There is nothing rotten about this deal. The constructor and many of the subcontractors are Canadian owned and operated. The constructor is actually MDA Space, the company involved with Canadarm and also the company where the announcement took place. Long story short, the vast majority of the economic fallout will directly improve the Canadian economy. The industrial capital will be local, the intellectual capital will be local *and* the jobs will be local and not through the public sector. This is also a loan that has to be paid back with interests. It's one of the rare times when this was actually done properly. All of this is rare good news coming out of a mouth no one wants to hear them from anymore. Don't get me wrong, I hate JT about as much as everyone here, but this investment is actually one of the rare times where there was an adult present in the room to oversee what was happening. Canada badly needs industrial investments and this kind of strategic investment is actually very good to bolster local industrial capital. It's also of strategic interest in the sense that foreign constellations are not going to be reliable in an increasingly isolationist world. Hell, the DoD had to twist SpaceX's arms to get them to keep Starlink operational in Ukraine, that's not exactly a good sign in a market where they dominate with 60%+ of active satellites and 90%+ of the launch market. It's not wasted money either, it's a loan with interests. Canadian taxpayers will not only make money on the government's balance sheet but will also make money off of the jobs and the industries this helps. This is the kind of investment that adds industrial capital, intellectual capital and that provides good jobs to Canadians that are not from the public sector.

@@Not.a.bird.Person A case full of holes. (1) The US didn't "twist SpaceX's arms." It was Musk's idea to aid Ukraine in the first place, _with a costly donation of equipment and services which literally kept Ukraine on the map when it otherwise wouldn't have stood a chance._ Number of other companies in the US or the world which did anything like it: Zero.
The sole occasion Musk demurred was when Ukraine asked for special adjustments to help it counterattack Russia in ways which even the US govt. had not allowed Ukraine to do with its donated weapons. He publicly stated that if the US govt. had instructed him to agree, he would've obeyed. They did not tell him to. And the White House never contradicted him on this point.
      (2) The Liberal govt. under PM Peter Pan hasn't only given loans to Telesat, it has also given it cash gifts, as Brian stated.
      (3) Please specify what guarantees there are that this funding will "make money on the government's balance sheet," rather than going down the drain. In only 34 months the company has lost three-quarters of its value, the shares falling from $41.52 to $10.82 today. Clearly it impresses no one.
Btw, I notice you have no clear idea what a balance sheet is. It's not where loan interest income shows up.
      (4) If this were a moneymaker, as you assert, private money would've been beating down Telesat's door. That's how private capital works: it flows to advantageous, profitable opportunities. But it didn't in this case. That speaks volumes.
      (5) Pray tell, who was this "adult in the room" to whom you refer? First and last name, please.

That is the only goal of this.

Don't get me wrong, I hate the Liberals as much as about 75% of Canadians but it's one of the rare times where this is actually a good move. Canada is in dire need for productive industrial investments and this investment supports a project with Canada's strategic interests at play for once. Foreign made constellations are not going to be a reliable infrastructure in politically turbulent times of isolationism. Hell, Ukraine lost its Starlink connection on a whim and SpaceX had to have its arms twisted by the DoD to give it back. That's not a good sign of things to come with a hyper monopoly controlling 65%+ of satellites in space and controlling 90% of the launch market.

Because relying on foreign made assets in an increasingly isolationist world is dangerous and unreliable, that's why. The DoD had to twist SpaceX's arms into continuing to serve Ukraine with Starlink, all it takes is some random politician invoking some national security concern (as the US often does) and poof, no more internet in rural Canada. That's why this is a good national security project. There's also the misunderstanding here that the government pays for anything... this is a loan with interests, not some handout. Those types of loans exist to prop up local industry and to keep industrial capital, intellectual capital and skilled workers in the country. There is legitimately nothing bad about this.

Even if this was only for 40k homes in Canada (and it's just factually not, this is just blatant misinformation about the use cases of such constellations), the constellation can deliver services across the entire planet. Do you think Starlink only offers services to the US?
It's also not 3B$, it's 2.1B$ from the federal government and the remaining 400M$ portion comes from the provincial government of Quebec because the facility to build those satellites is in Montreal.

The lack of competition, and low populations numbers combined with the large coverage area in our consumer communications is why we have such high prices. If you want to give this contract to another company who will only service Canada, we will be in the same boat again. There will be little doubt that the monthly costs will be far higher than Starlink. Starlink already has a huge user base which keeps costs down. It's a no brainer.

Large coverage area and low population is a weak excuse. Australia pays half what we pay and that’s a massive country with the bulk of its population in a few cities that are nowhere near each other. Finland, Sweden, Norway all pay a fraction what Canadians pay, and they all deal with similar conditions. But you said “the lack of competition” there’s where our problem lies! We have (soon to be) 2 telecom companies that work together to drive prices up, rather than compete to drive prices down. If they ever allow foreign companies to compete in this market, you watch Telus and Roger’s dramatically drop their prices in order to retain costumers. I for one will be with AT&T (or whomever) as fast as I can. Even if Telus does drop their prices to below what AT&T can do. I’ll be gone immediately. For the simple reason that Telus has absolutely ripped me off for 20 years.

I'm not denying the current canadian telecom companies dont have a part in keeping costs high, but comparing European counties and Canada doesnt work. I do agree with you, I welcome any US telecom companies to set up in Canada. I try to support Canadian business but how can one support a business thats been Fking Canadians for years.
