I love his dead pan humor. “Roses are red, violets are blue. Inside I’m dead, and so are you.” *Keeps going without laughing at all*. Also, I’m going to start using the “staff is a stick with style.”
I liked the staff one lol
WOW. T-shirt in the snow. You are really taking this Nordic thing to a whole new level 🤣🤣. Love from Croatia 🇭🇷
I can never tell where/when these videos are made. When its cold where i am he is jacketless in a grassy field and when it is scorching here he is on a snowcapped mountain. Jackson Crawford transcends time.
"Velicoraptor or something" and that look down.. That hilarious. Thanks yet again.
I think the moaning about Berkeley is knee-jerk silliness. It is a credit to you that you were hired to teach at Berkeley.
I admit that these backgrounds are much more interesting, though.
Ok Tina. You presume that everybody knows about the doctor, and that this is not the first time you see a video from him.
Nothing but props for working in any public (& most private) institutions of higher learning. I'll say this in the old Berkley videos you don't look anywhere near as comfortable as in these. I don't know if it is practice or being in a better spot in your life.
Thank you again for these.
Norse poetry has the ability to cause avalanches.
Might the avalanche at the end of this video have been a sign from Odin that he approves of how Dr. Crawford teaches Old Norse and its history?
;^}
If it's a thunderous sound then wouldn't it be Thor?
Could be Skaði as well, but who knows :D
Vespers are very voluntary for velociraptors
and I thought writing poetry in English was challenging enough
thanks as always Dr Crawford, much appreciated
I’m so glad I watch these these help my pagan knowledge grow more and more
One of my favorite youtube channels!!! Always learn something from you. 👍🏻 Thank you
Im so glad i found your channel! GREAT content!
As always, thank you for the insightful instruction on a topic that is normally very much hidden away. Fantastic work.
Amazing presentation
Could you make a Norse style poem in English for us? I'd love to get a sense of what they felt when they heard poetry like this.
He has a few original example stanzas of various meters in English in the longer video, if that's helpful (I'm not sure if there'll be similar examples in the upcoming videos of this series, but it's possible): th-cam.com/video/FsX70ZSJkOQ/w-d-xo.html
Great video as always dr. Crawford.
Avalanche at the end was like an unexpected dessert!
I love that version of the archetypal St Valentine's Day poem.
I’d love to hear more poetry read aloud in the original language, before translation. So much of poetry is the rhythm and sound.
Awesome! :) avalanche included..... good morning Dr. Crawford!!
So dope! Thanks!
Thanks Dr. Crawford. I am still surprise Old Norse has so much in common with Finnish.
Wonderful as always. Grateful to you for sharing your knowledge.
Powerful hat tip you got there! Be careful with that thing :D
That beautiful piece of poetry that you said and I quote roses are red violets are blue I'm dead inside and so are you Woz the most beautiful thing they truly spoke to my soul that I ever heard I just thought you could use the complement
Good morning Doc C. Sitting here enjoying my coffee on a warm summer morning in NC. Short sleeves. An exercise in suffering? Developed endurance for the cold? Thanks you.
Sounds like a great day. It's actually quite warm in the Rockies as the summer sun is strong, humidity is low in the west. The presence of snow doesn't mean cold ambient air temp. When I lived there I would shovel snow in a t-shirt many days.
@@jbscornerstore It's nice in the mornings. Sweltering during the day. I have found that I am much more appreciative of the cold now that I am done with my military service and can come and go as I please. I mentioned the exercise in suffering only because I do it as a reminder to be grateful for the life I have made, and to avoid the trap of becoming soft. As it were.
@@jamessimpson9385 I too am a vet, was actually stationed in Colorado. I agree with you about staying tough. I've always been a cold weather person (but of course enjoy warm weather as well).
@@jbscornerstore It's a small world. Well met.
Nice T-shirt!
How about something on Kennings.
I read the Havamal once a week. Also loved your Cowboy Havamal translation. Do you have a full translation yourself, Doctor? I would be very interested. Thank you.
The travelers Havamal comes out later this year
It's already in Dr. Crawford's translation of the Poetic Edda (along with the Cowboy Hávamál), and as another commenter mentioned, his standalone version called "The Wanderer's Hávamál" should be out later this year, which includes the poem in the original ON, translation, commentary, and other Norse excerpts and poems about Odin: th-cam.com/video/YZGNICm7n0U/w-d-xo.html He's also got a ton of videos on this channel regarding the Hávamál, including a series where he goes over it in Old Norse: th-cam.com/video/JgTCL0I1iQE/w-d-xo.html
@@nkhtn663 Thank you. I haven't been able to afford his books as of yet. I am gettin there though. Thanks again for the information.
That is wild. An Avalanche! 😃😎🤠
Do we have records of any constellations of the Norse?
I think I saw a chart of this on The Viking Answer Lady website
Love your videos! One thing I don't understand that maybe you could clear up. Are old Norse myths and old Germanic myths the same? And do they use the same symbols?
Hell yeah
Are avalanches expected upon each and every entry unto this playlist?
Serendipity we call it.
Is this an older video just being released or is the lake still frozen over?
This is a little unrelated to the content of your video, but I heard my sisters talking about the word ‘Einherjar’ and I was wondering if you could tell me how that’s pronounced?
Dr. Crawford pronounces it using reconstructed Old Norse pronunciation in this video (along with the Younger Futhark and ON on the screen): th-cam.com/video/4GcUphVrMjE/w-d-xo.html
"vespers" - I thought that was Evening Prayer?!
5:26 …or insert negatives… "Óvinir verið eigi velkomnir", "Engin óvinir verið velkomnir"… or you're talking about "that bad place over there, that welcomes your enemies"…
I'm just wondering how you're out in the snow in short sleeves. Isn't it freezing??
It can be warm in the air and the sun is hot in June, the avalanche is probably because of the thaw. Snow doesn't melt quickly, and the night be cool to slow the process.
Is there a book you recommend for learning Norse poetry?
Snorre Sturlasson the Prose Edda. It's a book about Norse poetry.
Hello Dr Crawford,
I am wanting to learn Old English, can you recommend books (including dictionary) and/or e-books/websites to learn it?
I know that your field of expertise is Old Norse, but it seems that you are also quite knowledgeable in Old English as well.
Also, I am learning Old Norse as well and I have a question for you:
Are you able to actually speak Old Norse as an everyday language? Like, can you just speak randomly out loud to convey your thoughts like in English?
Thanks!
There may be books and such you could find, but in the meantime, I recommend a channel called Leornende Ealde Englisc. Otherwise, maybe check out some apps to learn German or Dutch. It's amazing how much closer to Old English they are than modern English.
@@ShyBoy6ty9 Thanks,
I ended up finding a book anyway: 'An Anglo Saxon Primer' by: Henry Sweet.
Thanks for the channel recommendation.
Wow
Ever the drengr
Why are you in short sleeves in the middle of A snowy mountain field?
....JUNE!!!! So... Is it blazing hot or super cold? Wtf is with the snow?
It melts slowly, maybe the nights are still cool. The sun is hot in June no matter how much snow there is.
Hi! Is there anyone here that can help me translate ”what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” to old Norse? Would really appreciate it. Thanks
