Nice! I wonder if the right double sided tape would work to hold layers together. Also, if you don't have a drill press you can use a stop collar on drill bit to set hole depth.

Hex holder shipped today. On a different note, any bright ideas where I can get a chisel handle for my 1/4" Shark chisel? Someone on a volunteer job got into my tools and several chisels were chipped but the small ones handle is gone. I've looked all over but not been able to find a replacement. Had I a lathe, I'd turn one, but...

Whats the diameter of the piece that fits into the handle? I might have a cheap solution!

It's tapered cone shape.. Chisel is 1/4". Can I send a pic of next size up handle to someone on the business site you posted?

    A 37/128" bit works perfectly.
You said you went one step up from a 9/32" bit, but you didn't say how big of a step. I made something similar, (only it was a disc, made with MDF). I tried 19/64", but it was a little sloppy. I bought a 37/128" bit for $4, and it's the perfect size for 1/4" hex.
Oh, and since my material was 3/4" thick, I drilled the holes 9/16" deep, and that put the "skinny" part well below the surface, and left 3/16" in the bottom.

are the bits tite enough in the holder to prevent them from falling out if the board is flipped upside down??

    • @SamMacyDesigns
      @SamMacyDesigns  6 ปีที่แล้ว

They would be if you used a 9/32" bit to drill the holes! I tried that at first and they were a little too tight for my liking so I stepped up one size. But if you used a 9/32" bit and took your time drilling so it didn't heat up too much I bet you'd have a nice snug fit that wasn't a pain to remove!

I tried various bits but all were to tite or too loose. In looking at the 99 cent plastic holder, there are two small o rings in the plastic casting. It's the o rings that actually do the holding. This afternoon I went to KMS Tools her in Victoria BC and ordered 10 of these holders. Price has dropped to 79 cents each. They will hold all my hex shank bits, drill bits and countersinks with hex adapters as well as the speedbore bits.Small items are easily lost in cracks and crevasses. Each one is about 4" long and holds 12 driver bits. They are being shipped here, expected in a week or so.I liked your idea, but mine need to travel with me in my gear bag. Both my drill and driver plus chargers and batteries plus everything in the way of drill and driver bits goes into a job specific bag. Find a way of getting me you contact info and I'll send you one if I have one left over.

Oh wow that sounds like you have a good system down! I'm always interested in hearing how other people organize the stuff they need on the go. Those could be handy for just throwing some bits in your pocket too if you don't feel like walking to the shelf/toolbox. I would definitely be interested if you have an extra! I can receive most things at my physical business here (www.exit18equipment.com/) that's where I spend the majority of my day! Thanks Roger!

These small holders will work for most of my bits.
I've put hex shank adapters on my countersinks.
The bits in the countersinks are tapered spiral bits.
      I have them for a #6 and #8 screw.
There is a hex adapter which goes on so it can be used in a driver as oposed to a drill.
I find with tbe quick stopping of the drills brake that it undoes the jaws and the bit falls out.
No such problem with a driver.
Now my hex shank driver bits, countersinks, vix bits and speedbores can be organized.
The holders will be here in a week or so and it may take 2-3 weeks later to get it to a US destination.
Because I used to do Project Management and Service out of town, my tools are stored in Pelican cases.

    BTW, that music sucks.
